Au Pair Girl: Scam or Not?

Hello everyone!
So I have a little problem, I was contacted by a family to go as an au pair in the USA, who gave me the email address of their agency. I sent an email to the man who takes care of her at the agency, and he replied with some strange things... well maybe not, but I'm a bit paranoid and I would like your opinion because I don't want to be scammed!
First of all, the man is asking me to pay the sum of 700 dollars which I have to send to him via Western Union as soon as possible so that he can create the papers I need to go there (visa and other papers...). Moreover, I have to send this money in his own name... I'm really hesitating because 700 dollars is not a small amount... plus the family is offering me 3000 dollars a month, I could drive their car... all of this without getting to know me much beyond that! Maybe I'm being overly cautious, but I would still like your opinion!

Thank you in advance

Wow, this is definitely a scam!!!

Beware (everyone who wants to be an au pair), in 3 days, I've received 3 dream offers, one from the United States from a so-called LISA COLLINS, one from England from a FELICIA LOPEZ, and one from Australia from a so-called ISABELLE BARDECHE, all from fake agencies like "aptms.agency@yahoo.com.au"!!!

Not only will they take your money if you are unfortunate enough to believe these scammers, but they also waste a tremendous amount of our time!

Seriously, I am really angry to see that they are taking advantage of poor naive people who just want to have an experience!!!

The best thing if you want to go for a year is to find your own agency online, something serious, usually, there are registration and paperwork fees of about 200/300 euros, but some sites make you pay after a pre-registration (like FEE REVEE Association for example) to see if your profile is interesting, at least you will be sure to find a good family, get your papers and your ticket, insurance and everything you need to ensure you go safely! And paying 300 euros in the end, even if you have to cover your ticket, if it’s for a year, that’s fine because you will easily get reimbursed by your salaries!

Or else go through Aupair World, it’s a good site where you can post your ads for free, but if the family really wants to contact you, they are not only required to sign up but also have to pay a premium subscription if they want to see the email addresses or phone numbers of au pairs, so I think it’s relatively controlled for our safety!

After that, as soon as you see a family that offers you a too-good salary, or worse, their own agency contact, you can be sure it’s a scam!!!!

Finally, sorry for the length of the email, but I think it’s important to keep people informed who are still hesitating about the reliability of the information!

Good luck to you all with your searches!!

Hello,
It is possible that getting your paperwork done will cost a lot.
But in principle, if they can afford to pay you $3000 a month, why don't they cover the paperwork costs or at worst, deduct it from your salary if they don't want to pay for it?
I think you’re right, it’s suspicious because
1) They are quite wealthy, so why quibble over $700
2) If it’s a matter of principle that you’re the one paying for the paperwork, why not just deduct it from your next paycheck?
To me, it’s too questionable to send $700 out into the unknown, especially to their personal account.
If I were you, I would tell them to do the paperwork and deduct the cost from your salary in the first month.

Finally, I chose findaupair.com - I am very happy because I have three candidates that I like. We are in touch.
Too bad there was one on ABC Family who also seemed very good according to my criteria... but I can't pay for both sites!

It's a scam. Don't pay anything. You don't pay $700 to get a job...

My daughter also contacted Findaupair; I don't know if the organization is responsible for the scam she almost fell victim to, but just like you, she was in touch with a "dad" who wanted someone to take care of his 4-year-old twins for a month and a half. Since January, he had been in contact with her, and towards the end, once the passport was done, things escalated as he offered to provide her with the name of his travel agency that would handle the plane tickets. When we went to the post office to send the amount via Western Union as the agency had requested, the postal worker thankfully dissuaded us, advising us to ask for account numbers to make an interbank transfer instead. When we informed the agency, they replied from an email address of a travel agency, which I will mention for your reference: Eastern Travel Group. My daughter did some research by clicking on the picture that looked too good to be true, and she ended up finding an email address that seemed real, but when she typed it, there appeared to be 2 dots between "example"...FR. She then tried typing it without the 2 dots, putting just 1, and she found a real travel agency from London. We contacted them, and they confirmed that we should definitely not pay, as it was a scam. I want to point out that the "dad" had given us his address, which we tried to verify, and his phone number, which we also tried to look up on Intelius by signing up, as well as contacting the US Embassy (thanks for the call and the information! which cost us about 14 euros and 50 cents for not getting any further!). Please be very careful, as the addresses are always real, the names exist, and the phone numbers do too, but they are all attributed to other people or other places. I know this may seem lengthy, but since January, my daughter was so happy to be able to fulfill her dream that we wanted to believe until the end. I HOPE I HAVE BEEN HELPFUL; maybe some of you have had more positive experiences in finding a job abroad. Thank you for the information.

to join this same type of scam:
I just got contacted by a so-called doctor and his charming wife, the only problem is that the wife's emails are not in good English, I've never spoken to her on the phone, not even on skype, and above all they are asking for £500 to go to their place.

