[OpenOffice / Writer] special characters

Hello,

In the Writer software (the equivalent of Word) of the OpenOffice suite, I'm looking for how to assign special characters to certain keyboard keys. I used this function a lot in Word.
For example, to type Spanish accented characters, I assigned:
- the character 'i with accent' to the key combination Ctrl+Alt+i
- the character 'o with accent' to the key combination Ctrl+Alt+o
etc

In Word, you just go to the 'Insert/Special Characters' menu and select 'Shortcut Key' to achieve what I want to do.

However, I haven't found this 'Shortcut Key' functionality in Open Office Writer. It seems impossible to choose the desired key combination to obtain a given special character.

Can anyone confirm this for me?

Otherwise, apart from this need, I find Open Office superior to Microsoft Office.
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.0.1 OpenOffice 2.4.1

Hello,

you can do it like this:

Tools > macro > record a macro > you put in the text placeholder, for example, á

and you click on the small window that opened before > close the recording and you give a name to this macro, for example, a_
The macro is created, now you need to assign a key (or shortcut) to it

So, Tools > Customize > In categories (at the bottom right) you look for "macros open office.org," you click, then (at least in my case) you go User > Standard > Module1 and there, on the left, you have all the macros you created.
Above, you have keyboard shortcuts, click on your macro and then click on a keyboard shortcut, this way we will assign a macro to a shortcut, in my case, I did it like this:

CTRL+A = á
CTRL+I = í
CTRL+O = ó
CTRL+U = ú

I hope you will be able to do it, if not, feel free to reply.

Thank you.
Alejandro.

Hi! First of all, thank you for the explanations, it's nice to help new users...
I have a problem, I've followed all the steps you explain, but in the end I can't find how to assign a keyboard shortcut to the macro I created. In the list of macros, even if I select one it doesn't work and besides, I would prefer to choose the macro that suits me best...
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi!
First, thank you for these tips, as the help from Ooo is really not clear regarding macros.
I've followed all your advice, but at the last step, I have a big issue: in the list of keyboard shortcuts, there's no ctrl + anything... and moreover, if I try to assign my new macros to old keyboard shortcuts, it doesn't work.
Is there a way to create new keyboard shortcuts myself? (PS: I'm using Ooo 3)
Thanks in advance for your help!
