Hello everyone!
I have a big problem with my Packard Bell EasyNote H5530 laptop.

When I start it, I have the choice between F2 and F8, that is, between the BIOS and the "Boot Device priority."

(I have the impression of hearing a little beep beep beep beep beep.. is it the motherboard trying to tell me there's a problem?)

I don't have to do anything, it sends me to an American Megatrends page that concludes with primary master hard disk error press F1 to Resume.

Of course, when I press F1 the computer restarts and the vicious circle begins again :( I don't have a boot disk or floppy disk.

I should specify that this happened overnight. I haven't touched anything inside the computer... I haven't tried to install a new component and the computer hasn't received any shock. I removed and reinserted the hard drive to see if it had become disconnected, but that doesn't change anything...

Apparently it's a problem with my hard drive, isn't it? How can I find out what the source of the problem is?
Do you need information to help?

See you.

John

Hello, my Acer computer is doing exactly the same thing; a message appears starting with: initializing usb controllers...done...etc. It talks about my generic USB...etc. However, I managed to turn it back on 3 times. First, I removed the cache, then I cleaned the fan, and yesterday a friend cleaned the motherboard, but this morning nothing works. If someone has an answer to provide, that would be great, thanks in advance.

For your information, if it helps, I had the same problem where it crashed after booting Windows before entering the password, the main drive was not recognized.
I restarted with an image from the backup and everything works again. I had to restore everything, but well, the PC is working.

There's something unusual that I hadn't noticed: Primary IDE Master: Not Detected, which means it considers that there is no HDD since an OS HDD is necessarily Primary IDE Master...
Can you do an auto-detect for the IDE hard drive in the BIOS, maybe in the IDE configuration (or manually force your HDD in this section?)
The solution is not far away... if your HDD is not dead!

P.S. Otherwise, do you have access to the battery to remove it for about ten minutes to reset your BIOS?

Hello!!

So in the BIOS I go to ADVANCED, then to IDE CONFIGURATION and there

-Primary IDE master: Not detected
-Primary IDE slave: Not detected
-Secondary IDE Master: ATAPI CDROM
-Secondary IDE slave: Not detected

ATA(PI) 80Pin CABLE DETECTION [Device]

IDE PIO Pre-Fetch Enable [Enabled]

When I go to primary IDE master there is:

Device: not detected (I can't change that)

Type: Auto
LBA/Large Mode: Auto
Block (Multi-Sector Transfer): Auto
PIO Mode: Auto
DMA Mode: Auto
S.M.A.R.T: Auto
32Bit Data Transfer: Disabled

What should I change? They say to be careful if I'm not experienced.. and I am not ;) thanks anyway for your answers!

You have the choice in ATAPI cable detection?
Otherwise, you can't do anything right now, I know I might be annoying, but could you list each section and each possible choice as you just did? That would help me!
And for the battery? Can you remove it and put it back?

For cable detection, I have the choice between
Host & Device
Host
Device

For the description, there are 6 sections in the BIOS:

1) Main:

OEM BIOS VERSION: 1.06PB
BIOS Build Date: 10/07/04

Processor
Type: Mobile Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz
Speed: 3200 MHz
Count: 1

System Memory
Size: 512 MB

System Time (I can choose the time here)
System Date (I can choose the date)

2) Advanced:

IDE CONFIGURATION (I already told you about this)
Hyper threading function: Enabled

Parallel Port Address: 378
Parallel Port IRQ: IRQ7

3) Security

Supervisor password: not installed
User password: not installed

Change supervisor password
Change User password
Clear User password
Boot sector virus protection: disabled

4) Boot

Quick Boot: Enabled
Quiet Boot: enabled
Touchpad support: enabled
Legacy USB support: enabled

Boot device priority (when I enter it there is:
1st Hard drive
2nd Ps Nec DVD+/-RW ND 6500A
3rd Rem dev
4th Intel UNDI PXE-2.0 (build 082))
Cd/Dvd Drives

5) Power

Intel SpeedStep tech: Automatic
Power Management/APM: enabled
Power Button Mode: On/Off

6) Exit

Save changes and exit
discard changes and exit
load optimal defaults
load failsafe defaults
discard changes

There you go...