NEVER SEND MONEY TO FAMILIES OR ANYONE, AND IF THEY OFFER YOU A VERY GOOD SALARY, ASK FOR A DEDUCTION FROM THE SALARY (we can understand that families also need guarantees...)

for your information now: be wary of people who contact you via social networking sites, be very cautious, for my part, I have always used aupairworld (but there are others that are just as good) to find a family, and I have always had good experiences. Please girls, think a little: if a family wants to offer you £2000 a month along with £200 a week, if they are genuine, why do they refuse to pay €39 on a site that has proven itself and above all offers you several families.

Beware of Doctor Richard and Wendy Powel

good luck with your search

détrompe-toi Manou, moi je suis sur Aupairworld et pourtant j’ai reçu des arnaques comme celle-ci. De toute façon, je vais suivre ma première idée qui était de m'inscrire dans une organisation, ce que j'ai fait hier =)

Hello,
I am in my final year and I will only be 17 years old at the beginning of December, so next summer (in 2010) I will still be 17, unfortunately. However, I would like to go for one or two months during the summer vacation as an au pair in the United States or in America to improve my English, and especially to learn to speak English, as well as to earn some money for my future studies or projects.

If you have any information about organizations located in Montpellier or Sète, I would be very happy. Or any other information regarding my situation.

Thank you in advance.

Indeed, I was also looking for a family, so I registered on several sites including Aupair World. Generally, European families are serious. However, all the emails coming from the States are fake. I've always been directed to agencies. Moreover, I've often received emails on Facebook. The most intriguing part: in the span of three months, I received 2 different emails, with the same family photo but under two different names.

Great scam!

It definitely smells like a scam!

For an au pair, you need to refer to a reliable agency.
By the way, do you know the agency Euroconnections?

The requested documents need to be made in France and certainly not at this price. You're not but cautious, you're right Fabrice.

Hello, I am an independent journalist based in New York.
I am currently working on an article about the scams that Au Pairs fall victim to for an American news site. I am looking for French Au Pairs who have been victims of fraud by an agency or a family either before or during their stay in the United States. The idea of the article is to provide some useful tips to help future Au Pairs avoid the same pitfalls.
I can be reached at the following address tips2010@hotmail.fr
Thank you, Alexis

No way, what a joke! I replied to the same ad through the France in London site, and the family name changed to Chambers Janice!! She referred me to an agency called Travels Cares Migration that asked for money for the visa, work permit, and insurance. However, I called the embassies, and they told me I don't need any paperwork as a European wanting to move to London. At first, this agency demanded £1500 for everything, then £500 for the permit and insurance, and then £300 with decreasing rates— I was in shock. I played along, pretending I wanted to pay but insisting on more information, like a copy of my future contract, which is legal to ask for regarding insurance (advice from my mother, who is an insurer!!), and then their responses got short. Janice had forgotten her manners and was almost threatening. I'm not giving up because I wasn't naïve, but others are less so and are less experienced, so I emailed the London embassy in Paris to report it at least, based on the information I have. It's not much, but it's something! Be careful, the ad is still online!
And honestly, London, if you know someone already there or anything, take the chance; finding a job is really easy, and it will also be a very personal experience :)

WARNING SCAM RICHARD POWEL
HE TAKES ADDRESSES OF AU PAIR GIRLS ON SITES LIKE ABCFAMILIES AUPAIRWORLD
he offers a lot of money, sends photos, and wants to pick us up directly at the airport, but as soon as we talk about a meeting, he stops responding, and I found a scam forum on Facebook and saw the same emails he sent me!!!!!!!

email:

Hello,

My Name is Richard Powel and my wife Joy. We are a British family working and living in Paris, France, and we have just been posted to London 2 months ago. I work with Orange Media Telecommunication company, while my wife Anita works as a Nurse in St George Hospital London. We have 2 kids, Michelle and Paul, and are looking for an Au Pair from any country that is willing to stay with us for a period of 3-6 months.

