Hello, following a problem on a secondary PC, I decided to switch to Linux. Strangely, my PC is massively slowing down since then. Before, the OS was Windows XP and everything was fine. My specs in broad strokes are: 524 MB of RAM and a 25 GB hard drive. I read on the web that it was enough to browse quietly; is there a problem or is it normal? Thanks in advance 
Configuration: Windows Vista Firefox 3.0.11

    You open the system monitor
    System/Administration/System Monitor
    then Processes
    and see which program uses the most memory and CPU time.

    Hello, so to disable compiz-fusion, is it like this: right-click on the desktop, change the desktop background and check "none"?

    No, that’s not normal, 512 MB of RAM should be enough, even for 3D (Compiz Fusion).

    gnome-system-monitor 10.8 MB, I’m putting that one, it’s the only one that was “in progress”

    It's not much on my end; Firefox takes 67 MB and my PC doesn't lag.
    Have you tried disabling Compiz Fusion?
    Otherwise, it surely comes from your Internet connection.

    no I have not installed a graphics card driver, and I have no idea which driver I should look for, how can I know the model of my card to find the right one? thanks in advance

    Well then you have 3D enabled, that's good

    Install a 3D game like Chromium b.s.u
    it's in the repositories, you can install it with synaptic

    and tell us if it's smooth
