To unlock the circuits, characters, and vehicles, there are different conditions, but overall, you need to achieve certain performances.

If you are in a 50cc race, to unlock the star, special, leaf, and lightning cups, you must win the 4 other cups that are available.
To unlock star, you need to win mushroom and flower. To unlock special, you need to win star.
To unlock leaf, you need to win the first two of the retro cups (I forgot the names), and to unlock lightning, you need to win leaf.
