Hello,
I've had a Nokia C3 since this morning, and I've noticed that it connects automatically to a paid network.
First of all, the Wi-Fi connection is indeed free if I connect to a personal or public network, but free? (School, home, ...)
If not, where does the decrease in my plan come from?
The Facebook news on the homepage updates automatically even though I'm disconnected from all WLAN networks.
I've also noticed a small indicator appearing from time to time next to the battery one (a capital E in a square). Is this related?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 3.6.10

Hello, I also have a C3 on a capped plan, and I am facing the same problem.
But I think we can prevent the Facebook app from updating, by going to options > settings > reduce my data usage; & automatically update the phone's home screen
There you go, I can't tell you if it works or not because I no longer have any plan t_t; but if someone has tried, I would like to know if it works
It seems possible, by calling customer service, to request to block internet (EDGE) for a plan... That's more direct... Let's see ;-)

Hello,
I had the same problem and indeed the Orange advisor I spoke with also confirmed that it is the updates of the Facebook app that occur every half hour FORCED by orange world, even when we are on wifi. Hence the deduction of 50 cents every half hour as a "multimedia session" when we do not have a package including internet.
She told me not to use the Facebook app on the home screen and to go through the Facebook website, which is fine on wifi. And since I uninstalled the app, my plan has indeed stopped decreasing indefinitely...
I'm quite pleased with that so I haven't pushed further for now, but it's true that it's stupid not to be able to enjoy the app which is one of the interests of this phone.
So my next mission will be to call Orange again and see what can be done to stop the updates from going through orange world but instead through wifi... knowing that when I fiddled with the settings to get rid of orange world which I don't want, orange world did indeed get removed but then I couldn't connect to wifi anymore so... We'll see...

I also have the same issue with this famous Nokia C3; having Wi-Fi, I can't go online or access Facebook. At first, I could, but then I realized that Orange is draining my credits. I called customer service after several long waits, but still nothing. I'm planning to get a Samsung with the same app, still with Orange, hoping that it will work.
Otherwise, I found this on the internet, it's in English, but it's not complicated to understand...

TURN OFF AUTOMATIC CONNECTION OF EDGE/GPRS ON NOKIA C3 IF WIFI IS NOT IN USE
I.) Activate Ask first option before connecting to the Internet
Menu>Settings>Connectivity>WLAN>Internet connection>Ask first
II.) Communities Setting (this will stop automatically downloading updates from Facebook/Twitter and will stop connecting to EDGE/GPRS)
Click Options>Settings
While roaming=Minimise my data use
Minimise my data use=On
Confirm before deleting=On
Automatically update my phone Home screen: Never
III.) Chat Setting (this will help not to Sign In your account instantly)
During the account creation or login (below username and password):
Auto Sign In=Off
IV.) Ovi Store Setting
Menu>Settings>Nokia Account
Automatic sign-in=Off
V.) Mail
- Automatically connects/downloads updates using WIFI/EDGE/GPRS once you have created an account on Yahoo! Mail or Gmail.
- You need to delete your email accounts saved in MAIL if you are out of WIFI connection since it will automatically use EDGE/GPRS connection to check new email updates.

THAT works! In fact, you need to go to "social networks" and either you choose "option" --> "disconnect" "option" --> "delete this account" (it's safer)
or you log in to fb or your social network and you click on: "option" --> and you disable everything (Minimize my data use=On
Confirm before deleting=On
Automatically update my phone Home screen: Never)
You also need to delete your account in "email"
it shouldn't connect there anymore! In any case, he has nothing left to synchronize :)

Well, it's just a matter of not going through "communities" in the menu. And if that's already done and you have your app open in the background, then you log into Facebook and disconnect from it. Within the app, you will then have written "login".
So, if you want to go on Facebook, you go through the web > address...

Hello everyone!!
I might have found a solution!
It turns out I have the same phone, recently, with which I no longer have a plan, because of those automatic connections! :@
Anyway, I tested this, but I'm not sure of the result!

I hope it will be beneficial!

I had Orange, so indeed we can block Edge, but then there's no way to send MMS, as MMS goes through Orange World (hence their price) and therefore through Edge. As for blocking Facebook updates, I don't know if that works either, but if it does, the app becomes useless, right?!? It will just be stuck for hours on the same number of messages and the same statuses... So it’s not really useful. Anyway, I’ve given up the fight: I no longer use the app but only the website, on Wi-Fi, it takes 5 seconds longer and that's it...
Wi-Fi is good and free; as for the connection by itself, I have no idea. In fact, I'm asking myself the same question.
Wi-Fi is indeed free when you have your own signal
If you connect to a Wi-Fi signal that is not yours, that's not legal...
So pepsn, when you say "First of all, the Wi-Fi connection is free if I connect to a personal or public network but free? (School, home, ...)", yes you're right...
As for the rest, I don't know.

