If you had looked in the right column for the word Thumbs.db and followed the links,
you would have arrived at the first one on the page:
https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/617-windows-xp-fichiers-thumbs-db-et-vignettes
You would have thus avoided dozens of messages as absurd as the others.
Before asking a question, first do some research (help yourself, and heaven will help you!)
Happy reading.

Start / Control Panel / Folder Options / and in the window that opens click on "View" at the top. Then find the line "Always show icons, never thumbnails" and check it. All you have to do is click on "Apply" and then on "OK."

How to stop having thumbnail previews in "My Pictures":
Under XP:
1- Go to My Computer
2- In the top bar of the screen, click on "Tools"
3- Click on Folder Options, tab: View.
Check: "Do not show hidden files and folders"
There you go, that's it!

Hello, I have the same problem,

I had photos on a USB stick.
When I plugged in the stick, an anti-malware sent some files to quarantine. I think those are the thumbs files that were deleted.

When I try to open a folder containing photos, I get the following message:

"filename.scr invalid image"
"the application or DLL G:/Thumbs.db is not a valid Windows image. Check with your installation disk"

What should I do to access my photos?

Thank you for your help.

Hello,

to delete those infamous thumbs.db files, a good method is mentioned here:
http://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/617-windows-xp-fichiers-thumbs-db-et-vignettes

I implemented it on my PCs, it works except for one where those files were corrupted. No way to delete them, rename them, or move them, CHKDSK incompetent on this issue.
I ended up deleting them by making a disk backup while excluding those files (I used ACRONIS, but I think another tool - GHOST or CLONEZILLA - can do the job), reformatting the disk and rewriting the saved image. No more corrupted files, and a significantly more efficient PC.

For those who have Windows and Thumbs that won't delete, here's something that might work:
- for those who know absolutely nothing: restart, and try again right after the restart, it should work (but hey, you've already displayed hidden files, that's something);
- for those who know at least a little bit more: close explorer.exe and restart it if it doesn't do so on its own, that should work (using Task Manager in "Processes > End..." and then in "Applications > New task", that's the easiest).

(I think it's explorer that uses them to display thumbnails and sometimes it struggles to release them, even though they're no longer needed for you.)

Hi,
It's probably due to ACDSee creating this file..
I'd even say it's certain....

Hello Ben,

No, it's not ACDSee that generates the small Thumbs.db files.

It's XP that's responsible for it.

For proof (Open a folder that already contains a Thumbs.db file):
- In your explorer, when you view the contents of your folder(s) in details, list, icons, or tiles, there is no Thumbs.db file, and it is not created.
- In your explorer, when you view the contents of your folder(s) in filmstrip and thumbnails, the file is automatically created by XP without you clicking on any of your images.
- Switch back to folder view mode: in details, list, icons, or tiles.

Now delete the Thumbs.db file(s).

Have fun with ACDSee, explore your disk, and go back to your folder containing your images or photos: No Thumbs.db file!

Now display the contents of the folder(s) in filmstrip or thumbnails. --> There’s your Thumbs file back again.

In short, it's XP that generates it for its database.
