Hello everyone,
Since I installed Opera, I can't close it normally, neither by the Quit command nor by the shortcut. It's like I'm not doing anything at all!
I'm forced to use the Force Quit function to exit, which is quite annoying.
I did a little permissions repair, just in case, but it didn't change anything.
Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks in advance! :-)
Information about the version of Opera:
Version 10.10 - Revision 6795
Platform Mac OS X System 10.5.8
Java Runtime Library installed
Browser identification
Opera/9.80 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X; U; fr) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.10

Hello Dede74000,
No, when I try to shut down the Mac, it doesn’t want to close either and I have to go through “Force Quit” because otherwise the Mac doesn’t shut down as well!
I checked in the Preferences and found nothing unusual: anyway, at first it used to shut down without any hesitation and now it doesn’t want to listen anymore, without me having changed anything! :-(
And it doesn’t show any signs at all, no reaction, as if I’m doing absolutely nothing: not frozen, but completely ignoring my efforts to shut it down!
You must be right: it must be enjoying my company ;-)
Thank you for at least trying to help me.
Maybe someone will come by one day with the solution?
Have a nice day! :-)

Hello,
Uninstall Opera and reinstall it cleanly.
To remove everything related to it, use a small app like "AppTrap" or AppCleaner or another one that you can download from here: https://www.logicielmac.com/
Open this utility after installing it and drag the Opera icon into the window.

Wishing all of you a happy and fulfilling "Mac year".

Hello Dede74000
First of all, thank you for your reply: I have just discovered some interesting apps thanks to you!
Uninstalling and reinstalling Opera (without those tools I didn't know about), I had thought about it, but that means I will lose all my saved passwords, especially. I found out how to export bookmarks, but not the rest.
Could you help me with that too? :-)

Hello @nnie,
Open Opera/menu File/Import-Export and put all that on the desktop, then after installing the new version, the reverse maneuver: import and provide the path to the folder you opened and named on the desktop (in Finder/File/new folder) where you put everything you wanted from Opera.
Don't you use Safari or Firefox? Just in case, you can import all your bookmarks from either one into Opera during the installation, this will be offered to you.

Hello Dede74000,
Thank you for the details, but what I'm missing is how to save (or export, it’s the same) my saved passwords in Opera. I have a lot, and if I could avoid having to enter them all again...
I checked in Preferences and the Password Manager, but I couldn't find it. :-(
Well, if there's no other solution, too bad I’ll have to go through that, but if there’s a way... I would really love to know!

Small correction: I found where the password file was located, and I just had to copy it, then put it back after reinstallation and everything works wonderfully!
Dede, it was indeed a bad installation of Opera.
For those interested, here’s where to retrieve the files you want to keep:
/Users/username/Library/Preferences/Opera Preferences
passwords => wand.dat
bookmarks => bookmarks.adr
Speed Dial => speedial.ini
Anyway, everything is in the same folder and can be backed up, including history and saved sessions!
For my part, it allowed me to lose nothing when reinstalling everything.
And now, Opera closes normally, phew!
Note that I used AppCleaner, as advised by Dede74000, thanks again!

I was just the “trigger” you did the rest, well done and if everything works well, all the better.

Hello @nnie,
I give up! Since I only use Opera for testing, I have no issues with it closing, and I really don't see why it refuses to close for you!! It must be quite happy in your company and wants to keep working ;-)
However, when you shut down the Mac, it closes automatically, so why do you want to close it? To leave the open page, just hit "Command+W" and you can work on something else.
Have you checked in Opera's preferences if you accidentally have a box checked in the "Advanced" tab or any of the sections?
And in your system preferences "Sharing"? Just in case you have multiple accounts on your Mac!!
I'm not much help, and I have no lifeline for this dive into the water :-((
Sorry.

