What is the purpose of Keygen software?

Hello,
I downloaded this tiny software called Keygen.. And I’m wondering what it’s for??
I see numbers and letters when I click on "generate"... (e.g. 5gy7u90)... What is it??
A password??
Help me,

      Does it create keys (passwords) ..??
      For example ...does it create a password for a software for which I have lost its password ..??
