Crackling and popping sound issues

Hello everyone,

I've had a problem for a while now, but it has become truly "unbearable".

I know the problem isn't easy to solve, so I'm going to provide as much info as possible.

So, my problem is:
My speakers are crackling and popping.

The occurrence of the problem:
Before, I could have perfect sound for long hours and then, for no apparent reason, it would start crackling.
It systematically crackles when I plug my external hard drive into the firewire port of my sound card and transfer files.
It crackles in certain games (C&C 3 which is quite resource-intensive, but also in very lightweight applications like a geography freeware that only weighs a few KB and has no soundtrack) consistently. Quitting the game usually stops the crackling.
Recently, it crackles right away or after a few seconds no matter what I'm doing.

Leads:
When I go into my sound card settings (Creative Audigy 2), in the Creative speaker settings, if I change the sound system, it gives me a reprieve that can be fairly long. For example, it starts crackling, I switch to 4.1 and then, no more problems... half an hour later, it crackles again, I switch to 2.1 and voilà, like magic...
I recently bought a good graphics card ("recently" as in early August, I think) and I wonder: is it possible that a powerful graphics card running at full blast in an old case like mine (Dell Dimension 8300) could be overheating the sound card placed right next to it?
I saw on another forum that someone had a similar problem since he bought an LCD screen... I have one too, is it a possible source of trouble? The post didn't have a response...
In the device manager, I see my video card but no trace of my sound card... Is that normal?

What I think might be red herrings:
I believe the external hard drive is not the issue because when it is unplugged from my PC, it still starts crackling.
Since my speakers were getting old, I thought the problem might be there. I plugged perfectly functioning speakers into another PC, and they also crackle on my PC. Therefore, the problem likely does not come from the speakers.
I have no magnets near my speakers, and my USB wifi card is quite far from my speakers (more than a meter, I have a USB extension)

As for drivers, I've tried to update the drivers for my card, but since it's old, I can't find the right drivers (even with tools like Everest or ma-config.com)

Bonus question:

If you're convinced my sound card is broken, which seems most likely, would buying a new one solve the problem? I mean, wouldn’t it end up burning out like the other one because of the case or the graphics card right next to it?

Even if you don't have a solution, thank you for reading this to the end...

Happy holidays

Hello!

I know this topic is old, but for those who might read it, you never know.

A buzzing problem is often due to sound card settings:
  • reinstall the sound card driver
  • check what frequencies your sound card supports (for example, mine = maximum 22Hz), in which case, lower it!

And finally, if you have a laptop, the graphics card is coupled with the sound card because they are grafted onto the motherboard, so update your graphics card, and if necessary, lower the quality settings of your card.

There you go! I hope my post helps...
