Hello,

The "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" starts when I turn on the computer even though it is set to "Manual".

As a consequence, wmpnetwk.exe appears and uses 99% of the CPU. The computer becomes unusable.

Why?

Thank you!Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

I would like to add my humble contribution :
If you notice that the process "wmpnetwk.exe" is consuming part of your CPU load (from 30 to 100% apparently) and/or that your PC is lagging :
It's the same thing as seboss53, who pointed me in the right direction with a few details.
I am on Windows 7 x64.
  • Start -> Run ->
    services.msc
  • Look for the service "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" (a pain to find) (-> the "service name" is "WMPNetworkSvc" in the details afterwards)
  • Double-click on it and set the "Startup type" to "Disabled"
  • Then click on the "Stop" button
  • If a message tells you that it failed to stop the process (my case), press ctrl + alt + delete, go to the Performance tab then Resource Monitor button, then the "CPU" tab, select "wmpnetwk.exe", right-click and stop the process.

At this point, your CPU load should (finally) drop to zero and stay there.

You will also need to do the same with "wmplayer.exe", which is the Windows Media Player itself when it opens. But it only consumes as long as the player is open.

It may indeed be because the player's search is stuck on a song it can't play... In any case, it still feels like well-optimized software from Microsoft.
