Hello everyone,
My PC refuses to start, I received several error messages, including one stating that I needed to reinstall the hal.dll file, which I did. Since then, it freezes even more at startup and shows me this message:
"Windows did not start due to a software error.
The loading program needed DLL for the kernel "
Could someone explain to me what this means and tell me how to fix the problem, if possible.
THANK YOU!

The solution to the problem is simple:
Boot the computer from a startup disk (if you don't have one, you can get one at www.bootdisk.com)
and access the command prompt. Enter the following commands:
C:
edit boot.ini
You will access BOOT.INI, which by default looks like:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
The error often comes from the partition number indicated (this often happens after installing a second operating system). Change partition(1) to partition(2), and if it still doesn't work, keep changing the number until you find the right one. If you don't want to edit BOOT.INI multiple times, copy the entire line after [operating systems] and change the number in each one; you will only have to try the different options that will be available to you at the next startup.
Another tip:
copy the entire line after [operating systems] again and add after /fastdetect: /safeboot:minimal /sos /bootlog
Change the name of the option to "Safe Mode"
You now have an option in the menu that allows you to access safe mode without having to press F8 during startup.

I also have the same problem and I would like to format to solve these issues once and for all, but obviously when I start with the CD (no floppy disk drive), my keyboard doesn't respond when repairing or installing! Great!
Should I throw away my PC? lol
Thank you for replying.

I have this problem only when I want to start on Seven. In fact, my hard drive has 2 partitions and the installation of XP is causing me so many problems.

I completely understood what you meant exactly! I tried with a bootable disk, but there is no access to the command prompt at startup!!!
Please help help!!
