If it's a trustworthy site, no problem.

When I rent a car or book a hotel, they often ask me for it.

If I don't show up, they charge the card. That way, they're covered.

It's almost the same principle as the payment pre-authorization when you rent a car (for the deposit).

If you return the car with a problem, they charge the credit card, they already have the authorization to charge.

It has been practiced for years anyway... even before the internet. Back then, we would have guests sign a blank invoice upon arrival at the hotel! It's just to ensure that you will indeed come or that if you don't come, you cancel the reservation in time.

I don't think it's really legal to ask for that; in any case, you can refuse to provide it. However, they can (and probably will) require a deposit by another means (by check, for example) with the condition of waiting to receive it before actually making the reservation; or even an advance payment.

No, they don’t have the right to ask you for your crypto; normally, they only ask for your card number and the validity for guarantee. I know because I work at the reservation in a hotel in Bora in French Polynesia.

I confirm what Vai said, a hotel or any other organization is not allowed to ask you for the security code of a card.
The request for a credit card number and expiration date has been around for a long time and serves as a guarantee for hoteliers for room reservations (like renting a vehicle).
As mentioned previously, hoteliers protect themselves in case of a "no-show" by asking for this type of information.
You are not obliged to provide it; however, a prepayment for your stay may be requested as a confirmation.

For your information, the cryptogram is only 3 digits that (basically) are there to validate that your card is a real card and not a card generated on a computer or a fake card.

Basically, it doesn't change anything to give them or not; it's just that certain payment machines require this to verify the authenticity of the card!

So, to answer your question. I work in a hotel, and if we only have the 16 digits and the expiration date, we can charge an amount. But even if we can charge an amount via the terminal, we will know that it will be through the hotel terminal; you cannot use your card online. However, if you provide the CVV, which a hotel might ask for, it is indeed possible for someone with bad intentions to make purchases online. But if they only have those digits and the expiration date, they won't be able to do anything. However, if you do not show up, the hotel can perform what is called a pre-authorization, which only requires the 16 digits and the expiration date, and in any case, the money will be debited via the hotel terminal. So the hotel does not need the CVV to verify that your card is valid.