Re,
So, neither through the Opera menu/Quit Opera nor with the shortcut Command+Q does it want to close!!
Have you tried running ToolsX or Onyx to optimize the Mac? Repairing permissions multiple times if necessary?
At worst, in case your system has a problem, you can always try reinstalling it, with the "Archive and Install" option which won't touch your data but will reinstall a clean system, renaming the old one "previous system" which you can then throw in the trash after a normal usage period of the new one, or from which you can "fish" some small things.
The basics of installation: https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/15198-installer-ou-reinstaller-mac-os-x-10-5-alias-leopard
One more thing, do you really care about Opera?

I've already tried permission repairs, but not several times in a row. I can easily do that again.
Onyx is a utility that I admit I don’t know much about and I use it sparingly.
As for ToolX, I don’t know it at all.
I went to read the post you mentioned and I’m still quite worried about attempting the Archive and Install procedure, especially regarding BootCamp and Parallels, which I fear I will have to reinstall along with everything on them, so a lot of work ahead... :-(
As for whether I really care about Opera, ha, ha! That's a good question!
Because while I do appreciate this browser for its various features, it is equally true that I appreciate Firefox, which I ended up abandoning in favor of Safari due to the increase in crashes. And I abandoned Safari because it has become slower and slower over time.
To their credit, I always browse with several windows open, each with quite a few tabs. And in the end, they don’t seem to appreciate that, neither of them!
In summary, I'm on my third problematic browser, and it would make sense to conclude that they're not the issue but that something else is wrong somewhere, right?
Since I have no idea what it could be and I don’t want to, as mentioned earlier, embark on major maneuvers, I think I'm going to stick with my resilient Opera because compared to the troubles I have with the other two, this one is still the least problematic!
Thank you for your patience, Dede74000!

Hi,
The slowness of Safari is due to all the data it stores in its cache, it's incredible, it can amount to several hundreds of MB or even more. Out of curiosity, check this out: user/library/Caches/com.apple.safari/Webpage Previews and read the information in this file, you'll understand! All the pages you visit are stored there and, even if you regularly clear the cache, it doesn’t empty completely! Moreover, it stores them in duplicate, in .jpg and .png format!!
This storage, without the user's knowledge, can prove to be dangerous because, supposing you wanted to hide your visits to certain dubious websites, and you wanted to prevent prying eyes from seeing it, believing you've deleted the link and thinking you're safe from indiscreet looks, well, you're out of luck as they say vulgarly!!
I believe Flash has a hidden folder too, which keeps links to all visited pages!!
To prevent Safari from indexing the pages of visited sites and thus prevent its slowdowns, everything is explained here:
http://www.zuneo.net/2009/08/desactiver-les-apercus-des-pages-dans.html
Personally, I regularly trash the contents of the aforementioned file and Safari runs much better.
Regarding the issue of reinstalling the system using the "archive and install" method, I don't think it would interfere with your Bootcamp installation or other Parallels Desktop, but this should be confirmed.
There you go dear @nnie, you can kick your Opera back on stage if it's giving you problems by making you sing "don't leave me" :-)) and return to Safari, knowing the cause of the slowdowns and other crashes!
Have a good afternoon.

After visiting the indicated site, I will follow these recommendations and test them in the long term.
I'm not used to using the Terminal, but it will be the occasion.
And then eventually, I might end up getting along well with one of my browsers ;-)
I will still leave the post unresolved, just in case someone knows the reason for Opera's caprice.
Thanks again to you, dear Dede74000! :-)

Dear @nnie, dear dede74000
First of all, I wanted to testify to the very high quality of Opera 10.10 for intensive use. Moreover, it can also be very nicely and subtly customized, which is a bonus. I admit that my heart regularly swings between Opera and Firefox depending on my OS, and that on Mac I more frequently use Opera. However, it is not without its flaws. For example, it is not the champion of Flash display. I don't know who is to blame, Adobe Flash or Opera, but I will refrain from criticizing Adobe like a fanatic pro brand against brand, as I have enjoyed many good moments with creations made with Flash and Shockwave, and especially as a long-time professional user of a Mac, Photoshop and Illustrator have been and continue to be the top-notch tools for working on images and layouts.
That said, it is true that sometimes, when we leave Opera open for a certain time without using it, comfortably settled on our beautiful Mac screens, it tends to resist closing.
In my humble opinion, it works for me every time, you then need to close it via the Dock icon: right click and then quit.
There you go
TCHO TCHO as we say to say goodbye in my current country.

