How to download songs on GH3

To begin, you need to have GH3 installed (v1.1 or not) in English. If you installed it in French, you will have to uninstall it (or alter the language in regedit to "us"?), but first make a copy of your backups located in My Documents/Aspyr. On the other hand, putting your backups back onto the English installation looks like a real mess, and I’m not going to explain how to do it, for the simple reason that I haven’t looked into it yet.

Once the game is in English, change your regional settings to English US (Control Panel etc...). //not sure if this will be eventually useful.

Then go to the folder Guitar hero III\DATA\PAK, and make a copy of the files qb.pab.xen and qb.pak.xen to avoid reinstalling the whole game if something goes wrong.

Now, the programs to download:

Once you have all the necessary programs, extract GH3 PC editor wherever you want, into a folder we’ll call GH3PCeditor. And in GH3PCeditor put Lame.exe and mp3info.exe.

So you want to be able to play new songs in your GH3.
You will therefore need an audio file. If it’s an mp3, it’s better if it’s 128kbps - 44.4kHz, and not VBR. For my part, I tested with ogg without problems, but it seems you shouldn’t have multi-channel oggs.

The .chart files, just like the MIDI files, contain information about the "notes" of a song. If you have a chart, you’ll first need to convert it to MIDI using Chart2Mid. And if you have a MIDI, it must of course be a GH-compatible MIDI, certainly not one that reproduces the real notes of the song.
You can find chart files @ scorehero, and MIDI @ fretsonfire.net.

Launch songlist_editor.exe from GH3PCeditor now. Click File then Open.
Select the DATA folder of the directory where GH3 is installed and click OK.
A list of all the game’s songs will then appear (a good ~70).

In the bottom left of the window there is the Insert New Song button, to properly add rather than replace GH3 songs with yours. A new window will appear if you click the button. You must have a screen resolution of at least 1024*768 or you won’t see the new window appear.

Give the song a name. This name will be in the list afterward, so in my opinion it’s better not to give a name that already exists like avalancha. Give a name without spaces or special characters like accents, and also make sure it isn’t too long (but it’s probably limited to 18 characters anyway). And don’t worry, it’s just a name to identify your song, not the one displayed in the game. Also follow this rule for the audio and MIDI files to avoid problems.

To the right of Guitar Track click Browse to search for your audio file corresponding to the guitar track. Do the same with Rhythm Track (rhythm guitar or bass) and Song (the rest of the song). You can adjust the volume of each track, and also choose where the audio preview appears when you hover over a song in the game.
Find your MIDI file. And finish filling in the fields.
Then click OK, and your audio file will be converted into a format the game can read.

Your song should now appear in the list. Click it and then on the Edit Setlists button at the bottom of the window.

In the dropdown menu next to Set List: choose Bonus Songs. That is, the song you’re adding will be in the Bonus section. But it’s usually possible to add songs for Career mode.

Then click the up arrow next to Songs per Tier (this corresponds to the number of songs in the Bonus section; the up arrow increases this number).
Since Dragonforce’s song is the 25th and last song in that section, yours will be number 26, in the Song Number list.

For now it will be named slowride. Select it, then just below, in Song, choose the name of your song.

Click OK, then File, and finally Save to save the changes. And OK again to confirm that you will modify game files.

Apparently, since it’s an added song, there’s no way to unlock it (it would have to be in the store, for example). So the only way is to cheat. The green fret 2 times unlocks all songs, including yours.

The maximum number of songs that can be added for now is 105 in Career mode and 105 also in Bonus, so don’t try to add more.

I'm not able to get the songs to work. The game sees the song and loads it, but instead of showing me the guitar to start the tune, it just says "YOU ROCK..." right away.

Can someone tell me why this is happening???

It's because you didn't put the song in the right level.

Most of the songs in chart files on the internet are not playable in Expert mode.

In my opinion you’ll mainly find MIDI songs directly on

http://fretsonfire.wikidot.com/0-9 after a short registration

Heroes you must not have mp3 files but ogg files that are directly on the sites or I have included the links for the songs in the pack and yes you must have 3 files or 2 if the guitar and bass share the same sheet music (often the case) see one if the bass and guitar share the same sheet music and if the guitar plays the whole song (existing but very poorly done)
