Hello,    Configuration: Windows / Firefox 69.0  I have Windows 10 on my PC. When starting Thunderbird 68.0, which was loaded for an update without destroying the previous version or specifying any settings during the installation (except launching Thunderbird), I encountered the infamous message "Couldn't load xpcom" when clicking both on the file C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird	hunderbird.exe and its shortcut on the desktop. After removing its icon from the taskbar, I could no longer launch the program. However, by reloading the program, I realized that the icon that returned to the taskbar was able to launch Thunderbird. The problems were not resolved, but circumvented. To solve the issue, I wanted to 1° uninstall Thunderbird, then 2° delete the Mozilla program folders, and 3° clean the PC (with AV security, and not with RocketPC which I uninstalled suspecting, perhaps wrongly, that it destroyed – with my permission – something necessary). Finally, I wanted to reload Thunderbird again. To uninstall Thunderbird, I opened the list of my programs on my PC. There, I discovered that I had two Thunderbirds 60.0: one 60.8.0 (x86 fr) installed on 14.7.2019; the other 68.0 (x64 fr) installed on 9.9.2019. In the file explorer, the x86 generates the infamous message; the x64 and its shortcut on the desktop work normally. I click uninstall the x86, but long after, it is still there, and its folder exists. That's the problem that remains. The taskbar icon indeed launches the x64. And that's probably why it worked. I am sure of my observations, but I don't quite understand what is happening. I don't know where the x86 comes from, nor if it was the one that was functioning before I installed the x64. I hope I have been helpful and that a more competent person will tell me how to uninstall the bad one. Besançon, 11.9.19.

Response to your last two interventions.

In the first of the two, there is a missing reference on RocketPC. I found: (hxxps://sensorstechforum.com/fr/remove-rocketpc-performance-monitor/ [edit mod, dangerous site] They talk about Malware remover. I ran Malwarebytes (suggested by a contributor on CCM). I think it's the same thing?

Response to the second intervention. By holding Control, opening C:\Program Files 60.8 (x86)\Thunderbird, both normally and as Administrator, gets stuck on the same famous message.

As I plead guilty for having an infected PC, I am in no position to give opinions that seem not to implicate the infection. Still, I’ll say this.

The only problem I have is that I cannot delete the old Thunderbird that is not working. In fact, it’s hardly a concern. I think it’s the new one that prevents the old one from being deleted because it could be that some elements of the old one serve the new one. If it interests any technicians, I could first delete the good one, then see if the bad one can be deleted afterward, after which I would reload the latest from the Mozilla site. But as far as I'm concerned, I’ll let it go. I said: unless.

I want to emphasize one thing: as usual, I downloaded and installed all my Thunderbirds with the default settings. The fact that I have two Thunderbird folders, as I later discovered, does not depend on me. In my humble opinion... this likely comes from Thunderbird, unless it shows that a PC infection – which has not (yet) manifested any particular problems – can cause this phenomenon.

Hello fvalois,  Where did you see that you had to hold down Control???  I said "by holding down the "Shift" key during startup. "  Do you think that's the same thing?

I no longer remember if the confusion between Control and Shift is in the writing or in the maneuver. I thus restarted the maneuver with Shift held down. The result is the same.

For your information, I had no issues with my PC, except with Google Calendar. I wanted to create an event for all the following days and delete the series of events starting from a certain date. I kept getting the message saying that this operation was not possible at the moment and that I needed to try again in a few minutes. I finally restarted the PC. Nothing had been done in the calendar, and the maneuver was completed on the first try without any issues.

Thank you for taking care of the Thunderbird problem, especially since there is no urgency. And please excuse my mistakes.

I know and I am sure I wrote: "Start Thunderbird in safe mode by holding down the "Shift" key during startup."  This can be verified in my previous response.  If I press the "Shift" key and hold it while clicking on the Thunderbird startup icon, I get this:   Too complicated?  You click on "Continue in safe mode" and you have access to the list of add-ons via Tools / Add-ons.

I persist and I restart the process: a left click on C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\Thunderbird opens a context menu with open and run as administrator. Holding Shift while clicking on one, open, gives the message "'Couldn't load Xpcom" and pressing OK on that message window does not go further. The same goes for clicking the other one, as administrator.

You do this with a different result: you start in safe mode. But your Thunderbird has no issues at all.

I add that your functioning is the case with the Thunderbird from the other folder C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\Thunderbird.exe. It works regularly without any problems and, when starting in safe mode with Shift held down, it correctly shows the window you sent me.

The first one you mention doesn't have a .exe extension. It's not an executable program!

And the last one you mentioned that works, which one is it? What version?

So, to summarize:

You are on W10 and there are two program folders on your system's C drive.

The Program Files (x86) folder and the Programs folder, one for 32-bit programs and the other for 64-bit programs.

