Hello,
well, I have a little problem. I spent the beginning of the evening searching, with no results!!
So it's my sound that's acting up. When I try to test my speakers, it says "unable to play the test tone." The worst part is that it works 1 time out of 2!
Meanwhile, when opening a sound or video file, my Windows Media Player gives me: "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional help, click Help on the Web.
That's all!
Regarding drivers, I've checked, I have the latest!! I checked in the device manager... there is no conflict, no problem!! I installed some codecs, but that has nothing to do with the test tones... I don't understand anything!
I'm lost!! The worst part, as I said before, is that it works once in a while (when I restart).
Please, does anyone have a solution?Configuration: Windows Vista
Internet Explorer 7.0

You open the Properties dialog for an audio device in the Sound Control Panel on a Windows Vista computer. You may then find that duplicate entries are listed in the Default Format list under the Advanced tab of the Properties dialog. When you select one of the entries and then click on test, an error message similar to the following may appear:
Unable to play the test tone
After this issue occurs, you may not be able to use other audio playback programs. For example, programs like Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center do not play sounds correctly.
This problem may occur after changing the entry in the Default Format list for the device. To open the Default Format list for the device, follow these steps:
1. Click Start
Reduce this imageEnlarge this image
Start button
, type mmsys.cpl in the Search box, and then click mmsys.cpl in the programs list.
2. Click on an audio device listed, then click Properties.
3. Click on the Advanced tab and note the items listed in the Default Format list.

Hooray!
Thank you!
Having an HP Pavilion Dv6, and not having sound since my system restoration, and finding nothing on the internet. I completely removed the sound devices, which, upon restarting, reinstalled correctly, and then, miracle, the sound came back!
So for those who find this page next:
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run > devmgmt.msc > Ok.
Sound, video and game controllers
(Right click on sound cards) > Uninstall > Delete the driver for this device.
Restart your computer and that's it!

Not necessarily, but it happens that some of them conflict with each other. Try uninstalling them and see if it works or not. Have you tried doing a system restore??? Or repairing Vista???
so I uninstalled all my codecs!! I installed VLC player --->
I'm testing my speakers again, it's not working, it's still the same.
however, I can play a video, but I don't have sound! so the problem is not with the codec but it comes from the sound!!! but where?? I have no problems with my peripherals.
please if anyone can help me.. thanks in advance.

System restore? Repair Vista?
Man, it's been barely a week since I got this PC, it shouldn't be this bad!
Okay, I'm going to try uninstalling this codec pack... but I thought it was a good pack for Vista according to the comments online... I don't know if I'm going to find a better one! :-0
Something else weird: before my 7.1 system was acting up a bit (it's old), meaning the sound was crackling (even without music, video, or anything) and now... nothing! Not a single sound when I'm on the desktop and I turn up the volume... but one out of two times I can't test this tone.... it can't be the codecs, that's impossible... anyway... it's starting to grow on me...
Anyway, have a good day!

No, you won't lose any personal data; there will just be a newer version at the level of your bios, nothing to do with your personal data. Don't worry.
yep,
okok thanks for the info!!
I deleted vista codec pack, I installed another one... I checked and unchecked a few boxes in the sound options
and there you go.. now the sound works every time!! It just goes to show, with computers, it doesn’t take much to drive you crazy!
For now, everything's good!
If it acts up again... I’ll do a BIOS update.

oh no!!!
I spoke too fast!!
So I see where the error comes from!!
It’s been bugging since I installed Steam!
I hadn’t opened it for a while so it was fine!
I reopened it and bam
it’s messing up again! So I can't test my peripherals.. and I can’t listen to music or watch movies anymore!!!
But why does Steam mess things up like this????

Yes, if you add a sound card, it should "work" perfectly. Well, your computer should still be under warranty, so check with customer service; it would be a shame to buy a sound card for a brand new computer, don't you think? And your motherboard has HD (audio).
However, it must be a bug with the motherboard that's causing your issue because you're not the only one experiencing this sound problem with this card; apparently, a BIOS update would solve the issue.

