Hello, I simply called Orange customer service and asked them to deactivate the edge, and they did it immediately, but the change takes effect within 48 hours, or at least that's what they told me lol. So to deactivate it, call 3972 and it works perfectly. In any case, it still hasn't changed for me, but it might take effect in a little while lol. I hope this answers your question.

I think it's normal if you live in a small village because there's no 3G, but if you live in Lyon, Paris, Marseille, Lille, etc., you should normally have 3G.

Apart from listening to Deezer all day via WiFi, I didn't browse at all... unless edge takes over when the iPhone goes to sleep (although I think I would have noticed Deezer on edge!)
Request for technical service number and call
technician's response:
"I confirm you were on edge, that this feature is chargeable, and that you cannot disable it with your iPhone."

Now all that's left is to wait for the next firmware to see if Apple has considered a way to disable Edge

Satisfied with the response but not with the cost, my account has been credited. A nice commercial gesture that I acknowledge here.
However, I will inquire about disabling edge from my subscription.

Same here, my jailbroken iPhone 3G with firmware 3 and unlocked with Boospreff allows me to disable Edge, but the E reappears and I have data charges on my bill!!!

Personally, I downloaded the BossPerf app (thanks, victor4053) and the E for EDGE is always displayed, but I can’t surf anymore, so it works very well. I had an overbilling issue due to a plan change (€75 instead of €20) and I noticed that even on Wi-Fi there was still a charge. I’m going to test on Wi-Fi with EDGE turned off to see if they still charge.

crazybikers I have exactly the same problem as you. I disabled Edge and 3G using Bossprefs (I’m on 3.0.1) and earlier I was about to send a text message and bam, my plan is gone even though I only surfed on WiFi with EDGE and 3G disabled. So I look at my Orange bill and apparently these are multimedia connections. I really don't know what to do anymore.
