Hello everyone,
I am currently a 9th-grade student (in Houilles in the 78 Yvelines) and I am looking for a high school.
To be more specific, I am pursuing studies in graphic design in video games (graphics, sound, etc.) and I have just started to look into this field in depth.
After some reflection, I thought about starting this long journey at the Lycée des Pierres Vives in Carrières-sur-Seine (also in the 78).
I was considering taking the new ISI option (Introduction to Engineering Sciences) for the 10th grade in the STI electronics engineering branch (Industrial Sciences and Technologies). I would then continue to the 11th and 12th grade (which do not include this ISI option) and take my STI BAC.
Does this pathway seem correct to you for training as a Graphic Designer in Video Games?
And where should I go after high school?
Thank you in advance, Best regards,
Hasu
PS: I had considered ENJMIN after high school (National School of Games and Interactive Digital Media), which is located in Angoulême... is this a possible choice for the continuation of my Graphic Design studies?

For STI "applied arts," as the name indicates, it is essentially oriented towards the careers in applied arts, which are grouped into four main categories:
- Object design (volume, model, automobile design, object marketing...),
- Visual communication (illustration, advertising, video, photography, animation...),
- Styling (haute couture, ready-to-wear, textile creation...),
- Environmental design (interior architecture, space planning, urban furniture...).
So, as you can understand, this field is quite graphic. The digital aspect is just one tool among many others and is primarily focused on desktop publishing (Xpress, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign...). In the BTS program, there is a choice of specialization, leading to the discovery of software more specific to certain professions (2D or 3D). The goal of the STI bac is to train future creatives with technical skills, not computer scientists.
As for the other Bac, I won't be able to provide information! ;-D -
Hello,
Game Graphic Designer Training: if it's solely for the programming part, then perhaps, but if graphic design interests you as well, it would be wiser to choose the "applied arts" option in your STI baccalaureate (formerly F12) to acquire graphic fundamentals. Then you can decide on a specialization through ENJMIN or another institution. -
Here is the translation: Simple abbreviation mistake ^^ I was actually talking about visual communication with a multimedia option. In fact, I wanted to follow the path indicated by a graphic designer on https://www.oriane.info:
Here it is:
"At bac + 2, the BTS in visual communication with a multimedia option and the DMA in animated cinema can constitute a first step to access the profession of graphic designer. Selection is made based on files with the bac STI in applied arts, a vocational arts diploma (BMA), or a technician diploma (BT).
With a bac from another series, it is necessary to follow a year of selective leveling.
After this BTS or DMA, continuing studies in higher schools of applied arts (ESAA) lead to the DSAA in arts and techniques of communication (bac + 4).
National schools of art (Beaux-Arts or ENSBA, ENSAD...) issue their own diplomas at bac + 5 level. The reference in the field of applied arts is ENSAD (Arts deco) which trains in new technologies and animation.
Fine arts schools (around fifty in France) offer a short cycle (bac + 3) leading to DNAT and a long cycle (bac + 5) culminating in DNSEP option art or communication.
At university, there is the professional license (bac + 3) in imaging techniques specializing in graphic design (Catholic University of the West in Angers and University of Le Mans). Furthermore, at the master's level (bac + 5), we can mention the professional master's in computer-generated imagery applied to communication (Strasbourg III), the professional master's in numerical image processing 3 (Pau), and the professional master's in video games and interactive media (Poitiers).
Many private schools, with varying reputations among professionals, also offer training of varying lengths. Some have an excellent reputation: the Gobelins School of Image CCIP, Supinfocom CCI Valenciennes, Emile-Cohl School (Lyon), or EMCI (School of Graphic Creation Professions) in Angoulême which offers a one-year training, after a bac + 2, for careers in 3D graphic design."
There you go!
I wanted to do a BAC STI in Applied Arts + BTS in Visual Communication with a multimedia option and finally one of the art schools like ENSAD.
Thank you
Hasu
PS: Happy End of Year Holidays to Everyone and Merry Christmas! :)-
Merry Christmas to you too!
However, do you have very good grades in visual arts right now, and do you draw a lot? The STI BAC is primarily a very graphic BAC. You will have courses in art history, observational drawing, technical and descriptive drawing, colors, applied arts with projects to be made in the themes of textiles, visual communication, design, and space planning... Moreover, the selection is already significant because there are very few sections throughout France. For Gobelins, for example, the first two or three years of animation learning is done only through so-called traditional techniques. Only in the last year do you choose a graphics option (2D and 3D). The entrance exam used to be very graphic, with tasks like drawing a character (presented in side view) from several different angles! SUPINFOCOM and CCI of Valenciennes have the reputation of being of good quality, and you often find student works showcased in various infographic festivals.
I admit it’s not easy to make a choice of orientation, especially to be accepted into the schools you want... This year, your reports need to be as good as possible to give you the best chances! And for a choice in STI, draw, draw, draw, and draw again... computer science is just one tool among many in this field!
Good luck, Hasu.