Either he has a virus (do a scan with your antivirus and HijackThis, then post the log here) or there is an incompatibility with a program or with your system. Do you use this software often??? The positive point is that you know where the problem comes from. Safe mode, antivirus check, and HijackThis check (don't forget to post the HijackThis log) and see if that resolves the issue; if not, uninstall Steam.
Best regards

So I performed a scan: there's nothing special.

How can we detect a problem in there???
I use Steam occasionally to play online with 2 or 3 games... it would bother me to uninstall it.
I found a little workaround, before opening Steam, I play a song (mp3), at that moment the sound does not cut off..

How can we detect a problem in there???
I use Steam occasionally to play online with 2 or 3 games... it would bother me to uninstall it.
I found a little workaround, before opening Steam, I play a song (mp3), at that moment the sound does not cut off..

ok thanks a lot for your time, it's cool ;-)
I just wanted to know how you knew to delete those lines! why those lines and not others??
so I can fix it if it happens again..
thanks anyway... my CPU has decreased. as for the sound issue, I don't really care.. if it happens again I'll install XP.
have a good evening

Thank you for your help..
Right now it's working, in the speaker properties under default formats, I'm reading 16bit 44100Hz CD quality.
When the sound messes up, do I need to change this rate??
Is that right?
In any case, thank you
Have a good day

I'm going to try to uninstall my codecs (already done many times but it worked once out of ten!! it's k-lite!!) while waiting for your response, thanks in advance.
Hello, I have the same problem.
Since this morning, no sound
Same here: when I try to test my speakers: "unable to play the test tone"
Same here: when opening a sound file, Windows Media Player says: "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file..."
Well, I'm thinking: it's exactly the same problem.
Then I see that it's Steam that's to blame: I had it too, and it caused me problems before I uninstalled it!
More info about my computer:
Yesterday I updated to Vista pack 2, it went well. (I hadn't uninstalled Steam yet)
Then I had this sound problem.
After disabling and re-enabling my audio devices, nothing changes.
After updating drivers, still no sound.
Same after several restarts and 2 updates of Vista.
My 2 audio devices are:
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
High Definition Audio Device
Any ideas to restore the sound?
Restore a setting that Steam modified?
Help, thanks

Hi there, I've partially solved the sound problem on my computer (I also have the IDT high definition thing and the other one too!! :) they're the ones causing the trouble!! My computer is an HP DV6 1120sf, I installed Vista Service Pack 2 and K-Lite Codec Pack 462. So here's what I did: I uninstalled K-Lite and then the IDT thing and the other one. (Important!!! Reconnect all your USB peripherals before restarting!!) I have USB speakers, and when I restart, hallelujah, sound!!! But be careful, your computer will reinstall your two "things" (because it really likes them!!) Once reinstalled, DO NOT TOUCH THE SOUND and do not reinstall any codecs!!! and restart the computer once again, it should work!! To play videos use VLC and for music use iTunes, but I no longer use Windows Media Player because I believe it's part of the conspiracy too!!
There you go, I hope I was clear (I just got up, sorry ;) if anyone has a real solution, let me know!!!!

@bereal it's a technique that indeed works, but as you explain, it only "partially" solves the problem. After doing what you suggested, I did see a return to normalcy, except that I have a very bitter feeling that the bass is much less present than before and that the mids are more pronounced.
Also, the red light on my powered speakers stays red even when they're on (I have a Pavilion dv61120ef and no KLite codec installed).

Hello everyone!
I see that I wasn't the only one with this problem...
When I had this issue with the sound, I would restart the PC and it was fine...
Now I've installed Windows 7! I reinstalled Steam... I have no issues like that or any other sort, actually...
But indeed, I think certain codecs can mess everything up!
gagar2: do you have absolutely no sound (even after rebooting) after installing Steam?
Best regards

PS: I know this forum is from 2009, I really hope someone will reply to me otherwise I think I'm going to go crazy!
So I would also like some heeeeeeeeeelp!!! Thanks in advance!
Sakina, if you haven't tried restoring yet (which doesn't delete your software or documents), do it, but as soon as the sound works again, remember to make a restore point for next time, in case it happens again like it did to me...