Hello dear HelloMate,
No need to worry about spelling mistakes: if you were competing for the prize for the most mistakes, you would surely have finished in the last places! ;-)
As for the solution you are using, I had never thought of that!
I will hurry to test it, which will take a bit of time, because indeed the phenomenon occurs when Opera has been open for a long time.
I will certainly come back here to report the results.
Thank you!

HelloHelloMate,
Unfortunately, alas, it doesn't work for me: when I tried to close Opera from the Dock, the windows did indeed close, but then the application froze and I had to force it to quit as usual. :-(
Too bad. This time, I believe everything has been tried...
Have a nice day. :-)

Dear @nnie
Too bad, it was too simple a solution even though it works for me.
It seems that we are not the only ones encountering this issue when leaving Opera. I found on the official Opera forum, My Opera, in English, that it is a known bug in Opera on Mac related to the Java applet.
Here is the link: https://forums.opera.com
We’ve really made progress.
It seems that this very annoying problem, which actually happens to me rarely, will have its solution in the next major Opera update. In the meantime, well, I would have enjoyed reading your messages. And as we say in my old country, Take care @nnie.

Dear HelloMate,
Thank you for that last piece of information: at least I feel less alone! ;-)
I will wait for the next update.
Otherwise, two little off-topic questions:
- What does IMO mean, which I found in the post in English?
- And what is your home country???
(if it's not too personal, of course).
Thanks again for your help! :-)

Dear @nnie
Very happy to read your message
I wasn't expecting a word from you, which is why I'm only writing to you today.
So first of all, the subject of my remarks.
The Opera Desktop Team announced recently that Opera 10.5 (the next major version of the browser) for Windows is now in Beta. This means that the team is working quickly and will deliver a beautiful, brand new Opera in no time
The progress for Mac and Linux OS is slightly behind, but the Opera Desktop Team is kind enough to reassure users of these systems by letting them know in a message at this address:
https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/
that Opera 10.5 for Mac and Linux is in Alpha.
For now, this version does not support Java, but ultimately the Java display will be, according to the team, the fastest of all browsers, catching up with Google Chrome 4's performance and far surpassing that of Safari.
Let’s hope that the Opera Desktop Team will consider improving the Java shutdown that sometimes prevents Opera from closing.
There you go.
IMO
Yes, it is of course the famous Irish Medical Organisation, the main organization of Irish doctors.
I myself am quite surprised that the community using Opera is so close to this organization, but what can you do, the world is sometimes surprising.
Yes, yes, yes... Although in this context, perhaps the acronym for In My Opinion would be more appropriate. We'll see. Well, I think that’s all for now.
I had the immense pleasure of living for a few years in the wonderful cosmopolitan city of London.
I am now in the no less beautiful region of Lake Geneva, a lake currently surrounded by snowy mountains. Divine.
That's a glimpse of my exciting life.
I must admit dear @nnie, I am intrigued by your 10-hour time difference. Fascinating. I have never lived so far from my Paris.
If the reference time is Paris, it would mean you are located in Japan, Australia, or Hawaii, for example. Three remarkable destinations.
I hope for you that you chose the place where you currently reside and that you feel good there.
Looking forward to hearing from you again
Take care @nnie

Dear HelloMate,
Thank you for this detailed response: let's keep our fingers crossed for the upcoming release of the latest version of Opera!
I admit I didn't know about the IMO, as famous as it may be... :-( and thanks to you, I'll go to bed a little less ignorant tonight! :-)
As for my 10-hour time difference, well, you could have simply checked my profile to see that I live in New Caledonia. So, not very far from Australia, but with much less space!
Here, space is the Pacific Ocean...
Enjoy your snowy peaks. :-)
Best regards,
