Hello,
I need to replace the hard drive in my Sony RDR HX 710 recorder. I installed a new one with the same specifications: 160GB, 7200 RPM, IDE. It is not recognized and I get the message: HDD ERROR that keeps blinking on the device. I tried the method provided on this site for the HX 900 (Rec pause button, system menu, and tools) but without success.
Thank you for your help.

for those still looking:
- connect the "CINCH" LINE OUT 2 to a monitor
- remove the power
- restore the power
- a "WELCOME" message appears on the front of the HX710
- press and hold the 3 buttons: REC, REC PAUSE, REC STOP for 10 seconds
- a special menu appears on the monitor
- go to option 9 (hard drive)
- write ID
- format (EVERYTHING WILL BE LOST !!!)
sometimes the operation needs to be done twice...

Is your hard drive formatted? If so, with what type of partition?

My drive is new. I haven’t formatted it. The formatting is proprietary Sony. My old drive connected to a PC is not recognized by Windows.

"The formatting is proprietary Sony."
I don't understand. Explain yourself.
And is the old hard drive connected to your PC recognized in the disk management?

My old disk is not recognized in disk management on my PC.
I loaded a demo version of EasyRecovery Professional from the Ontrack.fr website. This software sees my disk but cannot read the data on it.
By proprietary Sony formatting, I mean that the disk is not formatted by a PC application. It is a Sony application that is not compatible with PC. For your information, I spoke to Sony France on the phone, and they mentioned a VR-type formatting.

Hello Redalf,
I wanted to know if you solved your problem because I have the same one as you
problem with Sony RDR HX 710 HDD error.
I wish to replace it with a hard drive of the same type, but how should I format it so that it is recognized by my recorder?
Thank you for your help.
Best regards,
