So, if I understand correctly...

4 MB = 4,194,304 bytes?

I did try to calculate it, but wow, I'm really not sure!

No.

4 MB = 4 Megabytes 4,000,000 bytes.
Just like 4 Megajoules = 4,000,000 Joules
or 4 Megatons = 4,000,000 tons

4 Megabytes equal:
4 * 1024 * 1024 = 4194304 Bytes
and not
4 * 1000 * 1000

it's not logic, it's computing.

again, it depends on who is speaking:
computer systems count 1 kilo = 1024
while hard drive manufacturers count 1 kilo = 1000
simply to make hard drives appear larger on paper than they actually are once formatted.

this is called marketing (in French, misleading advertising).

Sebsauvage!
We understand that it's the office of so-and-so that defines the values of kilo, mega, and other multiples.
But since we are on a computer forum and everyone seeking help uses an OS that makes the mistake, don't you think it would be smarter to use the 1024 system even if it's wrong???
Because what will happen when someone asks for help filling an 800 MB CD with 8 KB files???
Are you going to tell them they can put 100,000 files? When in reality, they can only fit 2,400 more!!!
I think people who come here don’t care about having a lesson on the theory of mega and kilo. They just want answers to their problems.
I choose to help by perpetuating a widely spread error rather than giving correct answers that are simply UNUSABLE in practice.

Hello,
I don’t see at all how the right values are practically unusable.
Continuing to perpetuate an erroneous value will never solve the problem.
A 700 MB CD will contain at most 700,000,000 Bytes of useful data, no need to beat around the bush.

Salut

You turn on your brain, open your eyes and read the best answers. You will find out how much 303.6 Mo is in Mb or MB...

I believe we should stop helping people with this kind of question because, in my opinion, it's not doing them a favor to give them answers that are a few posts up.