No, let's go, boot your PC with the XP CD, it will load its components, then you accept "Install". You will arrive at a blue screen with a line asking if you want to repair (r), you type R, you'll get to a command line like DOS.
You type CHKDSK/p/r
When this operation is finished, you type FIXBOOT, you accept, you let it do its thing and at the end you restart and make sure to set the HDD as FirstBoot instead of the CD that you used to perform this operation with the XP CD... Keep me posted but I think I'm going to FORMAT my bed... Good night... See you later...

So I put the CD in... for now there's a bar that's been advancing for 1 minute... it's halfway and it says loading RAMDISK Image.

djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member 8 > djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member

Well, the bar has finished moving..
it switched to another screen (I barely saw a subliminal image for a thousandth of a second.. I thought I saw ACER RECOVERY SYSTEM (my other computer is an ACER Aspire) Does that change anything?
It asks me to install...
Why are you going to format your bed :D:D:D:D I need you :)

djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member 8 > djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member

So after this subliminal screen, there is a black screen with a white bar underneath that says "please wait..." I waited for 2 or 3 minutes... and now I am on an Acer recovery screen where it asks me to choose the language... I select French and click next... what will happen? :D

Have you checked in the BIOS under "Boot sequence" that the hard disk or the partition containing the OS (XP or VISTA) is set to First Boot?
--
Please kindly do so; sometimes it ends up succeeding...
1
djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member 8

Yes, it is in First Boot.
It hasn't changed.
1. Hard disk
2. my DVD drive
3. Removable Device
4. Intel something I can't remember, but when I boot with this thing (number 4 does nothing)

PS My OS is Windows XP

Another detail in the BIOS it also indicates this ;) : primary IDE master : (not detected)

Anonymous user

You go into the BIOS where you went to check the First Boot, I have a P.BELL theoretically at the top of First Boot you have a line "HARD DISK PRIORITY" you highlight it and press "Enter". If there are 2 lines with numbers and letters then there are 2 partitions, otherwise, one line, one single partition....

djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member 8

There is only one line.. what does it change?
0
Davidoll Posted messages 237 Status Member 14

ok, do 6/ load failsafe defaults, then Save changes and exit, then restart to see!
1
djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member 8

Well now in Primary IDE Master it shows Hard Disk and no longer not detected

But I still get primary master hard disk error displayed...

Do you have 2 partitions on your hard drive (given that it’s a laptop, you obviously don’t have a second hard drive)

One must be willing to finish sometimes... then SUCCEED
0
djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member 8

No, there isn't any partition.
In any case, I've never done one. Is it possible that there was one originally? (When I bought the computer, maybe they partitioned it to install the OS?) How can I check if it is partitioned?

As you say ;) I only have one HDD.. laptop requires it, so no slave, just a master.

If there had been 2 lines, it would have meant that there were 2 partitions and the PC was booting from the wrong one, which is not the case..

However, what intrigues me are the BEEPS that the PC emits; they are alerts that help identify the failure. Listen to them carefully and report them here (short beep or long beep and in what order)... A++

It happens when I am on the Packard Bell page where I can choose between F2 and F8. There are beeping sounds at regular intervals. I press F2 and F8 repeatedly. Nothing happens until suddenly the beeping stops, and then two things happen: either I end up on the American Megatrends page where it says "primary master hard disk error, press F1 to resume," and when I press F1, it takes me to the BIOS or I go directly to the BIOS.
In the BIOS, I have the choice between
Main => where I can set the system's time and date
Advanced => IDE configuration, hyper-threading function, parallel port address, parallel port IRQ
Security
Boot => Quick boot, quiet boot, touchpad support, legacy USB support (all are enabled) and there's boot device priority where I can set the boot priorities and finally CD/DVD drives
Power => Intel SpeedStep tech set to automatic, Power management/APM enabled, power button mode: On/off

and Exit

I really don’t know what to do :(

It is possible that a cluster on your hard drive is damaged and, by unfortunate coincidence, the boot sector of Windows is on that cluster. If that's the case, it could prevent Windows from launching. To boot your computer otherwise, you can try the following: 1. **Boot from a USB drive**: If you have another working computer, you can create a bootable USB drive with Windows installation media. You can use the Windows Media Creation Tool to download Windows and make a bootable USB. 2. **Use recovery options**: If your computer has recovery options built into it, you might be able to access them during startup by pressing a specific key (like F8, F11, or Esc) to enter recovery mode. 3. **Access Safe Mode**: Sometimes, you can boot into Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing the F8 key during startup and selecting Safe Mode from the options. To create a bootable CD, you would need access to another computer with a CD/DVD drive. You can download the Windows ISO file and use a tool like Rufus or Windows USB/DVD Download Tool to burn it to a CD. Regarding hard drive failures, signs of a failing hard drive can include unusual noises (clicking or grinding), frequent crashes, slow performance, or error messages related to disk read/write issues. There are various types of failures that can occur, such as mechanical failure, logical failure, or issues with partitions and file systems. Thank you in advance for your help.

