Omnis 7 for pizzeria

Solved

Hello,

I have a problem with my OMNIS 7 pizzeria software,

It is installed on old PCs running Windows 98 but I would like to upgrade to new PCs running Windows XP.

The problem is that I want to back up my database, as we have been entering customer addresses and everything for 15 years, so starting all over again manually is not an option.

Or if someone knows if it is compatible with XP and if by any chance I could copy/paste the software folder from the old PCs to the new ones...

Any solution would be welcome...

Thank you in advance.

Yann

hop hop hop,

here is the right way to do it in detail:
1- open the DF1 outside the application with a blank library for example
2- install the utilities menu (file menu/item menus/check "utilities menu")
3- in the utilities menu choose 'change menu size'
NB: it's in this window that you can allocate more space to a DF1 up to 512000 blocks or 256 MB
4- Use the add segment button and then choose the directory, normally the system should suggest the same directory as the DF1" to check there are sometimes surprises on that side.

Have a nice day

Hello, and thank you for getting back to me.

I read your explanation,
With the "utilities" menu of the Runtime, I do not have the option to "change the menu size."
However, I managed to perform this manipulation using the "Omnis Studio" tool, so I added a "20 blocks" segment (which is set by default).

I now have in the same directory: fichier.df1 and FICHIER.DF2

However, the application still crashes when I perform new records.

I don't know what to do anymore...

I have a medical software based on Omnis 7 that migrated without any problem to XP, and it runs.
However, I don't know how to increase the size of the database: I would like to create a 4th volume .DF4 since the other 3 .DF1, .DF2, and .DF3 are full. Do you know the method?

Hello,

if I remember correctly, you need to open the Omnis 7 RunTime or the development tool (if you have it), and create your file with the DF4 extension through the "open data file" menu / "new file" button, placing it at the same level as the other DFx files. The system should recognize the file and account for it (in principle)

Be careful, a few precautions are necessary:
- No ongoing usage
- Backup the data at least twice in two different volumes/folders (better safe than sorry...)
- The file name must be the same as the others except for the extension.
- Do not change the folder files

Best regards

I have an Osoft 3 runtime, I took the indicated precautions, but creating an OS_DATA.DF4 results in a small file of 150 KB instead of a volume of 256 MB like the other 3...

Nothing unusual. The file will grow by itself when data is inserted. It is also possible to give it an exact size through the utility menu of Omnis 7 Runtime, file size option, 1 block worth 512 bytes, so for 256 MB you need ... a certain number. Be sure to always back up files before any manipulation. The slightest problem is almost irreparable.

Hello,

That's quite a question you've asked me; I'm sorry but I really don't know anything about that.

I just wanted to know how to retrieve all the data saved by the software.

Thank you for your answer, at least I know it can run on XP.

Hello everyone, would any of you be able to explore the software and extract all the data to a text file?

If not, how to do it?

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

It's not easy to answer. On the intellectual property side !!! Do you have rights to the software?
- If not, nothing can be considered without the publisher's or their rights holders' preliminary agreement.
- If yes, do you think the application's code is accessible from the Omnis 7 tools?

Moreover, could you send me an example of the application? I could then tell you exactly what it's about.

Regards

Hello Buzzer,

Regarding the rights, it's not a GPL licensed software; my friend bought it several years ago, and since then, the company was acquired by another one and dissolved.

So I'm not quite sure what the situation is.

As for your question about the application code, I don't know anything about that.

The problem with the software is that it doesn't have an "export my data" button or anything else, so if we want to recover everything, we have to open each client record and do it all manually (ouch). lol.

It would simply be necessary to export/extract the data (that he entered over the years) into a plain text file where the fields are separated by ;

So that we can retrieve everything using modern software.

I'm super happy to see you trying to help me.

Thanks to all of you,

If anyone knows anything about this, please don't hesitate.

Hello,

Could you send me a copy of the Omnis libraries and an explanation of the application's functions?

