Hello,
For some time now, a file named thumbs.db has appeared in my images folder. When I try to open it, nothing happens.
Can I delete it?
Thank you all.

Hello everyone,

While reading some posts, I'm pulling my hair out.
You really read everything and anything on the web. Dangerous thumbs files, sensitive files....
These are just previews stored in a database to speed up the processing of directories for display...
Do a little research, here is an article that addresses this issue:

Just prevent their creation by exploring in Control Panel/folder options/view/check do not cache thumbnails... and there you go!!!

I have photos that, when transferred from Vista to an external hard drive, or when I put them back into Vista, turned into "thumb" thumbnails. How can I recover my photos in their original format?

Hi, you're on XP, right? It's XP that creates it in all the folders with images or previews even, I think, if you go to Explorer, and go to options you can change that...

like this too ;o)

.   .  Well! If I'm prevented from working
\_/  I won't struggle!

To get rid of the thumbs files, there is a tool on the website pierre torris.com that deletes them.

Is this utility effective??

You can delete files directly using Windows Explorer:

"Search" - "Thumbs.db" - Ctrl+A - Delete - Confirm

Done, that's it! :-D :-D

Hi everyone, I don't have XP, I have 2000 Pro and this thumbs.db is annoying me. I never installed it, and whenever I run a scan, like I did with Kaspersky Internet Scanner, it slows down every time it hits a thumbs file. Did this appear in one of the latest Windows updates???
For those who are afraid to delete them, I can tell you that even if you delete them, they come back on their own in the files, and even if I delete them with Unlocker, they come back, and Unlocker tells me that the Thumbs files are currently being used by a program: "explorer.exe". Finding this program and trying to delete it = impossible. I think it's more like a virus rather than an extra tool, this "Thumbs".

You just need to disable image caching in Windows Explorer. To do this:

Open Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options

Tab "View" > check "Always show icons, never thumbnails".

After that, the files should have disappeared.

skabandra,

for your problem, it's very simple;

you go to a folder (any folder) and at the top you click on Tools > Folder Options > View, then you click on the box "Show hidden files and folders." there you go, it's that simple, and to do the opposite, you go to the same place, and you click on "Do not show hidden files and folders." there you go ^^.

On the other hand, as far as I'm concerned, I have the same problem as thalie35; "Unable to delete thumbs.db: This resource is being used by another resource or program. Close the programs that might be using the file and try again."

And I also have empty folders that I cannot delete!!! It's very annoying because I am formatting my PC, so I'm tidying up ^^, but in the Media, it doesn't format, so impossible to delete it while formatting -_-". can you help me please???

Thank you in advance for your response and @+

I don't understand why, after I burned some photos, certain photos ended up in a THUMBS directory. Thank you for letting me know if it is possible to open this file to view the photos and possibly develop them. Thank you.

For the thumbnails, is there a consequence in the copying to CD..

For example, I wanted to back up photos on CD, I copied them from folder to folder.
But while my photo folder contained 1974 images on my hard drive, I found that only 1885 were burned onto the CDrom..........!
And there is still space left on the CD.
Are the thumbnails listed as files on the disk and not copied to the CD?

Thank you
Jan

PS: You might tell me that I could just count to see which files are missing, but my files are named and spread across 94 folders..... it would take me hours.......

I believe that the thumbs are the files used to launch the thumbnails in the directories where there are some

It's near the wall that one...

Hi

I have a problem with these thumbs files. When I move files, especially to my second hard drive, using Windows Explorer (but I still have ACDSee), a tiny Norton window opens telling me: Windows Explorer is waiting for the antivirus scan of thumbs.db
The problem is that Norton's help indicates that the operations of the concerned program are halted during the scan, and that the scan starts every 5 seconds...
So, apparently, it significantly slows down the operation.
Do you have a solution to make the antivirus stop this scan (other than clicking stop, since I would have to do it every 10 seconds)

Thanks

Hello,

I'm okay with this point of view.

Indeed, it's not ACD-SsEE that generates this file, but I have the following question: "Why does XP create this file? For what purpose?"

"unable to read from the source file or diskette"

so basically I had 900 of these things!

you do: "start" + "search" + "all files or folders" + "Thumbs.db"

After when you have "unable to read from the source file or diskette" it's because you selected everything!

The solution is not to select everything! In batches of 20 or 30 taken at random, and it works!

Select "details view" and normally in the left column "name" you hover your mouse while holding the left button down, and you simply send it to the recycle bin.

I deleted 900 Thumbs.db like that in 5 minutes.

For the last ones that don't want to be deleted in batches of 10 or 20, then you do it one by one, and it works.

Also think about following the other tips to disable "the generation" of these Thumbs.db files!

For webmasters delete these files from your hosting space and you'll free up space...

Hello,

I'm the same, I have a thumbs.db that I can't delete. It's alone in a folder and impossible to remove it. I tried pasting a file with the same name and then replacing it to delete it, but it doesn't work for the thumbs.

Hello everyone,
I'd like to create a thumbs file!!! I want my photos to enlarge when clicked on. I've been given a PHP code to insert into the "photos" file and into the "thumbs" file. I need to save my photos in both files in different sizes, but here’s the thing: how do I create the thumbs file??? However, when I transfer my photos to my site, I see that a thumbs file is transferred but it doesn't show up in the list. I'm a NOVICE and don't understand anything about technical terms.
Thank you!

Hello everyone,

I would like to delete empty folders, but every time I try, this message appears: "Unable to delete thumbs.db: This resource is being used by another resource or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."

Meanwhile, several empty folders are scattered around my computer. I hope someone can help me.

Thank you.

Hello, you must not delete the file "Thumbs.db" at all; this file is a system file, and if you delete it, your computer may not work properly anymore.

If you have deleted it, you need to reinstall your computer using a CD.