You have two Thunderbirds because the new version 38.0 installed in the folder for 64-bit programs even though it is 32-bit, but it doesn't matter. This allows you to have both.

I just checked again: If you hold down the Shift key (not to be confused with the "Caps Lock" key) when you do a double left-click or if you right-click to show the context menu and then left-click on "open" (not to be confused with "Run as administrator"), Thunderbird starts without fail.

A program normally starts with a double left-click on its executable or its icon.
A context menu is produced only by a right-click.
Do not mix and confuse the two!
This relates to the use of mouse buttons. Do you at least have one?
Now, I’m giving you a beginner’s course on Windows!

You can also, from the context menu, choose "Pin to taskbar" to have an icon in it (it’s definitely more convenient than rummaging through files to start a program!!! In W10, an active program icon is underlined in blue and is not when it is not active. I recommend keeping icons for the most frequently used programs in the taskbar permanently, contrary to your weird idea of only leaving active programs there!)
Another option from the context menu is "create shortcut," which allows you to create this shortcut in the same folder as the executable program, then copy and paste it to place it on the desktop. Again, it's more convenient than rummaging through program files!

If you hold down the Shift key while you left-click on the taskbar icon or double-click on a created icon on the desktop, the result is the same: Safe startup.

So, are we ever going to see the list of extensions from the old version?

If you admit that, as I formally told you, I opened Thunderbird in safe mode on the first try and got the window you showed me, it would have been enough to tell me to apply the same method for the Thunderbird that doesn't work.
I therefore add that I have applied the same method many times for this other one but always without any result other than the famous message.
If you don't believe me, which I admit is understandable since it's implausible to you, we still have to schedule a time for you to access my computer and see for yourself. I'm willing to risk looking a bit foolish.

PS. Having more space on my desks than on the taskbar, I put my icons there. The taskbar therefore directly indicates to me, as it used to, the open programs. Since my wife prefers to always have the icons of the few programs she uses in the taskbar, I left them for her without any problem as hovering the mouse indicates what is open.

Yes, you need patience to chase the Arlésienne. So thank you for your patience, even though I think the problem lies elsewhere.
I will wait a bit longer in case the situation interests someone, especially from Mozilla, and I will uninstall the good one which I think prevents the bad one from being uninstalled. If the uninstallation doesn’t go through, I will delete the folder and clean the registry. And I will reinstall the good one.

No, the good version does not prevent the bad one from being uninstalled because they are in different directories! Just uninstall TB V68 after backing up your "Profiles" folder for safety, and without deleting your folders or cleaning the registry (be careful, dangerous area!!! Don't play the apprentice wizard!!!), then reinstall over version 60.9 available for download here:

Thank you for this information. I won't touch the good one (the 60.8) (unless I can later add Signal Spam when it's possible) if it doesn’t prevent uninstalling the bad one (the 60.8) (Although they are certainly in different folders, they seem to share the same AppData),
Why do you ask me to replace the good one when I'm happy with it? And what to do about uninstalling the bad one?
When you talk about backing up Profiles for safety, it is indeed the Local one and not the Roaming (or both?). When you can’t find your accounts and settings after a reinstallation, you bring back this (or these) Profiles. That’s right?

I’m making you uninstall V68.0 because it doesn’t support add-ons yet. In any case, back up the profile folder. It’s the one whose path you can find in “? / Troubleshooting Information / Profile Folder / Open Folder”
It’s located in the Appdata / Roaming folder

Furthermore, the Extensions subfolder of the profile contains the list of extensions (.xpi).
If you can give me the list, we might see which one is infected.

Hello fvalois,

Little correction: these are not your "profiles" but the extensions of your profile!

If you have made a backup of your profile by copying the entire "profiles" folder elsewhere, you can safely try deleting these files one by one and see if it resolves or modifies the problem.
You can always put them back in place from your backup.

From what I found elsewhere, I believe it's related to the Lightning extension (the calendar) of Thunderbird.

Both have a creation date close to the time your problem appeared.

Now, we're going fishing!

By successively removing the two "default-release" from the Thunderbird Profile, the bad one always gives the same famous message, even in safe mode.
The same goes for removing "default". And then the good one doesn't work, indicating the absence of a profile.
Restoring these files makes the good one OK.
And the bad one still cannot be uninstalled. Everything seems to go smoothly, but after granting permission to modify the system, the program is still there. And you can start over indefinitely.

Oh dear, you're playing with fire!!!  I never told you to delete the profile but to successively remove each of the add-ons that are in the "extensions" folder of your profile.  Of course, by deleting the profile, the good TB no longer works because they both share the same profile!!!  I'd rather stop here because you're uncontrollable and doing whatever. Too bad, I did what I could!  I won't respond to you anymore.
