Messenger closes by itself

Hello,

Messenger opens on startup, but closes immediately... I've tried everything (that I know how to do...) including reinstalling it... But nothing works.
Thanks to anyone who has the solution!!!

Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 3.6.10

      Thank you for your help... But I've made about a dozen attempts at a "deep clean".... then reinstallation without managing to get back to normal. Messenger keeps shutting me out every time just a few short seconds after connecting.
      I'm losing hope!
      Is there a more radical, if not brutal, solution to get out of this?