In fact, I was thinking after my STI BAC to do a BTS (for clarification); but regarding the BAC itself, as you know, I would like to work in graphic design, programming... in video games: do you think it is more sensible to choose the "applied arts" option or "electronic engineering"?
For more information, could you tell me the differences between these two options?
Thank you
Hasu -
For the graphic dimension: yes. However, for the programming dimension... it would probably be best to inquire with ENJMIN to find out what profile of students they select for their training program.

Be careful with your averages, here are the admission coefficients in applied arts:
- Coeff. 5 in Visual Arts
- Coeff. 4 in Technology (yes, a subject that we tend to neglect but which can make all the difference...)
- Coeff. 3 in Math
- Coeff. 2 in French (which is very important in applied arts)
- Coeff. 1 in History and First Foreign Language
+ behavior points
It's worth noting that if you place it as your first choice, you get an extra 50 points
This is to give you a little idea of the subjects not to be neglected and above all, talk to your teachers about it! -
Hi Hasu.
My brother wants to do the same job as you and he is currently in his final year of high school (L stream)!!!!!!!!!!!! But he needs to take a math option.
He is at Coot High School.
He went to the student fair where he found the Épitech school.
You have to work a lot; there are almost no lessons, hardly any theory, and the school is always open (you can go on the computers at 5 a.m. if you feel like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and they pay for an Aqua Boulevard (giant swimming pool) for you to relax, and there is a gym..... You can study for up to 5 years.
This school is really awesome but costs 4000 or 5000 euros per year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bye
Marianne. -
In terms of drawing, I have to admit that my average is 13. Honestly (and I swear I'm not joking), my art teacher is really old and has Aisaimer's disease (I'm not sure how to spell it ^^), so if I show him a beautiful drawing, 10 minutes later he'll tell me it's awful :S.
Self-assessment, I don't know how to draw, I admit it; I didn't think it was absolutely necessary to draw to work in this kind of field. A graphic designer draws and a digital graphic artist uses these drawings to animate them! That's what I thought at first :( !-
If you want to discover the kingdom, you can ask for the conditions here (it's in Belgium, but hey, we're doing Europe) ;-)

Hello everyone, I am currently in the 10th grade, my class council has passed and the teachers advised me regarding my grades to go for a STG. However, later I would like to have the job of an graphic designer, so I would like to know if with STG I can pursue this career.
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond, it is very important to me!! :D-
Hello,
of course you can be a Graphic Designer, it's pretty simple. You just need to complete a Foundation Course in Applied Arts (MANAA) after a year of STG high school, followed by a BTS in Visual Communication or a similar field.
This foundation course helps you learn the essential basics; then the BTS, through its internships, allows you to work in a company.
But if you can go into STI (Applied Arts), I recommend that choice in the first year because it's the shortest path. The downside is that you need to know what you like about this career, as the options are quite different.
I am currently in STG Terminal and I also want to be a Graphic Designer. If I could have gone to STI, I would have definitely done it, but oh well.
P.S.: Personally, I recommend the Information Systems Management (G.S.I.) option in terminal (it's better than accounting) as it can teach you things in programming if you're interested. Finally, if you choose to go into STG. -

I would like to know if there are any high schools around Paris or in the 94 area that specialize in drawing studies (comic strips, illustration, manga). This is for my daughter. She is very strong in drawing and has already created two manga stories, and her dream is to enter a specialized high school in this field. I await responses and information as soon as possible; time is pressing, and I don't know what else to do to reassure her. Thank you all.

Hello
I am the mother of a daughter who is in 8th grade
she would like to pursue studies in applied arts
I am currently gathering information everywhere
we just attended the open house of a school
they offer a CAP followed by a bac pro
what do you think about this?
is it an interesting path or would it be better for her to pursue a STI bac
sincerely-
If your daughter's general education grades are good and she has the ability to pursue higher education, it is preferable to go for STI. The CAP or BEP pathway is only interesting if the student's capabilities do not allow them to enter high school. Now, the difficulty is to be able to join an STI section because generally there is only one section per academy. So in the third year, she needs to have the best report cards possible.

