Windows 98 protection error related to NDIS.VXD

Here is my problem,
I have just set up a second machine composed of an Asus P4B533-E motherboard and a P4 2.26 GHz processor.
From the first launch of Windows 98, the following error message appeared even before Windows 98 was launched: "DURING THE INITIALIZATION OF THE NDIS DEVICE: WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR. YOU MUST RESTART YOUR COMPUTER."
The way to launch Windows normally is then to perform a "step-by-step confirmation" and not to load the "ndis.vxd" file. In fact, this file seems to be related to the presence of an RJ45 port on the motherboard, which causes Windows to recognize a network card. It seems to me that this file is linked to the presence of the network, so when I remove this network card from the system, the error message no longer appears.
However, this is not a solution to the problem because I want to set up a network connection with my old computer on which Windows 98 worked very well. Even connecting an ADSL modem seems impossible.
I have already tried swapping the hard drive and I have checked that the ndis.vxd file is indeed present on my computer. Therefore, I am turning to you in the hope of finding a solution to my problem or at least some avenues for research since the problem does not seem to come from the file itself.
Thank you in advance for your advice.

It's shady. I assume you didn't do a fresh install after formatting with a Win98 CD. I suppose if that's the case, you took a hard drive already used in another environment. The Asus P4B doesn't have an Ethernet chip, so you might have put the same card in, or maybe another one; what brand, what chipset, what version?
What services and protocols have you installed: sharing, TCP/IP, NetBIOS, IPX?
I suggest booting in safe mode and removing everything related to the network, including the network card driver, protocols, and services, and then rebooting. Plug and play will then ask to insert the Ethernet card drivers and then you will install as few services as possible.
That should work. If not, call back, but with details.

try uninstalling the remote access card, reboot and the reinstallation will happen automatically

    Hello,
I have exactly the same issue, no more, no less. With P4 2.4G
by uninstalling the remote access card, the problem comes back.
On the other hand, I found in my archives an ndis.vxd from an earlier version, I copied it into the relevant folder and it no longer crashes at startup, but I haven't tested everything yet, I've only stopped at startup for now.
Apparently, this file is not compatible with new Intel technologies.
Be careful, if you reinstall a network device, this file will be overwritten since it will update it.
It would be necessary to do a "SPmaison" in the autoexec by copying this file before the startup of Windows.
Moreover, I tested it with W2000, and it doesn’t cause any problems.
I don’t know if the ndis.vxd file from W2000 (if it exists) is compatible with W98 and later versions, to be tested.
This is what I have observed and I don’t have any better ideas for now, we need to find a new version of this file.
    See you later.

Same problem, P4B533 card - P4 2.4b, Windows 98 version 4.10. 1998, installing Ndis.vxd from w2000 solves the boot issue. But it creates 2 files (0 bytes 0 folder) in the Windows directory on each new boot. It's quite a mess to deal with. No solution in sight and YOU!!!

    Hello,

Hehe, coincidentally, I have exactly the same problem on Win 98!
It’s not that we don’t know how to use drivers or anything!
    We’re past that stage!

It's just that I bought an Asus P4S533 motherboard + 2.4 GHz and have the same error as the previous posts!
I tested everything on other PCs!
=> It's not the CD, the memory, the processor, the hard drive, etc...

So I thought it might be the motherboard, so I got a DFI P4x400 motherboard and I have the same problem!
I tried Win2000 and miracle, it works with my network card!
So there you go! I don’t really understand the problem except that this ndis.vxd file is getting on my nerves!
If anyone happens to solve the problem on Win98, please feel free to send me an email! Thanks a lot!
    Best regards!

This problem is related to the motherboard or the graphics card that does not support the first version of WIN98
Most motherboards only accept starting from win98 SE

there you go, that's what happened to me
    good luck