I have new information.
I called Orange customer service.
The person explained to me that smartphones automatically connect every 20 minutes to update their information, and this connection is charged each time at 50 cents if it's not included in the plan.
So she looked into it but couldn't manage to disable the function. However, she told me that it's usually possible (she knew how to do it for iPhone, Blackberry, ...)
So in the meantime: Remove the SIM card and go to an Orange store, they might know more.
Anyway, I no longer have a phone (the old one is out of order), I've lost several euros of credit and I'm not sure about the effectiveness of going to the store...

For me to access Ovi Nokia, I created an account with a username, then you can download whatever you want!
No, I don't want to download anything; the "OVI chat" application is already on your phone (you can find it in Messaging > Messenger). It's Nokia's software that allows you to access MSN/Yahoo/... to chat. The chat is optimized for this mobile. It's the same as communities (for social networks) or OVI mail (for email accounts).
My problem is that I can access all the applications except for the chat one...

Ah, at least I'm not the only one in this situation ;)
For me, the email was working via wifi at home (on my livebox), updating itself...; whereas in my apartment it started working on the first try (on alicebox); it might have been an issue related to my box :/?
For you, has the chat ever worked or not at all? Because if it has never worked, it's more Nokia that needs to be contacted, not Orange...

Hello,
I know that it's been a while since anyone has posted here, but I myself have a problem with my Nokia C3. I wanted to know if it was normal that I can't connect to Ovi Mail outside of my Wi-Fi connection? When I'm at home everything is perfect but when I want to check my emails outside, the connection via NRJ Mobile Web doesn't work, "please try again later." However, Facebook and the web work really well this way. Does anyone have any idea what I could do to make it work?

No, I don't think it's paid... it's included in my plan (but then, I know few operators that are competent enough on the phone! ^^) I think it just bugs outside of Wi-Fi... but it's pretty annoying, well I just use the internet in those cases. It's the best solution I've found, thanks for your help anyway =)
I'm sorry because I never have enough data to use 2G (^^"); so I can't really help you. I'm talking about payment because a little while ago I couldn't read my emails (not even on Wi-Fi...) and at Orange they assured me that it was normal because I had to pay for the email option (another one who knows nothing, well, a WOMAN since it was a woman with a Polish accent xD).
Anyway, I reset the phone and it worked!

Hello,
I faced the same problem and saw my credit melt away like snow in the sun due to automatic connections. In fact, I reconfigured my phone (see manual). I then contacted 3-4 Orange stores to find a solution. I wanted to connect occasionally. I received all kinds of explanations but nothing solved my problem. The only solution was to get a plan with internet, which I didn't want. And miracle, I went to Orange Auchan Le Mans and there was a very simple solution for people like me who only want to use their connection occasionally: go through Orange World to check their emails and above all, don't forget to log off when you're done! The cost for a connection in my case is 50 cents and it works perfectly. Thank you, Madame ORANGE Auchan LE MANS.

Bonjour, le petit E dans un carré signale qu'il est en ligne, tandis que lorsque le carré n'est plus là, cela signifie qu'il n'est plus en ligne.
I had the same problem (I am with Orange). I called customer service several times and then a technician cut off the data connection of my plan. I can go on the internet via Wi-Fi, make calls, send messages, but the internet connection via Orange World is impossible and therefore not charged to my plan (I have a blocked Orange plan with 40 minutes). Having lost €10 of credit because of these data connections, Orange offered me 80 minutes of credit.

Oh really, that's strange... I get this message when I "rip" and try to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot that apparently isn't mine, even though it's open access.
Did you enter your box's Wi-Fi code correctly the first time? Are you trying to connect to the right WLAN?!?
Did you enter your box's Wi-Fi code correctly the first time? Are you trying to connect to the right WLAN?!?
I have a question about Wi-Fi. After connecting to my home WLAN network, how do I access the internet via this Wi-Fi for free? When I open my browser, the Hedge (paid) network starts, even though I'm connected to a Wi-Fi. Thank you.
Well, I do the same as you, I connect to my WLAN, once it says the connection is successful, I exit and then I go on the web, but before opening a page it always asks me to select an internet connection: either the WLAN (so free Wi-Fi) or G orange world (so paid edge). So apparently it's this step that you don't have which I don't understand, maybe there's a problem in your connectivity settings, right?
Hi Pierre, I have exactly the same problem as you, but in my settings, I have set it to always ask for the connection mode, yet it never asks me; it always connects through Bouygues' web, so the E for Edge appears, which is chargeable!
If you found the solution to your problem, please help me, thanks!

But for some time now, when I connect to a network, it works, I disconnect, and then when I want to reconnect, it says network not available? Could you explain this to me? :(
And now it asks you every time if you want to use wifi or gprs to connect.
