I found the free cross-stitch software Kreutz on the following site http://ww10.multibrod.com; it would be helpful for me to know what can be done with it since I am a beginner. There is also a free embroidery software available on the Thredworks site, but in English. (http://www.thredworks.com/dwnlod.htm)
I ended up putting on my blog https://lyogau.over-blog.com/ the transformation of a photo into a grid using GIMP and instructions for downloading GIMP, which is a super effective free software. After that, you need to transform the grid for the purpose you want to use it for. I think it works. If not, please let me know your problems. Look for the page "From Photo to Embroidery" part 2 http://lyogau.over-blog.com/pages/De_la_photo_vers_la_broderie-471004.html
If you are interested in this page, it has moved to a new address at

To my knowledge, there is no free software that does everything.
First, you need to process the photo to create a grid: this can be done with GIMP, a free photo editing software that needs no introduction (see the page of my blog mentioned earlier at http://lyogau.over-blog.com). Then use the obtained grid to place the crosses. In any case, it's often necessary to make adjustments to the patterns created automatically to achieve a very good result.
For machine embroidery, you need to enter the crosses in Kreuzstich.
Happy stitching.

Hi,
I found a website where you upload your photo along with a short description of what you want to create, and they send you a ready-to-embroider grid with color references in PDF format.
You can go to toutbroder.free.fr

Hello,
This is not a cross-stitch software, but a "thing"... Download the software "PhotoFiltre", go to "Filter", choose "aesthetic" then "mosaic"... In the end, the image is broken down into colorful squares... You just have to choose the size of the grid... For B&W, go through "adjustment" then "duotone" and back to "filter" afterward... there you go!

Hello to you, first of all thank you for all your advice. I managed to download the PhotoFiltre software and I am happy. I used aesthetic as mentioned, then mosaic. Sometimes the image comes out very nice and easy to follow, but if there are too many details, everything becomes very difficult to see. I also have the cross-stitch option, but when I use it, crosses appear in the small squares. And I think they are not DMC symbols.
Hello everyone, I also downloaded Photofiltre, and I have used the cross stitch feature, but I don't know how to adjust this application. Indeed, a grid appears on my image, does that mean that a small square represents a cross? If anyone has an answer for me, or even additional information about this cross stitch option, I thank you in advance =)
Hello and congratulations on your wedding. I'm getting married on 08/22/2009. There are software available in stores like Fnac and Leclerc Culture, but I'm not sure about free options online. In craft stores, you can also send your photo to have it printed on canvas at reasonable prices. Happy searching!
Thank you mumdo for your response!
Actually, I sent an email to the manufacturer who replied to me. You need to launch the software by right-clicking on its icon on the desktop and selecting "run as administrator." Once the software is launched, "create a new project" in order to get the starting grid, and then exit the program. After that, when launching the software normally, there is indeed no more error message! Everything works perfectly!

Hello,
I found a cross-stitch software that converts images and photos into cross-stitch patterns and provides a list of colors to buy, it's amazing.
It's the software: Super Point de Croix 3, by Micro Application.
I've had it for 3 years.

You need to explain: you are looking for a software to transform a photo into cross-stitch. That's fine, but then do you embroider it by hand or with a sewing machine? If you are looking for software, it might be expensive. Maybe on cross-stitch forums, not machine embroidery, you can find someone who can do it for you? If you want to have it done in machine embroidery in cross-stitch, that is possible; contact some sites by searching for "digitizing embroidery creator." Try to see, you will surely find something. Otherwise, type angoraproduction and ask Mue; she knows a lot of people and maybe she creates designs based on photos. Thank you.
I would like to receive a cross-stitch grid of the map of Martinique with a hibiscus flower, thank you.
I just acquired a luxury cross stitch software, but I’m either clueless about how to use it or there’s a problem with the software. Can someone please explain how to turn a photo into a cross stitch grid with my personal dimensions? I’ve been trying for several days and can’t figure it out; this software seems very complicated and not very beginner-friendly, or maybe I’m just really dumb (laughs).
I’m waiting for quick responses because I’d really like to make my little snipe in size 12 by 14, and on top of that, it requires a lot of colors. How do I do it? SOS.

Hello,
It's a rather complicated job!
First, it's preferable to crop the part of the photo you want to embroider using a photo editing software (PhotoFiltre, Paint.NET, GIMP, are free) and save the result in the image folder in bitmap or jpeg format.
1) In Super Point de Croix, click on conversion,
convert an image,
2) find the desired photo in the folder where it is saved, selecting "all files" next to file type:
3) you can crop the photo to precisely delineate what will be embroidered
4) and above all, you can modify the colors, which is preferable. By adding +50 for red and -50 for blue, you get a sepia tone (old photo) that looks great. You can also adjust brightness, contrast, etc.
5) OK
6) This is where you will indicate the size of your finished embroidery
You then need to check if the fabric matches yours (55.12/10 cm corresponds to aida 5.5)
It's up to you to indicate the desired dimension, you will then have the number of crosses to embroider.
7) Next, you need to specify the number of colors by clicking on limit the number of colors to:
Do not exceed 20, it’s up to you to experiment...
8) you can delete or replace a color by right-clicking on it.

Good evening everyone!
I bought Point de Croix Deluxe to be able to embroider from photos. And I'm experiencing a problem: when converting my images, an error message appears: "import or scanning procedure disabled." However, I haven't changed anything, and I can't find anything to activate this procedure... In short, I'm starting to lose my patience!!
Thank you for helping me if you can!

Good evening,
The photo you want to convert must already be located in the images folder on your computer (in jpeg or bitmap format). Be sure to select the "convert an image" option.
Have you tried uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it by choosing the custom installation to check all the boxes?
Good luck3
