Issue with NXT Mindstorm firmware

Hello,

I hesitated a lot about which forum I should post my problem in, but ultimately, since it's related to the installation of firmware and electronic equipment, I'm posting it here even though it's not related to PC hardware.

So, since yesterday, I have a smart brick NXT Mindstorm that is not working anymore; it only emits a sort of electronic noise. This started when I wanted to install a new version of the firmware on it (1.29), the original version being installed in the brick (version 1.01).
I downloaded the firmware from the support site for the NXT Mindstorm, then followed the instructions carefully to install it in the correct directory, and then in the "NXT update" window, I started the download. The detection step of the brick went correctly (the brick was connected via USB), then the "Preparing NXT" step began.
From that moment, the NXT brick started making a strange noise, and the sensors connected to it lit up and stayed that way for nearly three hours, at which point I began to seriously worry because nothing had progressed and the brick was still emitting the same noise.
I then decided to cancel, and I unplugged the NXT brick, but the noise persisted. I removed the batteries, but again, it didn’t work because once reinserted, the noise returned, with nothing functioning, the screen remaining blank.

So that's my problem; if anyone knows a solution, I thank them in advance for sharing it because this malfunction is quite annoying and especially worrying given the price of such a system.

With that, have a nice day.

Unfortunately, I have the same problem and even after resetting nothing happens.
In fact, since I attempted this update for the first time, as the module is constantly turned off, the USB connection does not work, the module is no longer recognized via USB. So it's impossible to try the update again.
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hello...
Or good evening to all, I have the solution to the problem.
It’s simple... Under Windows 10, you need to open the Device Manager. Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Device Manager -> COM and LPT ports -> Bossa program port (COM...(for me, it's COM6)) -> right-click -> update the device -> Choose the driver already present on my computer -> Choose a driver from a list -> Lego Mindstorms NXT -> confirm -> go to NXT software -> Tools -> Update NXT firmware -> Download and there you go!!
    PS: keep your old programs handy, because the NXT reverts to factory version;}

Hi (I know it's been almost a year since the update, but it might be useful)
I've found the solution that worked for me (the reset button while removing the batteries didn't work and the Mindstorm software couldn't find the NXT). In the device manager, I had "bossa program port" instead of the NXT, in the driver tab, you need to uninstall the driver (at the bottom) then keep the NXT connected and press the reset button (I pressed it for 10 seconds), wait, and then the computer tells you it has installed an NXT driver (I don't remember the rest of the name)... then in the NXT Mindstorm software, you can update the firmware again
there you go :) I hope this helps someone

    Hello,

to solve your problem you need to press the reset button located at the back of the brick for 5 seconds then re-download the latest firmware via the software. Make sure to hold it for 5 seconds. I had to do it twice but after that it works.

I have the same problem. First of all, there is no reset button at the back except under the batteries, but to press it you have to remove them... I tried 5, 10, 15 seconds, nothing...

And indeed the brick is no longer detected by the computer...
    What should I do?

I found a solution that works:

-press and hold the "reset" button located at the back of the brick, under the batteries for 5 seconds (be careful to press for at least 5 seconds (I pressed for 7 seconds))

    -put the batteries back

-open the "lego mindstorms NXT 2.0" icon on the desktop

-click on "tools" then on "update NXT firmware"

-connect the brick to the computer with the USB cable

-click on "download" (on the "update NXT firmware" window)

-wait for the download to finish and disconnect the USB cable

    there you go

Thank you very much, it's the same for the NXT 2.0 Mindstorms

    - the brick makes a sort of "toc"
(no need to remove the batteries)
    - plug in the brick
    - press reset for 5 seconds or more
    - go to "tools" then to "update NXT firmware"
    - click on "download"

Attention, the reset button is not the one located under the batteries but in one of the holes in the top left row when you look at the brick from behind (exactly the one on the far left; press down firmly for 5 seconds, then turn on the brick with the orange button (no display is normal), then listen carefully if the small sound is present, connect the brick to the PC and then update the microprogram.

    Hello,
I resolved the issue on Win7 by updating the brick driver.
Control Panel ---- System --- Device Manager --- LEGO device. (WARNING: the brick must beep ...)
Then: LEGO Mindstorm ---- driver tab --- update driver --- Browse my computer - select Mindstorm update driver instead of Samba.

Normally, it finds the brick and it is possible to update via the Mindstorm software.

      Hello

On Windows 10, you need to start the NXT (personally, I didn't have anything displayed on the NXT) and then go to: Control Panel --> Device Manager --> bossa program port (COM...) --> left click then update the driver --> Browse my computer --> Choose from a list of device drivers on my computer --> select Lego Mindstorm NXT and then update the firmware without touching the buttons on the NXT, otherwise it will revert the bossa driver.

Thanks to everyone who advises not to get discouraged because I almost did!
I am on Debian Jessie and I was despairing of ever getting this damned brick to work with LEJOS (java). Until it completely crashed while trying to flash with the freedroidz Eclipse plugin. BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, ...
Then I tried again to flash with the LejosNXT Eclipse plugin and miracle, it finally worked. No more Beep Beep and Lejos 0.9.0 on my brick!

A big THANK YOU to NeilSC.

Please note that the inappropriate driver must be completely REMOVED.

On my side, to ensure that the correct USB driver is chosen, I had to disconnect the computer from the internet; otherwise, it always installs the "Bossa" driver during the update.

Look at my thing and you shouldn't update the driver.
