Hello,
1) On my MacBook OS X 10.5.2, Swiss French keyboard, I don’t know how to get capital accented letters like À, É, Ê.
2) In the dropdown menus of various applications, the label "Special Characters..." remains unresponsive and does not display the table.
3) Under the keyboard indicator in the toolbar, there is also no option to view special characters.
Who can help me? Thank you

Hi,
Swiss Keyboard (QWERTZ):

Á Alt + Shift + W
á Alt + ^ then A
È Shift + ^ then Shift + E
É Alt + ^ then Shift + E
Ì Shift + ^ then Shift + I
ì Shift + ^ then I
Í Alt + Shift + Z
í Alt + ^ then I
Ò Shift + ^ then Shift + O
ò Shift + ^ then O
Ó Unavailable -> Character Map
ó Alt + ^ then O
Ù Shift + ^ then Shift + U
ù Shift + ^ then u
Ú Alt + Shift + 0 (zero)
ú Alt + ^ then U
Ç Alt + 4
ç Shift + 4
OE Alt + Shift + Q
oe Alt + Q
Æ Alt + Shift + à
æ Alt + à
+ Alt + t
? Alt + v
? Alt + b
« Alt + , (comma)
» Alt + Shift + , (comma)
" Alt + 2
" Alt + Shift + 2
` Alt + ¨ (diaeresis)
' Alt + Shift + ¨ (diaeresis)
-- Alt + - (em dash, for dialogue text for example)
Accents on capital letters are mandatory because their absence can change the meaning of the sentence.
For example:
A MAN KILLS.
A MAN KILLED.

Accents for capitals, yes, for uppercase letters --no matter what modern authors think or say-- no! In a text in all caps, indeed, the presence of the accent matters for the meaning of the text. The uppercase letter, initial capital, does not take an accent, at least that's what I was taught in first grade...
As for your long list, wouldn't it be applicable to PCs running Windows? I'm afraid so... Here, it's a forum dedicated to MacOS... ;-)
Without wanting to reopen the debate on capital letters and accented uppercase letters, let us remind that accentuation is mandatory in printed characters (it does not apply in calligraphy - hence the advice from our teachers in first grade). In the past, it was often neglected for reasons of economy (the characters were made of lead) or the use of Anglo-Saxon equipment. Nowadays, it is often neglected due to a lack of knowledge of typographical rules (and the deplorable adaptation of PC/Windows keyboards to French, it must be said). A good illustration of correct usage (that’s the least one can expect) can be found on the National Printing Office's website, for example. ;)