Michelle is the eldest and the lady of the house after her mum, she's 9 years old while Paul is the boss and he's just 8 years old. We saw your profile on the ABC site and decided to contact you, to discuss the possibilities of having you as our au pair in the spirit of cultural exchange. We're a laid-back and happy family based in South Kensington, London, and have been here for up to 13 years. The kids are close to winter holidays so you won't have to take them to school. The beautiful winter weather is there for you to enjoy if you are willing to come and we can assure you that London with her beauty will be fun for you. There are lots of places to visit, Buckingham Palace, beaches, country parks, adventure parks, activity farms, seaside towns, forest walks... you just name them! The kids are easygoing and as such you can get along with them so easily. They love the indoors a lot, you could occupy them with kiddies movies and Cartoon Network and you can be sure to have little to do for them. They love drawing and painting as well, Paul is so much of a video game addict, and Michelle loves much attention. About accommodation, we will provide you with a room and you will have your own personal toilet and bathroom with Internet Access so as to reach your family members and loved ones. We will pay you 1000 GBP Monthly and a pocket money of 100 pounds weekly. You are free to study during your free time when the kids are off to school in order to improve your English language or do any special program that will add more value to your life. We shall make available a vehicle for you to use if you can drive. Kindly let us know when you can be available because we would like an au pair that can start as soon as possible. Please reply to us if you would like to discuss the position with us, while you send your pictures and your introductory message to enable us to know you better.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!
Lots of Love,

Regards

Richard Powel

HI
I'M SANDRINE. I'VE ALREADY BEEN AN AU PAIR THREE TIMES AND I EITHER BOUGHT MY FLIGHT TICKETS OR IT WAS PAID FOR BY THE FAMILY.
IN YOUR CASE, IT'S A SCAM BECAUSE AFRICANS OFTEN DO THIS; THEY ASK YOU TO SEND A PART OF THE AMOUNT AND THEY PAY THE REST BUT YOU NEVER SEE ANYONE AGAIN.
DON'T GIVE HIM ANYTHING AND YOU'LL SEE IT'S A SCAM BY LOOKING BACK AT HIS EMAILS. YOU'LL SEE THEY SPEAK POOR ENGLISH OR THEY HAVE MULTIPLE EMAIL ADDRESSES. THEY NEVER MENTION THE INFORMATION YOU PROVIDE AND ON TOP OF THAT, THEY PROMISE YOU $2000 AS A SALARY AND $300 FOR POCKET MONEY BUT THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE.
DON'T LET YOURSELF BE FOOLED

Bonjour ! Is the email you mentioned a scam? Because I want to go au pair and this family sent me exactly the same email! Have you had more contact with them?? Thank you for replying as soon as possible! Thank you, Mélanie.

Hello Meelee and Mariou,

I received exactly the same email, I thought it was great at first but then it got weirder and weirder. I have to contact an agency named usaconsulates@live.com. Isn't it strange for a consulate to have a hotmail address? I also find their way of speaking to me a bit impersonal; they call me "future au pair," just like you, without ever mentioning my name, and they don't ask for any information about me besides my resume. And I asked them for photos, which was brushed aside!
SO, big question, is this a scam or not?

Let's keep each other posted,

Thanks,

Chloé

Of course it is a scam, it's clear.

On my side, I go through the abcfamilies site, and I don’t encounter all the problems mentioned above.

Maybe it's because there's SMS identification, which complicates things for our friends in Cameroon/Nigeria, the little jokers who pretend to be fake families or fake candidates.

NEVER SEND MONEY

Recently I discovered the abc families blog, there are some pretty good articles:

See you

Faites attention !!!!

Hello!

I am also looking to go au pair this summer, so I searched for websites on the internet. I came across the site "http://www.olespain.org/pag/fra_aupair.html". It was the third site when I typed "au pair girl in Spain".

They describe an agency that finds us a family for the sum of 90 euros. It’s tempting considering other sites offer rates around 250 euros. There’s a form to fill out and everything...

But the catch is that there are no reviews about this site. I searched for a long time on the internet but found nothing. Moreover, they gave us an address and when I checked it on Google Maps, I found a furniture store at the indicated address... I have really big doubts now!! Can someone shed some light on this issue?

I have sent an email to their email address... I will see what they respond...

Thank you for your help!!
