Bonjour,
I am stepping in for the person responsible for updating a website at the last minute. I know the website address http://www.website-name, the login, and the password. I also know that she made the modifications online and that no software (neither a page editor nor a transfer software) is installed for this on her computer.
How do I log in?
I accessed the FTP by entering ftp://www.website-name of the site and then providing the login and password; but I only see a list of files and I don’t know how to proceed.
What should I do?
What address should I type to access the pages and modify them online?
Thank you for a clear response as I am a novice in this area.
Thank you and see you soon.

The best thing is to ask your host. Normally, there should be icons to click to delete, modify... the file.
Okay, goodbye.-
Hello,
The site has been done for a long time, the company that created it is not the one hosting it and the hosting contract only includes the hosting.
Therefore, it's up to us to perform the update.
I would appreciate any advice on the format of the address to enter in my browser to log in as an admin.
Thank you.

Hello,
You need to download the files you want to modify, edit the files locally (once they are on your computer), then save the changes and upload them back to the server once the modifications are done. Make sure you don't mix up the directory when re-uploading the modified files, otherwise nothing will happen when displaying the site. -
So I see two possibilities:
- Either there was an admin area on the site. In that case, you need to know the address of that area. Apparently you have access to all the files of your site, so if you see a folder called "admin" or something like that, then that must be it.
- Or you manage your site yourself by modifying the files and uploading them to your site's server via FTP. Apparently, you have access to FTP: what software are you using?
ftp: Your file list is the files that make up your site. With FTP, you can modify these files and therefore your site. To do this, you actually need to have two file lists: the first is the list of files on the server hosting your site, and the second is a sort of explorer, which is actually your hard drive, your local files. The idea is to choose a file from your second list to upload it, meaning to place it in the first list.
File hierarchy: when you open your FTP access to your server, you normally arrive at the "root" of your site, meaning you cannot go higher in the folder hierarchy. At this point (the root), you should find a file called index (.html or .php or .htm, at least something with a point). This index is the first page of your site. So you should start there if you want to understand how your site works.
I'll stop here, not too much information at once.
To help us understand your situation better, what do you know about the subject: languages (html, php, css ...), SEO... How much of a novice are you?
Give us the address of the site, if it's online of course. That will help us.
Good luck to you.-
Thank you, Mr. White, for your response.
I have already created websites on my computer; I transferred them to the hosting site using a transfer software.
In the case of my question, it's not about creating or modifying files on my computer to transfer them afterward, but rather to connect to the server and then open the files to modify them.
When I connect via FTP, I am in the root of the FTP and I have the list of the site's files; but when I want to open them, they open in the browser, and I don't have the option to modify them. I suppose I need to obtain the administrator address, or is there a trick?
Thank you.
P.S.: I am not entirely new to this, but I have never encountered this situation and I don't know how to proceed.
