Connecting TV to satellite dish with or without decoder

Question

Hello,  I just bought a plasma screen TV with built-in DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television)  when I connect the TV to the antenna coming directly from the satellite dish, it doesn't detect any channels.  I thought I needed a decoder, so I retrieved an old decoder from my satellite dish and connected the antenna from the dish to this decoder, and linked my TV using a SCART connector.  This setup works except that I only get channels 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and not the DTT channels (maybe because the decoder doesn't support DTT?) yet the TV does support DTT  so here is my question:  do I absolutely need a decoder after a satellite dish, and does this decoder also need to support DTT?  thank you in advance for your help, I'm a bit lost here.. Yes, the decoder needs to support terrestrial TNT. The terrestrial TNT signal is not the same as the satellite signal.

Hello, indeed, a satellite dish alone cannot work like a Hertzian antenna. Which satellite is your dish aimed at? For my part, I'm on Astra with a 60 cm dish and an analog decoder, and I get the 6 national channels. With Orange TV connected to my PC (I can't receive it through the PTT socket, my Orange decoder is connected to an 80 cm dish aimed at HOTBIRD, and there I get the 6 national channels plus TNT. So in your case, I think your dish needs to be aimed at Hotbird, and you'll need a digital decoder. Ask an antenna technician for more information, that's still the best option.

not on Hotbird but Astra 19.2° mine is set up like that with a SAT TNT decoder

re, I forgot to connect 2 televisions to the same satellite dish, you need a 2 or 3-way splitter, and a decoder for each TV, otherwise you'll have to watch the same programs at the same time on both connected TVs, which isn't great. there you go @@@

re, while searching on CCM I found some interesting things. Do you have a collective antenna like a (rake) or an independent antenna apart from your satellite dish? Is your area of residence covered by digital terrestrial television (TNT) or not? Because apparently, if you are in a TNT covered area, you can connect a simple rake antenna to your TV and receive TNT without a decoder, since it’s integrated into your television, you just need to perform an automatic search on your TV. On the other hand, if you only have a satellite dish, I think you are required to use a digital decoder. @@@
