How to open an Unknown folder

Hello,
I would like your help in opening a file Unknown: that I cannot open - and thank you in advance -
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 8.0

    Hello,

    ALL files can be UNKNOWN files...

    Under Windows, the file format and the software used to open it is determined by the extension.

    Example: photo.jpg => the file is in JPG format, Windows looks in the registry to find out which software is used to open that file format.

    THEN: if double-clicking on a file shows it as UNKNOWN, it means Windows has no information about that format...

    AND: to know which software should be used, you need to know the file extension (e.g.: .jpg, .png, etc...)

    Without knowing the extension, it is also "UNKNOWN" to us....

      Hello PyNux, I checked the webpage about this kind of file: it's an extension: 3gp pps pdf rar flv dll, that's all I could gather: and I still haven't been able to open the folder: and thank you for replying to me even though the file won't be opened: the main thing for me is that someone could respond to me and give me explanations. Maybe with this information you can tell me how to proceed to open it.

        "3gp pps pdf rar flv dll" > that makes 6 extensions...

        pdf => file readable by Acrobat Reader...

        rar => compressed archive (several files combined into one), can be opened with WinRar...

        dll => system library (a set of functions used by several programs)...

        I don't know the other 3... (FLV must be a video or animation format, pps must be a PowerPoint file but I'm not sure...)

    Where and how did you find this file? What is it supposed to be (An archive, a 3D model, text...) ?

    I'm asking you this to narrow down the search.

        Hello PinBall92 my friend, I received your instructions to open the slides that were sent to me from France. I installed the PowerPoint viewer as indicated in your message, but it didn’t work; the slideshow files wouldn’t open, and thank you for replying to me. If another solution exists, I would like to know it: I received slides that need to be opened by a DAT file. I didn't understand anything; yet, the PowerPoint slides open easily, but I have this ongoing problem with Unknown and DAT files. Thank you my friend.
