Good evening,
while researching on the Forum, I found the following solution to resolve my issue with the Error accessing the System Registry in Windows: you need to boot into DOS and then execute scanreg /fix.
Dummy question: how do I boot into DOS? Because I tried under Windows by going to Start/Run and typing this command, but it didn't work!!!!
Thank you for your quick and kind responses.

Good evening everyone,
There are several ways to start in DOS, some more DOS than others (you didn't specify your OS; I’ll assume you have Win98); in order from least DOS to most DOS:
-1- Start/Programs/MS-DOS Prompt (this is not real DOS but DOS under Windows); type exit to return to Windows
-2- Start/Run/type command and then click OK (this is not real DOS but DOS under Windows)
-3- Start/Shutdown/Restart in MS-DOS mode (this is not real DOS but DOS under Windows); type exit to return to Windows
-4- Restart the computer; press F8 when the manufacturer's logo is displayed before the Windows Startup message appears; from the menu, choose MS-DOS Command Line; Alt-Ctrl-Del to restart in Windows
-5- Restart the computer with a boot disk and choose the DOS option
-6- Restart with a DOS disk... I did say DOS version 6.2 for example...
Options 4, 5, & 6 are booting into DOS... the first three are different and should be used in specific cases.
In your case, choose method 4 and type
SCANREG /FIX to repair your registry.
