Hello,
well, I have a little problem. I spent the beginning of the evening searching, with no results!!
So it's my sound that's acting up. When I try to test my speakers, it says "unable to play the test tone." The worst part is that it works 1 time out of 2!
Meanwhile, when opening a sound or video file, my Windows Media Player gives me: "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional help, click Help on the Web.

That's all!

Regarding drivers, I've checked, I have the latest!! I checked in the device manager... there is no conflict, no problem!! I installed some codecs, but that has nothing to do with the test tones... I don't understand anything!
I'm lost!! The worst part, as I said before, is that it works once in a while (when I restart).

Please, does anyone have a solution?Configuration: Windows Vista
Internet Explorer 7.0

You open the Properties dialog for an audio device in the Sound Control Panel on a Windows Vista computer. You may then find that duplicate entries are listed in the Default Format list under the Advanced tab of the Properties dialog. When you select one of the entries and then click on test, an error message similar to the following may appear:

Unable to play the test tone

After this issue occurs, you may not be able to use other audio playback programs. For example, programs like Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center do not play sounds correctly.

This problem may occur after changing the entry in the Default Format list for the device. To open the Default Format list for the device, follow these steps:

1. Click Start

Start button
, type mmsys.cpl in the Search box, and then click mmsys.cpl in the programs list.
2. Click on an audio device listed, then click Properties.
3. Click on the Advanced tab and note the items listed in the Default Format list.

I have the same problem as you!!! It also happened 2 days ago after an update... I fixed the issue (temporarily, I'm getting to that) by restoring the system to an earlier restore point (thank goodness I had one from December 10!). It worked well, my speakers were working again, great!! Today, my PC restarted by itself to perform (again) that f***ing update... I tried to do the same manipulation, and bam, no restore points are available anymore! I looked on several forums but none of the suggested steps work because all the settings are normal, the drivers and everything are up to date, except that I can't perform a test, it says "unable to read the tone of this test" and of course, still no sound!!!
So I would also like some heeeeeeeeeelp!!! Thanks in advance!
Sakina, if you haven't tried restoring yet (which doesn't delete your software or documents), do it, but as soon as the sound works again, remember to make a restore point for next time, in case it happens again like it did to me...
