TV screen half black Solved

Question

Hello,

When I look at my Philips TV, suddenly the screen is half black with a bright line in the middle separating the black area from the image.

I turned it off and then back on, but it doesn't change.
I unplugged the power cord (while the TV is on) and plugged it back in, and the image came back, but the problem keeps returning.

Does anyone know what this could be due to?

I want to reassure you a bit, the issue, without having seen it, is certainly related to a failure in a circuit called horizontal scanning. This problem is initially caused either by a cold solder joint or by the destruction of a component. It's better to turn off your TV to avoid causing chain reactions and irreparable damage. You won't be able to fix this issue on your own unless you are knowledgeable; these circuits can be dangerous to approach, there's a risk of electrocution even with the TV turned off. I think you should call a (reputable) professional and request a repair estimate to avoid surprises.

But why is it that when I turn it off (unplug it and then plug it back in), the picture is normal again?

Could the problem also be related to the connections?
1 VCR with TNT (antenna on the VCR) (on the first Scart socket)
1 decoder (on the VCR)
1 VCR (really bad for cassettes) (on the second Scart socket)
1 WII (connected to the TV on the front)

And when I turn on the TV, it turns on but I have to press a button on the remote for an image to appear (it seems to go into standby mode when I turn it on)
This problem started since I connected the TNT antenna, which is plugged into the VCR
and the WII (causing half the screen to be black)

Could it be related to that, or is it just a coincidence?

revised your new information.. maybe but a little maybe ..

1) for the image when you turn on your TV it's normal you have to choose the input signal
2) you must have quite a mess behind your TV, I assume your TV is equipped with 2 SCART sockets and that you're using power strips to connect all your little devices that might be the reason your TV doesn't know where to look with all the AV inputs
3) try connecting with just the 2 SCART sockets intended for that and see if the problem persists that is to say 1 device 1 SCART..

I would like to add that turning off a TV by the plug is not recommended; your TV thinks it’s a power outage and goes into standby mode to restart. It's normal to turn it back on with the remote control, just like when you put your TV on standby.

PS: you didn’t mention if it works with normal TV reception?
If it doesn’t work and even if nothing is plugged in and your screen isn’t fully illuminated, I confirm my diagnosis of a horizontal sweep failure (turn off the TV quickly).

No power strips on the TV, there are the 2 used peritel sockets + the front socket

The phenomenon with the TV when I turn it on is that it seems to go into standby for a few weeks
Even if I normally turn off the TV, when I turn it back on, it seems to go into standby even though it’s not actually in standby
I have to press 1 or some other button for an image to appear

And for the half-black screen issue
It doesn't happen all the time
I just watched the TV for an hour and it was normal, I didn't have that problem

Whether I watch TV via satellite, a movie (VCR), or if I play on the Wii
This problem comes out of the blue

P.S. "For the image when you turn on your TV it's normal, you need to select the input signal" I didn't have this problem before, even if I didn't turn on the decoder, the TV would automatically go to channel 1 (blue screen like the decoder is off)

P.S.S. horizontal sweep failure (can the TV explode?)

Without seeing the image, it’s difficult to diagnose the scanning issue. The symptom is unmistakable, the image shrinks in width. When I say the image, I mean the illumination of the screen, not the content. Is the tube black in some areas? That is to say, no light at all? If a bright vertical line forms in the middle of the screen while the rest is black, then it’s indeed a scanning failure and you must turn off the TV immediately (risk of damaging the sensitive internal surface of the tube due to the brightness, not to mention the destruction of expensive components like the flyback transformer or the deflector; in short, it can be costly, but it won't explode or catch fire!
I believe your problem lies elsewhere. Is there a bottleneck at the level of the devices connected to your TV via multiple SCARTs, for example? Someone clearer than me has already replied to you in this post. It’s better, even if it’s tedious, to connect one device at a time to each SCART socket (two or three depending on the devices, and that’s already good), then you need to "switch everything" with the remote control AV1, AV2, etc. You also need to configure devices like the Wii to connect to the TV via RGB (which is very good quality). Each device sends information to the TV, which then doesn’t know where to direct the signal; there's a saturation of signals and it can no longer sort the sources. So, I believe that’s where your problem comes from. Pay close attention to which device is the troublemaker; that is, when you turn on the Wii, for example, and it starts to malfunction, look closely.

the TV is "dead"
there's no point in getting it repaired at a shop
just the estimate is €50
I asked a "repairman" who is retired, he said it's not worth it, especially since my TV is quite old (about 9-10 years) he doesn't recommend it, he said it's a "thing" (I can't remember the name but it's a whole set) that needs to be replaced

You reacted well, your TV is old, repairing it will be expensive and it won't make it new. In two or three years, you'll need to replace it to keep up with the channels that will all be digital. There are many reasons not to throw money out the window. Good luck and if you can, break open your piggy bank.
