Hi,

I discovered Dr. Who in 2007; completely by chance while channel surfing on France 4 after getting digital TV.
I fell off my chair watching the two-part episode titled "The Devil's Planet" and I’m a fan of the series today.

It is certainly the best current fantasy series; the wildest and most imaginative since "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." (Oh, I can feel that I'm touching on another sensitive topic here).

So, obviously, we are light-years away (ha, ha) from rigorous, hard science; the stories are often far-fetched or even flimsy, but it's so carefree, well-made, and fully embraced that it's simply delightful. Add to that a beautiful soundtrack and those are moments of pure happiness and utter madness.

I'm more of a fan of "dramatic" sci-fi, but every episode of Dr. Who brings me back to my inner child, and I often still find myself falling off my chair in front of such furious insanity...

And I am indeed furious to see the poor quality of the existing DVD box sets (thanks, France 4 editions!) and the absence of the special episodes that are regularly alluded to in the series.

A simple comparison can be made with the "Torchwood" DVD box sets - an excellent spin-off of Dr. Who (much less politically correct) - which are much more comprehensive although significantly more expensive.

Meda31, I must be completely stupid, since Stargate ended, which was the only series I watched and which was starting to please me less, I've had the joy of finding one like Doctor Who in front of all the money-grabbing crap that airs on TV and can't function without a sex scene and super sexy women, etc... I find this series simple and more respectful of its audience. As for saying it's the worst, honestly Baywatch, Melrose Place (where everyone is beautiful), and others are definitely more stupid than that one!

I stumbled upon this series entirely by chance. At first, I was unsure, but I watched some more and realized that I had become completely hooked!!! I don't know the other "Doctors," but I find David Tennant particularly charming! It's a shame he's leaving the series.

It is perfectly legal to have items delivered from the United Kingdom, however the boxes are only in VO. Nevertheless, they are full of bonuses and all the special episodes are included. Alright, DVDs exist... but in the original version. And for those who don’t have the level, there are reality TV shows left?
More seriously, does the entirety of seasons 1, 2, 3, 4 (and without wanting to be greedy) 5 exist in VOSTF, or even in VF, and where can we get them?

I ultimately invested in the English DVDs, they are indeed in their original version but contain English subtitles (which is enough for me).
There are indeed VF box sets published by France 4. The problem is that starting from season 3, goodbye VOSTF, "well yes, it's too expensive for the show's little success". Hmm. Another point, none of the special episodes (those bridging the seasons at Christmas), no bonuses either are present in this edition. In short, a shoddy job, but if you are really resistant to the original version, I fear you won't have much choice :x
(Uh, by the way, for the season 5 you are asking about, it hasn't even been filmed yet =D )

Finally, you can find the French editions at pretty much any DVD retailer, I saw them on Amazon on my side. I bought the English editions directly from the BBC's website.

And yes, the Doctor is going to regenerate again; that's the principle that has kept the series going for quite a few years even without its main actor. I really liked the first one, "Christopher Eccleston," when I discovered the series, then I got used to "David Tennant," and now there's another new one.
I think the series relies heavily on the shoulders of the Doctor; if he's bad, everything crumbles, and I hope he'll be up to the task so the series can continue.
The series should become darker with the arrival of the new Doctor, "Matt Smith," who is currently the most hated man in Great Britain; will he be able to turn the tide?

As a fan of fantasy series, I fell under the spell of this show!

I stumbled upon it by chance; it's broadcast on France 4. The character of the doctor is quirky and endearing.
You can't judge a series by watching just one episode or flipping through it quickly, and that's true for any series.
The characters evolve, we discover their universe, their loved ones, in short, pure joy!

I also really like this little unpretentious series which is probably on a reduced budget; the storylines are somewhat elaborate, the actors are quite good, okay the special effects are sometimes pathetic, but it gives a kitschy vibe that goes well with the British humor, and above all it’s a nice change from the endless medical or police series that I can't stand anymore.

For your information, it is the longest-running science fiction series in the world still airing today; indeed, the Doctor has been on television since 1963, with of course different Doctors succeeding one another, the one we know today is none other than the 10th Doctor, just that.

Season 4 starts this week on France 4, I believe on Tuesday with an episode featuring Kylie Minogue,

so get on board the TARDIS and let’s go!!!

Of course this series is excellent... completely offbeat, very British humor, and delightfully kitsch. It reminds me of certain episodes of "The Avengers," that series was just as psychedelic as the Doctor is.
I really have a great time every time I watch it.

I need to watch this series "Torchwood". I've seen a few episodes, and I was delighted to see "Spike" from Buffy. The series is a bit more formal than "Doctor Who", which makes it lose some of its charm, but I’ll start watching it anyway; I have to begin with episode 1.
For your information, "Torchwood" is an anagram of "Doctor Who".

Dear MAO, I would say that Torchwood is certainly more adult and less "family-friendly" than Dr Who, but in no way "stuffy."

I don't want to tell you more, so as not to spoil your enjoyment of discovering this excellent "complementary" series to Dr Who, but if you appreciated the "spiciness" of the situations, attitudes, and relationships between the characters in Buffy, you will certainly find that Torchwood hits the nail on the head in that regard.
(those who already know know what I'm talking about...)

For the record, the main character of Torchwood, Captain Jack Harkness, is introduced in the middle of season 1 of Dr Who, during the time of the German Blitz against England.

It is also worth noting that Anthony Head (Giles from Buffy) makes a remarkable appearance in season 2 of Dr Who as a principal who is alien and diabolical (yes, yes, it exists, I have known...)

He also plays the king in Merlin, another excellent BBC series! (in which we find in the lead role a little guy who had a brief appearance in Dr Who, season 4 if I remember correctly)

I just have a comment: how can one claim that this series is good? I quote: "...special episodes of the excellent series Doctor Who..." HONESTLY, Dr Who is one of the worst series I've seen in my life. It's a real flop, and I find it profoundly foolish, maybe that's why the ratings are disastrous in the hexagon. I'm disappointed by such rubbish on our screens. boo Doctor Who.

Whoa, some people could definitely use a little dose of sarcasm!
If you find this series stupid because of its kitschy side, you should know that it's intentional ^^ On the other hand, if you're jumping into the series midway, it's obviously harder to grasp its spirit, but that's true for everything. I actually think it's one of the best current shows, quirky, with subtle humor, and unpretentious as mentioned below. (And without wanting to nitpick, I would be curious to know which series you consider exceptional ;-) )

And, uh, by the way... how did you end up on this post if you don't like Dr. Who? I mean, if it's just to say "I don't like it" when that's not the topic of the thread, it's a bit off-topic ^^

hum... Doctor Who is a kind of institution in England!!! Just the characters => the Daleks, the Master, the Cybermen, or even the TARDIS... make this series CULT!!! (well, in France, as you say, nobody knows it, so....)

The series "does not find an audience in France" because, firstly, no media talks about it! and secondly, the second degree is forgotten (as Zita points out)
Then, David Tennant is a BRILLIANT actor! (awarded several times for this role) (however, it should be noted that the French dubbing is very disappointing!)

In short, Doctor Who is not rubbish, it's "B-movie" and fantastic, so offbeat!!

And if you dive into this series from the beginning, you won't be able to get out (plus this series raises many metaphysical questions!)

(I wanted to point out that France4 broadcasts excellent British series that deserve to be known!)

Honestly, I won't allow you to say something like that! Doctor Who is the best series I've ever seen
and yet I've watched a lot of series and none compare to this one!! And if you came here to criticize, there's really no need to come to these kinds of sites! If you don't appreciate this series, it means you must be really difficult!!
