Hello,
How to move the files labeled "undeletable"/"unmovable" by Windows XP during defragmentation?

Is it possible to do it with a free tool?

Should I use another machine or another operating system (Linux on a live CD)?

Thank you for replying in detail and, if possible, include hypertext links pointing to pages for an intermediate level.

    Defragmentation in the rules (4 years).

    Because it may be useful to others, the Windows defragmentation non-movable files can be erased during a defragmentation.

    To keep it simple, these files are simply:

    1 _ The Recycle Bin capacity
    2 _ The Hyberfil.sys file (Hibernate)
    3 _ The System Restore files.
    4 _ The Pagefile.sys file (Virtual memory)

    to disable them (On XP - almost the same on other Windows systems):

    Recycle Bin:

    Right-click on the Recycle Bin, Properties, select the drive you want to defragment and move the slider to 0%

    Hyberfil.sys:

    Either by going through Power Management and disabling hibernation, or by typing Start/Run, and entering the following command (without the quotes) "cmd /k powercfg /H off"

    System Restore:

    System Properties, System Restore, disable System Restore on all drives.

    Pagefile.sys:

    System Properties, Advanced, Performance Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory, click No paging file and click Set (you will be asked to restart, do it)

    Restart in Safe Mode to perform a clean defragmentation, without programs resident that could then not be defragmented (antivirus and others), in the defragmentation interface, you can see that the non-movable files have disappeared.

    After defragmentation, still in Safe Mode, don't forget to re-enable virtual memory, especially for those with not much RAM.

      no, that unlocks a file, it doesn’t move it at the partition level :D

      okay which files are you talking about and why do you talk about them as non-movable files during defragmentation? would these be the swap files and pagesys you mention?

      I don’t know at all what these files are.

      during defragmentation using the utility provided by MS they appear in GREEN on the main partition

      I don’t have an answer to the original question, but I still think it’s stupid that when someone asks "how can I do X?", we reply "why do you want to do X?". What does the reason for wanting to do it have to do with anything? "It’s their choice" (and I’d be surprised if it’s for partitioning a disk with a Linux distribution), but that’s none of my business. The aim of the game is to find the HOW (it works), not the WHY.

    Hello,

    I just saw Arken's technique which apparently works for others. I’m on Vista, do I have to type directly (without the double quotes) "cmd /k powercfg /H off" in the Start menu search bar and then right-click the cmd button that appears with the command to run it with administrator rights? Because when cmd.exe starts I don’t see any confirmation that the command was executed. I never use cmd.exe so I don’t know if that’s normal.