Just in case, try resetting your BIOS settings to default (F5)?

Hello you two, I see that you have made progress in the right direction.

A question for Djolbos (I have a P.BELL and all of this interests me) when you highlight Hard Disk Priority and press "enter," please describe what appears. Thanks.... See you later.

It's funny... (well, not too much but still :)
I just restarted the computer... by pressing F2 directly without waiting for it to ask me and I go straight to the BIOS... and in the BIOS, it says primary IDE master not detected
while when I wait a bit, there are beeps for about ten seconds and then it gives me primary hard disk error and press F1 to resume. I press F1, I go to the BIOS and there in primary IDE master it says not detected again... I don't understand anything :)

for Gounina... I can't find what you're talking about... where is it normally located?

Anonymous user

I just looked at my BIOS, which is a P.BELL, and it is located in the BOOT section right at the top when you highlight First Boot. Check it out,

However, from reading your last post, I fear that the partition table of the HDD might be damaged. If you have the XP CD, let me know, and we can attempt a repair... A+++

I have the installation CD of XP that is installed on the other computer (the one I'm on... but it's not the same one..) does it change anything?
0
djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member 8

Now it says: "restore the system to the factory default configuration" and I have the choice between back, next, and quit.

djolbos Posted messages 268 Status Member 8

lol I don't really want to mess everything up.. there might still be something to save on my HDD, right? I'm going to stop and restart when I have a pro online ;)

So I stopped and he showed me

Acer eRecovery Management

Boot sequence

Load Int 15 Driver Error
ok

I clicked on ok

and then:

Acer eRecovery Management

Recovery

The system will restart
ok

I clicked on ok :)

It restarts and I'm back on the Packard Bell page with F2 and F8 and the beeping, then boom, I'm sent to American Megatrends then PRIMARY MASTER HARD DISK ERROR press F1 to resume

Tralal back to square one :)

But what is this story? Are you sure it's an XP disk you have and not a recovery CD from ACER?
So stop everything, it won't work. You must have an XP CD to repair the system; try to borrow one, otherwise, you're headed straight for formatting and reinstalling your system all clean. If you need to recover data, post here again and I'll tell you how to do it...

No, I haven't set up my bed yet because I had someone on another post and it was urgent for him too...

Well, I don't know :) It says Windows XP on the DVD box and nothing on the DVD... It was a friend of my sister who installed everything :) But it's true that it's Acer :)
Is there a way to recover something then?

P.S. Did you read what I changed in my message just above? I canceled the procedure ;)
Thanks for prioritizing others over your bed ;) You are an exceptionally selfless person :) I probably wouldn't have done the same ;) Probably because I don't know anything :D:D

Apparently this CD is not the XP installation one as it doesn't work when I insert it into my DVD drive on the other ACER BACKUP computer... I will try to get one tomorrow.
Thanks already for your help :)

I brought out my old Easy Note, I reinstalled XP on it because the Master CDs Packard, BOFBOF!
What happens if you press F8 at startup?
Same with F10?

Ps. If you have an external USB case, put a hard drive with an installed XP in it, you boot from it with your laptop or the other way around (laptop hard drive on another PC) and we’ll see what we can do in safe mode, at worst a recovery of your data before reformatting...

F8 and F10 do nothing.. when I'm on the Packard Bell screen there's a choice between F2 and F8.. F2 takes me to the BIOS. Normally F8 should allow me to choose the boot device.. but it goes directly to the BIOS. I need the XP CD.. to do everything you told me ;) I'm looking for it.. if I can't find it I'll ask my girlfriend for hers tonight.. does it make a difference if it's not the same as what's installed on the computer? Like if the installed one is professional and the other one is home?

Thanks for your answers ;)

Hello, I had the problem of the error "primary master hard disk fail" on startup and my solution is:
in the BIOS configure
Primary Master Auto mode LBA
Primary Slave Auto mode LBA
Secondary Master Auto mode LBA
Secondary Slave Auto mode LBA

It's a silly solution but it works.
