Hi,

I’m looking for good period films like Little Women, Sense and Sensibility, but avoiding French films. I prefer the atmosphere of American or English movies, if possible, set between the 1800s and 1900s. Can you help me?!

The BBC films of Jane Austen are great!
Victoria, the young years of a queen, Much Ado About Nothing, Cold Mountain, Gone with the Wind, The Count of Monte Cristo, Gigi, Australia, Giant, Pearl Harbor...
More period pieces: Lancelot, King Arthur, Marie Antoinette, The Duchess, Two Sisters for a King, Elizabeth 1 and 2...
    There are many!

Ever After (Cinderella) and Pride and Prejudice (with Keira Knightley) are my two favorite films!

I recently saw Jane Eyre. I thought it was a very beautiful love story. There are 2 versions... I saw the one with Judi Dench and Michael Fassbender, the other being with Charlotte Gainsbourg I believe.
Oh yes! Firelight with Sophie Marceau... English or American film, I’m not sure, but really very beautiful.

There are tons of period films, especially American and English ones, of good quality.

Come check out our blog if you love this genre (we're fans!): http://filmsencostumes.blogspot.fr/

    Many adaptations of English literature:
    C. Dickens, Thomas Hardy
I love almost all of Jane Austen's works =) and many have been released on DVD in France: Pride and Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility (great with Hattie Morahan), Persuasion (excellent with Sally Hawkins), Northanger Abbey (I loved it, with Felicity Jones)
    E. Gaskell: North & South (sublime), Cranford (excellent, great casting), Wives and Daughters

Easy Virtue (brilliant comedy), Young Victoria, The Tudors (TV), Rome (TV), Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett), Girl with a Pearl Earring, Little Women (I love it with Susan Sarandon), Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (good comedy)..............

Look, "Pride and Prejudice" and "Moulin Rouge" are the only ones I know, and I also love period films, but there aren't many, at least to my knowledge!!
Oh yes, there's also "Tristan and Isolde" and "Shakespeare in Love."

I loved "Amour interdit" (The Sleeping Dictionary) with Jessica Alba; the story takes place in 1936 during the colonial period. It's a very moving and, of course, romantic story, but I find it has a very good content, and I have some great memories of it.

There aren't a lot of period films, but there are tons and tons of series. Unfortunately, they are not necessarily in French.

So here's a list of series: && there are also many that are Italian. && Some are mini-series of 2 or 3 episodes.
    Elisa Di Rivombrosa
La Figlia Di Elisa [Sequel to Elisa Di Rivombrosa]
    Lorna Doone
    Tess Of the d'Uberville.
    Cartouche, the magnificent brigand
    Il Falco e la Colomba
    Rossella
    Terra Ribelle
    Tierra de Lobos
Daniel Deronda [which I am currently subtitling]

If you have any questions about these series, feel free to ask.
You can find some of them here:

"Anna Karenina" with Catherine McCormack and Rufus Sewell
The story takes place in 16th century Venice, so beautiful costumes and stunning sets!
A love story of course ^^
    One of my favorites!
