Hello,
I can't associate an image with its caption in a Word 2003 document. I'm trying the following steps:
Selection > "Draw" tab > "Group"
Unfortunately, the "Group" button is greyed out, and I don’t know why. Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. One more question, after grouping the image and caption, will I still be able to create a table of illustrations? Thanks.

What you are asking for is not possible. We can only group imported objects; not objects and text.
Every time you move your image, you will also need to move the caption.
But there's no need to move the images: Their insertion should occur after all the text is entered, and captions are added after all the images are permanently positioned.

It seems to me that it's possible; I must have done this manipulation with images and their captions for an office course... But well.
The problem is that this is not a final document. It is a procedure that will be updated regularly and not following the document. It is, in a way, a user assistance document for software developed internally by the company where I work. That's why I would have liked to be able to manipulate the images and their captions as a single block... (especially since when I activate the framed wrapping, the caption is placed with the rest of the text, which bothers me in the presentation.

Good evening Raymond,
Great, we’ll be able to pop the champagne!!!! ;)))
So, if we want to get a table of illustrations, the caption needs to have a style (Default Caption), AND it must not be in a text box or an automatic shape. Raymond made a good bet! ;)
By the way, when we add a caption via the menu to an image with wrapping, the caption automatically ends up in a text box, and it is impossible to process these captions as they are; they need to be converted into a frame: right-click on the text box, format, text box, click on convert to frame.
This does not solve the grouping issue.
The other solution, which is much more interesting, is to insert these images in a table cell that we can also wrap as we wish. The caption can thus be inserted directly into the table cell. A double advantage since in this case, moving the image will also move the caption (grouping).
Furthermore, I would add that in Word, rather than using grouping, it is far more practical to use drawing areas. But this is another topic.

There’s no need to send me questions in private messages... I definitely won’t answer them... The forum is made for that.

At first, it was not meant to create a table of illustrations.
For tables, I use them for many things, for that too, but the fact of grouping objects, combining photos (framing and boxes), automatic shapes, text areas, etc... allows you to create very interesting brochures, posters, if you don't have specialized software on hand.
See you soon

Hello,
Well, in fact, that was in the initial question:
"P.S. One more question, after grouping the image and caption, will I still be able to create a table of illustrations? Thank you."
I reiterate regarding grouping: it is preferable to use the drawing areas designed specifically for that... Don't forget that this is Word and Word is a word processor. If we start having a lot of images with wrapping, it struggles to manage...

I'm coming in, but thank you so much M@rina, I was banging my head against the walls and tearing my hair out. But thanks to your explanations, I still have a little tuft on the top of my head that I hadn't violently pulled out yet, and I will take care of it from now on. (I have to say that I had about forty captions that didn't appear in my list of illustrations and I couldn't imagine starting all over...)
You insert your image into your Word document, you select your image, either you click on picture format or with the right button on your image, you click on picture format, in the small window that just opened you click on the wrap tab, then on square and on OK.
Next you go to auto shapes and you select a caption, then you click on each image, holding down shift, and you go to the drawing toolbar and you click on group.
At my place, it works and I do it regularly.

I think you know that there is a way to add a "Drawing" toolbar, which usually appears at the bottom of the Word page. On the far left of this toolbar, there is a "Draw" menu. When you click on it, you have about ten options to choose from for your layout, including the following buttons: "Group", "Ungroup", and "Regroup".
What I want to do is group each image in my document with its caption so that I can move these images as I please without having to repeat the process to move the caption. And since I need to create a list of illustrations in this document, I cannot create a text box containing the image and its caption. The illustration indexing will not recognize it.
There you go, I hope that's the explanation you were hoping for.
