What is the purpose of the layout file in prefetch

Good evening,
does anyone know what the layout.ini file in the prefetch folder is for? Because I accidentally deleted it while emptying the prefetch folder :o . So far, everything is working. Thank you
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.0.5

    Hi,
    Try this manipulation found at this link.
    Type this (respecting the case: copy/paste!)
    Start > Run
    Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
    It is supposed to recreate the layout.ini file for you.

    I did the trick, it recreated it,
    it's back in the prefetch folder :)
