Hello,
my daughter damaged the CD of my Dane-Elec multimedia external hard drive So Speaky (500 GB) and the player no longer reads it, it's too scratched. Is there anyone who could give me an idea on how to get it? I sent an email to Dane-Elec support without any response, not very nice. Thank you for your help.

I had this problem with NTFS FAT return and a small FAT32 formatter software saved me (since FNAC was turning a deaf ear and being loud about the return). Today, this same Dane Elec is stuck; when I connect it to the television, I get the message: "alto ==> basso" twice, and after a while, the whole screen turns purple. Needless to say, it's impossible to operate any button on the remote except for the power button (that's already something, we shouldn't lose hope either). Is there a possibility to flash the hard drive via the PC? And if so, with which software? Thanks!
Regarding the Dane Elc customer service, I advise you to call the company directly at their headquarters and explain that you sent a message to customer service and that you are without a response from them.
Having a Dane Elec 500GB hard drive like yours, the response I received regarding the problem following the firmware flashing is that Dane Elec did not foresee a factory return for this model (thanks to the designers for coming up with one-way solutions and crappy upgrade options).
So their response was to contact the retailer where I purchased the drive and to have it exchanged. Honestly, having a customer service for this is quite expensive and it's pretty mediocre.
In conclusion, poor quality drive, outdated design, customer service is unsatisfactory...
I've been searching for information regarding this model across the web for a month now and without hope.

Hi, sorry for coming back almost a year later, but I've encountered the same issue. I had formatted it, and I was told it wasn't in the right format; it was in NTFS format, and the TVs only support FAT32 format. So it needs to be converted to FAT32, and I think I'll install the drivers available here -> http://www.danedigital.com/4-Disques-Durs-externes/5-so-speaky.html
Hello,
I really appreciated your postings.
I have a similar problem but would like to try a different solution:
- restoring from an .iso backup
I did ask the Dan-Elec support but they don’t seem to understand what I’m trying to do.
1. Yes, I did the irreparable because I had a file visibility problem and thought, no problem, I’ll reformat and put all my files back... ...and I didn’t check whether it was FAT or NTFS before reformatting. ...and BAM I put NTFS since I’m on XP
2. After reading a few kilometers of blogs and saying “mea culpa, mea culpa”, I reformatted to FAT32 using FAT32Formatter (some American thing)... and BAM I destroyed the 4 “PAT” of DAN-ELEC (Partition Allocation Tables)
3. I would now like to find someone with a backup of an empty 500 Go So Speaky in .iso format to perform a restoration from this .iso to my disk. But the Dan-Elec support apparently doesn’t understand.
I have been doing IT for 34 years (big machines, IBM, Hitachi) but this time I really messed up :) :) :)
My question:
Do you know if a backup of an empty/virgin 500 Go disk in .iso format would allow me to get back on my feet? Do you have one to share with me?
This file shouldn’t be very large. Can be sent by email.
Isn’t it strange that the CD-ROM doesn’t have a re-init option using an .iso???
After that, for sure, I will take a backup. ????????????
Thank you for your assistance.

Hello,
I'm also looking for the original installation files. Have you received any response from anyone?
I have a similar problem but would like to try a different solution:
- restore from an .iso backup
I have asked the Dan-Elec support but they don't seem to understand what I want to do.
I did the irreparable because I had a file visibility issue and thought, no problem, I'll reformat and put all my files back... ...and I didn't check if it was FAT or NTFS before reformatting. ...and suddenly I used NTFS since I'm on XP
After reading a few miles of blogs and telling myself "mea culpa, mea culpa," I reformatted to FAT32 using FAT32Formatter (something from the USA)... and suddenly I destroyed the 4 "PAT" of DAN-ELEC (Partition Allocation Tables)
I would now like to find someone with a backup of a So Speaky 500 Go, empty, in .iso format so that I can clone it back from this .iso to my disk. But the Dan-Elec support apparently does not understand. If you have a So Speaky 500 Go in working order, could you make a backup in .iso format? I believe Nero does this very well. Others too... :) Thanks in advance.

Especially don't do the update for now with the version that was on the danedigital.com site!
I did this update 2 months ago, it messed up my drive which could no longer read anything from the disk even after formatting.
it only read the USB stick without freezing!
Returned to customer service, received a new one!
Since then, I've been careful not to do an update!!
By the way, danedigital.com realized it, they removed it from their site.
wait and see!

If someone has a solution, I'm interested because I can no longer use my HDD on my TV.