Hello, while researching on the ENJMIN website, I couldn't find "my happiness" :S.
I'm leaving you the direct link to the "training" section of the ENJMIN website.
http://www.enjmin.fr/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7&Itemid=7
Regarding this, could you tell me if the orientation HIGH SCHOOL STI APPLIED ARTS + BTS would be possible to enter the National School of Game and Digital Interactive Media? (or if I need to pursue something more like additional years of study or a further diploma).
Thank you ^^
Hasu -
When I see this [http://www.enjmin.fr/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5&Itemid=7 page], I think you need to first determine which area attracts you the most in video games: creation or programming. If you enjoy the creative aspect, then Applied Arts STI is the most suitable. If it’s programming that interests you, then the other diploma will likely be more educational for that! The advantage and disadvantage of this higher education school is that admission can come from various pathways. Only the motivation, originality, and professionalism of the future candidates will make the difference. To be more certain, you can give them a call in early January. There are also audiovisual pathways that are more technical in audio and video! In fact, I believe there are many BTS or IUT programs that can help you get there. I would tend not to advise you to go to university because I think it’s too theoretical for this type of field, but again, exceptions might contradict me!

Hello Hasu,
If you want to focus solely on programming, the choice of advisor is probably good. However, the term graphic designer includes both information and graphics. So make sure to research the definitions of the specializations in these fields. Don’t hesitate to meet with several different advisors to get diverse perspectives. Also, feel free to reach out to companies in this industry.
Rest assured, through your research, your project is becoming clearer and growing... so it’s definitely not a waste of time! Good luck. -
Hello,
In terms of programming, I mainly focus on the graphical part but only in graphic animation and not in drawing per se! I will try to contact Microsoft or Ubisoft France to get possible ideas and feedback from professionals (if you know how to contact them by phone or email, I am interested as I couldn't find it online). I will conduct more in-depth research on this topic (the difference between graphic professions without drawing).
Thank you for your help, Hasu! -
Hello!
I am currently in a vocational high school program for Applied Arts in my senior year.
If you choose to do a vocational high school program for Applied Arts, you need to be motivated above all, as the workload is very intensive,
and knowing how to draw is not essential; I'm not a "whiz" at drawing, yet I'm among the best in my class. However, one thing is important: you need to be good in general subjects such as math, French, and English.
Look into CFA, BT, or vocational diplomas in Applied Arts; there are more specialized programs than a STI AA (Applied Arts) high school diploma if you want to pursue graphic design or get into graphic arts. -
Hello,
Thank you for this information Alucia! Unfortunately, I'm not really strong in English and Math :S I'm barely at the level in English! That's why I'm going to work harder in these two subjects to pass a scientific Baccalaureate and then I'll choose a DUT in computer science with a focus on graphics (by then, I have time to go see a career advisor to select the right DUT in Computer Science and Graphics (without drawing, I specify ^^) !
Thank you very much!
Hasu-
Hello,
the profession of graphic designer consists of different specializations (animation, character design, 2D or 3D environments...).
These specialties mainly depend on the size of the team; the larger the team, the more numerous the specialties. If it is a small team, which is increasingly rare nowadays, especially among video game production studios (Square Enix, Rare, Ubisoft...), then the people involved will have no choice but to perform multiple roles in the video game industry simultaneously (a graphic designer will also be a graphic artist as well as the project manager or others...). If this is not very clear, I apologize in advance, please ask me for more explanations if needed.
Currently, I am trying to find out what to do after my STG BAC to become a graphic designer specializing in video games, particularly in 3D environments. After extensive research, I found that I should do a foundation course in applied arts (MANAA) followed by a BTS in visual communication (there are 2 options), then either ENJMIN, but I doubt that for now because the work needed to be admitted is considerable (at my current level), or it will be a Higher National Diploma in Applied Arts (DSAA); also perhaps a Master’s (Gamagora...) because now the recommended level is between Bac+2 and Bac+4 (for the job market).
Otherwise, for programming, I advise you to start learning different languages (VBA, CSS, HTML, C++...); there are many tutorials online and also graphic engines (OpenGL or DirectX) with software like 3Dstudiomax (not free but there is Blender...however, they are more oriented towards graphics but there are sections that concern animation, modeling...
DO NOT trust the CIOs, I am categorical about this, be sure to look for information from other sources than them because they are generally nice but their information is either outdated or completely false and their opinions, in general, based on your academic results, are even more deplorable.
