Touchpad

Solved

Hello,
I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop. I mostly work with a mouse, but recently I wanted to use the touchpad and it doesn't work anymore? The blue light indicating the touchpad activation has not been working for a while, but there was always the orange light; when I pressed the touchpad activation button, the light wouldn’t turn blue, but the touchpad still worked. Now the orange light is not visible either! Could someone tell me how to reactivate the function or how to check if it’s just that the touchpad is not working anymore... Thank you for your help

Configuration: Windows Vista / Internet Explorer 8.0

Hello bibapo,

In general, many issues related to the touchpad are resolved once the driver is re-downloaded.
However, a right-click on the touchpad icon (in the taskbar) might be enough to find a solution: it depends on what HP offers you then... and you should have a "Version" button that will give you the name and version of the driver.

The download can be requested if you seek the function, with administrator rights, via Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings (in the blue margin, on the left: that's when you enter the Administrator password) > Hardware tab > Device Manager button > at the bottom of the list, click on the small + of "Mice and other pointing devices" and right-click on Touchpad: do your thing!

Best regards.

Thank you Claude for your great responsiveness. 2 comments, the problem not being resolved
- there is no icon for the pad in the taskbar; so I cannot check the driver version this way - I have never paid attention to the presence of this icon?
- in the control panel, there is no Touchpad; only my HID mouse
Could I have accidentally deleted this feature one day!
Can I still "make up for it"
Thanks a lot for your help
Best regards

Re,
- Have you tried to "expand" the taskbar to the left to reveal its full content?
- Are you sure you have "expanded" in > Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings (in the blue margin on the left: this is when you enter the Administrator password) > Hardware tab > Device Manager button > at the bottom of the list, do you click on the small + of "Mouse and other pointing devices"?
- You can also check, if you have CCleaner, whether there is a reference to the Alps or Synaptics driver in the list of programs or startup programs...
(this is also possible via Control Panel > Programs and Features: it gives you the list of installed software.

If you are stuck, you can still download the appropriate driver for your Touchpad via the official HP download center for your region: you will need to enter the exact reference of your PC, model, etc.

Best regards.

Re-hello Claude,
we're making progress; yes, I had indeed developed the menu and only reached my HID mouse; the Touchpad isn't showing up. However, with CCleaner or the control panel, I do find: "Synaptics pointing device driver"; I suppose that's it, thank you for your advice on getting the pad back up and running.
Looking forward to hearing from you. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Best regards
Paul

Claude,
in the meantime, I went to the HP website as you recommended, and "bingo," by downloading the driver and then its update, MY KEYBOARD IS WORKING AGAIN...Thank you for your help. That's great. I suppose you will mark my question as resolved so as not to unnecessarily bother others. Thanks again.
Best regards. Paul

Hello Claude,
I hope that despite the flag you will read this comment I sent you yesterday by email using the "reply" function. Apparently, you didn't receive it given your very quick response time. Here is the copy/paste of this comment for which I also hope you will have a response.
Thank you, Paul
"I'm using direct email because I don't know if telling you to "close" the subject, by asking you in the same voice used until now, would get my message through..
An icon does appear now in the taskbar but instead of an image, I have a red cross (as indeed shown in Windows help...). However, when I click on this icon then on the "device settings" tab in the properties, I can see the image... where is the "wolf" this time?
Thank you for this new "troubleshooting".
And thank you
Paul"

Re,

I'm un-resoluting this topic while waiting for you to find a way to resolve the issues today related to your Touchpad usage.

I also have, in my taskbar, the icon of my numeric keypad crossed out with a red X.
This means, in the best case (I hope that's yours), that your touchpad is simply disabled.
In that case, you can touch, scratch, poke, or hammer your pad in any way you want: it will have no effect and only your mouse will have a say!

In principle, if you want to (enable/disable) the touchpad, you just need to right-click (maybe) on its icon in the taskbar to bring up the touchpad control panel.

It should look like this:
1. Control panel: select like with my red arrow
2. You get this: this is where you find the different ways to enable/disable...

Try a few things and your touchpad should be operational and the little icon should display without a red X...

See you++

Claude,
hello and thank you for your response. Indeed, the cross appears or disappears depending on whether the pad is enabled or disabled. This point being resolved and well understood now, can you answer the same question about the red cross instead of the image in Windows Help? I rarely go on this application except for these last few days; it seems to me that when I went there last time (more than a year ago maybe?) there was no problem. Thank you for your wise advice.
Best regards, Paul

Re (in response to #9),

A. What kind of help from Windows are you talking about exactly?
1. The help from the "HP Support Center" that you get by clicking on an icon on the Desktop?
2. Or the help you get by clicking Start (Windows logo in the bottom left corner) and then on the Help and Support button of the window that appears?
3. Another help window that you would get via the Control Panel?
4. Direct help on a specific topic, via the F1 key?

B. This (A) being clarified,
1. help regarding what are you talking about?
2. can you take a screenshot illustrating the problem and send it in your response?
(illustration explanations)

Claude, this concerns your point 2 “Windows help and support” opened with start. I took a screenshot but I can't find on this page how to attach a file ... I will send it to you by email using the reply function. I hope it reaches you.
See you soon
Paul

I still haven't received anything.
Instead of using my email or my DM, the rule is to use the forum!

As soon as you've taken your screenshot using the [Prnt Scrn] key, follow this procedure:
https://www.commentcamarche.net/informatique/windows/149-faire-des-captures-d-ecran-avec-windows-10/
Finally, copy the link that interests us (for posting on CCM, it's the last one) and paste it in the message you'll send on this forum.

1. If you enter the word touch in the input window of this Windows Help, the word touch will replace Search in Help, what do you get?

2. I feel like the white Xs on a red background are replacing missing logos, but I could be wrong (I've never encountered this case)
3. What I also don't understand when looking at your screenshot is the white X in a black circle, present in the upper right corner of your Windows Help window...

It's funny: the appearance is exactly the same for you as it is for me, but you get 13 results while I only get 9!!! Here they are:
9 results for touch 1. 1 Enable or disable the touch pointer 2. 2 Sync with a device 3. 3 Boot Windows from a CD or DVD 4. 4 What is the touch pointer? 5. 5 Troubleshoot touch input issues 6. 6 How to tell if touch input is available on the computer 7. 7 Practice using a finger instead of a mouse or stylus 8. 8 Using your finger instead of a mouse or stylus 9. 9 Protecting your mobile PC when on the go

Anyway, the Windows help function seems to be effective on your HP.
The story of the white crosses and the black cross remains a mystery to me.
Maybe you'll see more clearly by clicking on the Options button in the upper right, then on Settings... ... ... but for me, that's the unknown.

Claude,
I sent you a copy of what was happening with the help by typing "touch".
Since I have received another response regarding the sending of the help opening page in the meantime, I am replying to your two questions:
1- Are the crosses red in a white square in what I sent you? (the image I saved is indeed like that)?
2 - I also do not have a white X in a black disc in the upper right corner. Everything appears normal to me, and in that spot, I have a small red rectangular box with a white application close cross...
I hope what you received is not altered!!
A+
Paul

Re,
The crosses I'm talking about only appear in the image from your first link; your second link provides a completely normal help image without those crosses!!!

Addendum to my #19.
Don't worry about the white cross in the black disk: this is a function related to the display of the image delivered by your host: if I click on this white cross, it zooms out the display!!!
However, I can't explain the white Xs on the red square in the first link.
