Tabulation issues in Word

Hello everyone,
I have a problem with Word (I'm using Word 2003) that I've never encountered before, without any explanation. If I select a portion of text and hit tab, that portion of text gets erased.
Until now, the selected portion would normally shift.
Did I accidentally click somewhere I shouldn't have? I've gone through all the options in the software, and I've looked for an answer online, but I can't find anything.
If anyone could help me with my request...
