Originally, DivX was created by a company that charged for it (still does!), if memory serves, in the United States. Then, when Linux started to emerge with open source, there was an early version of a competitor to DivX, but the name was too similar to DivX, making it illegal, and it eventually became Xvid (which is DivX reversed). Xvid is nearly identical to DivX as it uses the same principle: compressing videos. But Xvid is free.

Furthermore, the algorithm used on Xvid is different, and you gain a few megabytes per gigabyte, which is not negligible.

Now, is one better than the other? It's a matter of taste, but for my part, I prefer Xvid because I find the result much more successful than DivX, even the generic one and encoded in two passes… and above all, even though many players can read almost all DivX, with the different versions, some are incompatible, whereas Xvid doesn't fuss, and thus everything is compatible regardless of the version.

So there you go, in essence, it's the same thing, but one is free, the other is paid //wink

Ha, a comment that allows for an informed choice between two formats that seem identical but are not quite: XVID IS MORE ADVANCED (better quality) AND ABOVE ALL 100% compatible with DivX, but the reverse is not true! This is very important when building a film library!

You also have a trial version of "6 months" for DIVX 5.2.1...
Well encoded... a DIVX or a XVID is undetectable to the naked eye...
But you're going to have DIVX6 coming out soon, which might change everything... better quality, and especially the possibility of menus, chapters... like a DVD.

    hi,
in my opinion, xvid is of much better quality than classic divx.
but if we compare divx pro 5.2.1 to xvid, well, it's the divx pro that wins because you can customize it to your liking and get good results.
conclusion: - XVID superior to DIVX
    - DIVX PRO 5.2.1 superior to XVID

    Thank you, Azzedine.
If I understood correctly, since DivX Pro 5.2.1 is paid and my home player works with a movie encoded in Xvid (thanks to the DivX Video Duplicator Pro 3 log), I should definitely use Xvid codecs.

But can you tell me if it's worth investing in DivX Pro 5.2.1 codecs?

    Thank you for your answers.
    See you!

Thank you for all these explanations.

I will choose Xvid while waiting for divx 6
Because after several attempts and seeing the discussions in a forum, divx codecs seem to cause problems with divx video duplicator.

      Hello.

I have it too and I don't have any particular problems.
However, I can't tell you if this version is better or worse than the others because I'm not knowledgeable enough.
I hope someone will reply to you.

We must be at XviD 1.1 beta 2 it seems
    But 1.03 is not bad...

    Hi everyone
With Divx Video Duplicator and Xvid, no problem, with DivX 5.1.1 neither, but with DivX 5.2.1 that's where the big problem lies. I'm getting files that are 1/10th of the expected size with choppy images and ok sound. The legal software results from the update from 5.1 to 5.2 with all the correct codes. There might be something I'm missing in the settings. I've followed the instructions in the apparently very comprehensive pdf manual. If anyone among you, especially Azzedine, knows a workaround, I would be happy to hear it. Unless DV Duplicator doesn't recognize, or misrecognizes, version 5.2.1
Thanks for your insights. See you later.

    Hello,
I have a problem when I open a video file; an error report appears caused by Xvid.dll
It crashes my Windows Explorer every time, even my PC.
It even happens sometimes when I open a folder containing video files.

My default player is WMP, but I also use VLC for videos, especially.

    Thank you!
