motherboard changed: data deleted????

Question

Hello,I took my laptop to HP for repair, and they told me they would change the motherboard, but my issue is: will I lose all my data???Will I have the possibility to restore it later???In fact, I called HP's repair service to ask them the question, and they told me that there could possibly be data loss and that I would have to restore it myself once the motherboard has been changed. I didn't really understand their explanation.Also knowing that I don’t know how to restore, I'm not very good with computers.Please help meThank you

Personally, I'm not very confident in the repair services of major brands.
In theory, changing the motherboard doesn't result in data loss on your hard drive. These are distinct elements.

But in practice, it's better to take precautions and back up the drive before putting the PC in the hands of more or less competent people.

No, you should back up your data before changing your motherboard.
As Zpoupette told you, your data should normally not be affected,
but it's true that you never know what can happen in the PC or in the technician's mind.

The best option would be to have a small USB external hard drive like one of these:

and to copy all your data there, only your emails, spreadsheets, photos, movies, music, etc.
but not the software, it's useless, they'll have to be reinstalled just in case...
You simply drag your folders to be backed up into the icon of the external drive in the explorer.

In any case, regular backups on a drive like this are strongly recommended and even essential if your PC contains important documents for you.

Generally, repair technicians format for nothing, so it's also a risk to take.

And if they change the motherboard, there's a good chance you'll have to reinstall your operating system (I think this last possibility applies if they change the type of motherboard.)

In fact, the problem was that when I was about to back everything up on my mini hard drive, the PC shut down because it had no battery left; it wouldn't turn back on because it wasn't charging anymore.

So basically, I didn't have time to back up my data, and the PC is currently being repaired at HP.

So my question was this: will I still have a chance to recover my data after the motherboard is replaced?

I did ask the repair service, and they said they could leave a note indicating that they shouldn't touch the data and that I should restore it myself.

I don't see how that would be possible?

Either the data is deleted during the intervention and it is permanently lost since you have no backup, or it is not deleted and you will not need to 'restore' it.
You can simply make a new backup, but that won't change anything on your disk.
You should only try to restore files from your interrupted backup if your data has been deleted from the hard drive; otherwise, you risk overwriting a valid file with an incomplete backup.

Even if you can no longer access Windows because the installed components are no longer compatible with the motherboard, you can use a Linux live CD to recover the data.
If the PC has been formatted, I think you can recover some of the data with recovery software (maybe even all of it if you're lucky).

Hello,

otherwise there is possibly a solution if they have formatted the hard drive (erased your data).

there are specialized programs in this field, some free, others paid.
I have already used GetData (a paid one, about 50 euros), easy to use, after formatting I managed to recover: photo*, document*, music* and film*.

* some files are corrupted, there are missing fragments. e.g.: cut photos, music with micro-cuts, ...)

you never recover 100% of all files.

If it no longer charges, it might be a power supply issue; on a laptop, it costs about 50 euros.

In my personal opinion, I would say that your power supply being eaten away by your nothing caused a short circuit and burnt out the power components, which are integrated into the motherboard. So it needs to be replaced.

The seller may not necessarily know, but maybe a short circuit damaged the motherboard.
You should have asked a seller when you bought your charger.

In the end, the only way to be sure is to wait for a professional opinion.