I have drafted a STEP-BY-STEP guide to resolve the issue, which I posted on another thread. Here is the copy:
There, phew!
So, I just fixed my mistake (from NTFS to FAT32) quite easily.
However, I have a big complaint to DANE-ELEC for this "SO SPEAKY" because I find it UNACCEPTABLE that it is not possible to transfer files larger than 4.5 GB since this player has HDMI! So, it's impossible to consider transferring a 1080p movie for example (more than 8 GB!)
I propose a little step-by-step guide for neophytes who have made the mistake of converting their So Speaky to NTFS (a perfectly legitimate error, once again!):
1. Back up the entire hard drive by copying its content to another hard drive (formatting from NTFS to FAT32 will permanently erase all data);
2. To identify the correct firmware for your SO SPEAKY and BEFORE formatting, connect the SO SPEAKY to your TV (the menu should still be accessible even in NTFS). Press the >>| button then the >> on the SO SPEAKY remote (one after the other).
The firmware version will appear at the bottom of your TV screen. If the displayed reference contains the term 64M, you will need to use firmware V3.51_I; if the displayed reference contains the term 128M, you will need to use firmware v3.51_H.
3. Download the correct firmware HERE: http://www.danedigital.com/HDD/so_speaky_fr.html
4. Download "FAT32 Formatter": http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/index.html
5. Start the formatting and wait about an hour for the So Speaky 1TB (for my part the program froze a bit, but it still continued formatting).
6. After formatting, check that the HDD has indeed changed to FAT32 and copy the firmware to the root and follow the next procedure:
6.1 Copy the MP35.ROM file to the So Speaky hard drive via your PC
6.2 Then disconnect your So Speaky from the PC and plug it into the TV
6.3 Go to the file menu by pressing the "enter" button on your remote control.
6.4 The flashing sequence begins automatically
(the operation lasts about 20 seconds, during which one must not turn off the device!).
6.5 The screen goes black, then turn off the So Speaky, and turn it back on (Caution! if by chance you pressed a button and the update resumes, do not turn off your disk! This could damage it. Let the update finish, starting again from step 4; do not forget to delete the MP35.ROM file from your PC!)
6.6 The firmware is installed
WARNING: do not forget to delete the MP35.ROM file from the disk or card after the flashing operation!
7. Transfer the content previously copied back to your freshly formatted FAT32 hard drive
YOUR SO SPEAKY SHOULD NOW BE BACK IN OPERATION!
GOOD LUCK

Hello,
I followed the instructions to set my Dane Elec back to multimedia mode, but it doesn't work. To be honest, when I plug it into the TV, I don't even get a menu; it stays on a blue screen with "no media detected."
My hard drive has been formatted and then partitioned into 2 (one part in WBFS for Wii games that work perfectly and the other in FAT32). But since then, I can't read videos or photos. I plug it in and I don't have access to any menu.

I had this problem with NTFS and FAT returns, and a small FAT32 formatter software saved me (since FNAC was turning a deaf ear and making a fuss about taking it back). Today, this same Dane Elec is stuck when connecting it to the television; I get this message: "alto ==> basso" twice, and after a while, the entire screen turns purple. It's useless to mention that it's impossible to make any button on the remote work except for the power button (that's already something, we shouldn’t lose hope). Is it possible to flash the hard drive using the PC? And if so, with what software? Thanks!
Hello,
I just purchased the So speaky HDMi 1T from Dane Elec and unfortunately I can't use it because the installation CD is damaged and unusable. Can anyone of you send me the software or tell me where I can find it because I couldn't find it on the Dane Elec website. Thanks in advance to everyone.

Theoretically, no installation is required to use these hard drives.
The software provided can easily be replaced by others like Total Commander or Tera Copy.
It is always stated not to format these drives; however, it is possible to reformat to FAT32 and then copy the firmware to the root of the drive, then turn it off, connect it to the TV, the installation will occur automatically. If not, open it using the file explorer.

I saw several replies mentioning zip files to download from this site,
http://www.danedigital.com/4-Disques-Durs-externes/5-so-speaky.html
...but on this site, I can’t find anything, just ads for Dan Elec and downloads for manuals.
But where is that firmware 4.1 then?
Could you zip it and send it to me by email?
I am using Windows XP.
Have you resolved your issue with the "So Speaky"?
I'm also desperately looking for this firmware 1.4
Thanks in advance,
nfranq
with Partition Magic it works
have a nice evening
