I have a problem with my DVD drive, its reference is MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA Device. My laptop no longer recognizes it. I have an Acer Aspire 5100 and I am using Vista. I am looking for a driver for this device in order to reinstall it.

I had a problem with the MATSHITA DVD-Ram UJ-850 DVD drive on my ACER 5710 laptop running Windows Vista, which recognized CD-ROMs but not DVDs. I tried everything, like uninstalling the driver in Windows Vista (of course, it automatically reinstalls itself), cleaning the lens, removing entries in "Regedit" in Windows... but with no results. Finally, I found the solution on a website in English:

I just had to manually slide the lens support on the rails to both ends (very gently, of course) two or three times, and then it worked right away :)

Hi, I have exactly the same problem, I also have an ACER Aspire 5100 running VISTA.
My drive is neither in my computer nor in the device manager. I’ve tried a lot of things, but nothing works either. I even reformatted my PC, still nothing.

@hackminator2 no, actually we can't find the link for the Matshitaa DVD-RAM UJ-850S firmware on the Vaio website... so since you say you've found it, it would be nice to share it.

Because it's a bit too easy to say 'I found it!' and 'just do a Google search!' :-)

Better late than never. For those having issues with the infamous UJ-850S, for your happiness, I have found version 1.61 of its firmware.

I’m a fan of computers but right now there's no solution, my PC no longer recognizes my DVD drive, it's not showing in the workstation but it's there in the devices with a yellow question mark. It tells me the drivers are fine but it starts up without reading and then stops. GIVE ME A SOLUTION FOR A YOUNG LADY WITHOUT WEAPONS.

IT WORKS AFTER CLEANING THE LENS.
I had the same problem as you, my player often wouldn't recognize my blank DVDs. I just lightly cleaned the lens with a tissue, and it works perfectly. There's no need to change the driver or the firmware of the player.

So... first of all, this firmware is available on the Japanese Vaio site (do a Google search).

Next, the problem seems to be with the lens.

Finally, I re-cleaned the lens of my drive and it worked. I was sure that was not it because I had done it twice before, but I thought, I'll try one more time, and it worked. I carefully cleaned it with the inside of a Kleenex tissue... WITHOUT ANY PRODUCT!!!!
