Word crash when printing panel

Hello,

I'm encountering an embarrassing crashing problem with Word.

Regarding editing, no issues.

But when I open the print window, as soon as I activate a property (Properties, Options), Word closes systematically. And if I do nothing, after a minute Word closes automatically. On the other hand, if I select a Word file in my explorer, and right-click to start the print task... it works.

I know that reinstalling Word doesn’t solve anything because the settings are retained.

But how do I get rid of this problem?

A few potentially useful details:

- I’m using an HP PhotoSmart C4380 printer which until now has been working well, even with Word.

- With other Office tools, especially Excel, everything works fine.

- The problem appeared recently, and I don’t feel like I’ve installed any conflicting software, except maybe OpenOffice 3.0, which is now uninstalled: I had replaced OpenOffice.org 2.4 with OpenOffice.org 3.0… then uninstalled both. However, there are still files left in the Program Files folder.

Thank you very much for your help, as I'm at a loss...
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.0.5

Here's a little summary of the problem.

The crash comes from the printer driver, which does not support older versions of Word.

So, two solutions:

- either uninstall Office 97 and install a more recent version (Office 2007 for example)

- or keep this version of Office, but install an older, compatible printer driver. For example, the HP Deskjet 990c: I tried it, it works.

I hope this will help you!

2 last clarifications:

- I am using Office 97

- No issues when I click on the quick print icon (which prints the entire document with standard settings). The problem seems to come from the print panel in Word.

OK: After several unsuccessful searches on the internet, I finally uninstalled and reinstalled my printer.
Everything is working again.

The problem probably stemmed from the management of the print driver, but I don't understand how this could have happened: can opening a Word document cause this kind of issue? I'm especially thinking about the possibility of a macro virus...

Thank you for your opinion.

Actually, no: reinstalling the printer driver (and the printer's associated software) only worked once.

The problem reappeared as soon as I used Word for the second time, without installing any other software in the meantime.

Help!

...and the complete uninstallation procedure for Word proposed by Microsoft, involving a manipulation in the registry, doesn’t yield any results either: a new installation of Word presents the same problem.

Grrrrrrrrr it’s enough to drive you crazy!!

Does anyone have a solution?

Thank you for your responses and the time you dedicate to lost internet users ;)

Hi, I have Word Starter 2010, and I had to download the driver to install my HP C6300 series printer. On the day of the installation, I could print without any issues, but after turning off and restarting my PC, when I go to "printer properties," Word crashes completely, and I have to close it with the task manager. Even with another printer connected via USB cable, it doesn't detect it, although it used to before. I don’t understand.