I will send you a copy of the files as soon as I have them; I will try to get them by early afternoon.

These are the .DAT files, right?

Otherwise, I will copy the entire folder into program files, but it might be a hassle to send it by email.

However, please try to erase your address from the forum; you never know.

Thanks in advance.

Re,

In fact, the application files have the extension (on PC) usually .APP, .LBR, or .LBS depending on the version of Omnis.
For data, the extension is .DAT or .DF1, .DF2, .DF3, etc.

Sincerely yours,

Jean-Yves

Hello

for your information, the company is not dissolved!!

A proposal has actually been made to all clients to migrate their database to a more recent version

however, it's a paid solution

hence this person's attempt to extract their data using a free solution

good luck then!!

Hello,

I would like to clarify something. The data does not belong to the software publisher but to the user. Therefore, it would be normal to provide users with the means to export their data in a standard format without infringing on the intellectual property rights of the publisher.

Just to clarify the situation

Best regards

Jean-Yves

Hello, I just got hired at a company and some people are using an application developed under Omnis 7 with a .df1 database.

One of these databases has reached the maximum size of 256MB.

As mentioned in previous posts, I created a .df2 file which is a segment of the .df1. This creation is functional since I cannot open the .df1 if the .df2 is not in the same directory.

The problem is that when I try to save an item to my database, the application crashes... This didn't happen when the .df1 file was smaller than 256MB.

I have the impression that the .df2 is not being taken into account.

Does anyone have an idea?

Good evening,

Actually, DF1 records the link with DF2 (and so on) within itself. So if you want to do things right, and that might be your problem, you first need to open DF1 via the "open data file" menu, then once that's done, create the DF2 file, then close Omnis and see if it works. But be careful, make a backup first, or even two, don't use your DF2 that has a problem.

Have a good evening.

Once I have opened my DF1, when I want to create the new file in .DF2, the application only offers me to create DF1 files, so I end up with a "file.DF2.DF1".

Should I keep this extension (which doesn't seem logical to me ^^) or should I change the extension to .DF2 (which is not recognized by the system)?

Hello,

Do you have the possibility to upload your DF1 (ZIPPED) to my FTP server without the library?
Address: site.alterinfo.fr
Ports: standard ftp (20&21)
Username: segment
Password: segment
Folder: segment

I will check if there is a possibility during the day.

Best regards

Unfortunately, I cannot from a confidentiality standpoint.

Is there an action to take when using the DF1 associated with DF2 for the first time in the Runtime?

buzzer Posted messages 9 Status Membre 1

No, nothing in particular. The only thing is to create as I did previously and use the add segment for the DF2. The link is saved in the DF1.

Is it possible to reduce the size of DF1? By purging the data, for example?

Re,

Difficult but not impossible. You need to export the data via the utility menu in Omnis format, it's the safest option, and then re-import the data. There are several precautions to take, especially regarding file connections.

But I think you have a major issue with DF1, which seems to be crashing badly. If that's the case, you'll have problems exporting the data. The simplest solution would be to check if there is a DF1 in the backups that doesn't crash, and from there, resume the steps for creating DF2.

Good luck.

Finally, we retrieved a backup, cleaned it up, and for now, it's working again.
We'll see how it goes over time!!!

In any case, thank you for your help!

I am facing the same problem as you. The df1 database is full.

I open it via the 'file>'open a data file'. Then I go back to 'file>'open a data file'>'new' and there I can only create a .df1 file.

What should I do to add a segment to my initial df1 database?

Thank you in advance for your help.

The application works very well on XP; I have been using it for over 15 years and we are on XP. You save the entire omnis directory on CD and place it in an omis7 directory on your new XP setup. Your database is xxxx.DF1, your application is XXX.LBR, that's all...

If you are unable to export or if you don't have the option, I found this site and tested their services! And... it works! They can export any OMNIS database and Omnis Studio even if you don't have the schema or if the database is protected. As a reminder, these are DF1, DF2 files...

It's explained at this address:
