Burnt hard drive... recover data Solved

Question

Good evening

I reversed the polarity when connecting my external hard drive... it smoked... this leads me to 2 questions:

1) Is it repairable?

If not

2) How can I recover the information at the lowest cost?

I must, out of respect for the community, inform you that the hard drive has been repaired... actually, the little "thing" was just a power diode.

Once replaced, the disk works as before.

If it "burned out" as you say, meaning sparks and smoke or even fire, I really doubt it.
Is it guaranteed? How did you do your calculation?

In my life, I've dismantled and installed hundreds and hundreds of hard drives, and the only time I burned one out was by placing it on an unstable surface where one part touched another and caused it to burn out!

Unless, possibly, you send the hard drive back to the manufacturer and they try to recover data from a burnt hard drive, there isn't much hope, and even then. Keep in mind that often, data recovery like this costs between 100 and 800 euros depending on the difficulty and amount of data, but usually, the price is around 400 euros. Is it that important to try to recover it at that price? Knowing that even if it may be recoverable, it's not guaranteed that it will ultimately be usable.

The external hard drive connects with a power supply with a plug O - and -- +;
while I connected a power supply O + and -- minus. It's silly and stupid of me...

Hi SudFrance, with a bit of luck, you can fix your hard drive by replacing the controller board with that of an identical hard drive that you can find second-hand. It's not guaranteed 100%, it depends on the extent of the damage caused by the short circuit.

Thank you FranceSud for this information... Your problem is just like mine... I'm going to try to see what spare part I can find. There's no way I'm reading anything on the component: it's really small and completely burnt. I took a photo of it at 12 Megapixels with a macro lens, and I can't see anything written on it.

I'm going to try to find a replacement part (diode or others), because I'm sure that if I manage to change it, the disk will work again.

One thing is certain: the disks operate on 5V and not 12V!

Well, my problem is solved... I found a BD 433 transistor at O10C for 45 cents, I figured out the polarity of the diode, I removed the diode, and I made a first solder of the transistor...

... The wrong way around...

I unsoldered it, and while resoldering it the other way, the solder ended up rolling and mixing into the connectors on the board.

So now it's dead! I'm giving up: I had a backup of the disk. I would have liked to recover it, but oh well.

I'm going to look for a new, larger disk!

In any case, the fault is well identified. The other solution would be to find an identical integrated circuit on a dead disk. This one is very easy to disassemble/assemble.

For information for those who wish to buy an external HDD power supply at www.webducommerce.com: after several email exchanges with them, they consider their power supplies to be standard! Standard of who? From which country? I don't know: I compared with 3 power supplies from 3 external hard drives from 3 different brands, and none are wired like the power supplies sold by this site... So be careful!

As for the return conditions, they do not offer refunds, but a credit valid for 2 months for a purchase on their site... I was already a bit put off at the time of ordering, as I noticed when paying that the prices on their site are displayed without tax (which is not mentioned)!

In short! Given the conditions and shipping fees, I think I will keep this power supply that I will open one of these days to reverse the 5 and 12 volts and thus make their "standard" power supply "non-standard".

Hello, I have a Windows XP where the cables inside disconnect by themselves (impressive, soon they'll learn to jump lol)
And I unplugged them, the first one was perfect, I managed to reactivate the fan, then the other 2 cables got messed up and when I plug them in, bzzt, smoke, it stinks and I was wondering if the hard drive is not affected because the short circuit is 10 cm from the hard drive and I need reassurance because what it contains is ULTRA IMPORTANT!!!!!
