On the motherboard is the ROM. A read-only memory that cannot be changed. For quite some time now, we've also been using CMOS: a volatile memory that contains basic and essential information.
If the CMOS is no longer powered, it empties. The battery allows it to be powered when the PC is off.
If you want to get rid of your password… are you talking about the BIOS password? Or the Vista password?

Cool, I didn't know that at my school they take apart TVs and computers. Yesterday I saw one inside the computer without knowing what it was for.
