Very, very long decompression time...

Hello,

Here is my problem: when I want to decompress a file with WinRAR, it's a nightmare! I open my RAR (between 500 MB and 2 GB), I drag all the files to extract them into a folder, a WinRAR window opens and the extraction begins. Up until then, everything is fine, it lasts a few seconds.
Once the operation is finished, another file transfer window opens and here is my problem, this operation lasts for dozens of minutes or even more than an hour... I don't understand. This file transfer window from one folder to another is like: transferring rar$dr... to my destination folder.

Is this transfer normal? Once the extraction is completed, shouldn't the operation normally be finished? Why does this transfer take forever?

This happens with all my RARs, it's a horror. Can someone please help me?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 2.0.0.11

Good evening Ricard.
Try 7 Zip, it’s free http://www.7-zip.org/ and in French.
Talk to you later.

Well, I finished decompressing with 7-Zip. A 2.6 GB RAR in 25 minutes.
Are those decent performance metrics?
Can it be done better?

Anyway, thanks a lot lacharpente because with 7-Zip I was able to keep using my PC (browsing the internet, using software...) during the decompression, which I couldn't do with WinRAR (the PC was seriously lagging, impossible to touch it during the operation)

Thanks

Good evening

WinRAR works with RAM memory. For large files, once it is loaded into memory, WinRAR will transfer it to a folder, so it will take some time to process this operation.
This also depends on the power of the processor, the RAM, and especially the size of the file.
For a small file, we do not see this small window appear because it happens instantly.

I came to this conclusion by doing various tests with the same file (just WinRAR open, then with various other applications).

But that’s just my opinion.

Hello Ricard.
I don't know if it can be improved because I don't use it often enough; most of the time I don't do anything else at the same time, so try it with a file of the same importance without doing anything else on your computer. Since I saved you some time, I'll be there for the aperitif.
Have a good day, see you later.

Try defragmenting your hard drives and don't launch anything else during your decompression.

This should significantly improve speed.
