No video output in VLC

Hello,

I was using VLC on my Fedora and it always worked very well, and I was satisfied. I completely reinstalled my PC and since then, it's not working well at all.

It plays music and video DVDs very well, but for all other videos, there are only problems. For divx, wmv, etc., there is only sound, no image. The .fla files that it used to play well are no longer playing at all: neither sound nor image.

I don't understand why... I tried several video files, which all work on Totem-xine but not on VLC.

VLC was installed via yum.

If anyone has any idea about this... After extensive research, I found only one person who seemed to have the same problem and apparently did not find a solution.

Thank you in advance.

Hi, I'm late to the party, but I found a solution.
Actually, I don’t know the exact origin of the bug, but it occurred after a graphics card change.

Version of VLC 2.01

Before: Radeon HD 5870 graphics card and I had sound and image when playing avi, mp4 files etc.

After installing a Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 driver Catalyst 12.3, bang, I had sound but no image.
I went (a bit randomly):

Open VLC then:

1. TOOLS menu then PREFERENCES from the context menu
2. selecting the "Video Settings" dialog box by clicking on the "VIDEO" icon on the left.
3. On the right of the OUTPUT label it says "Default".
Normally, VLC automatically looks for the best video output module, but for me, following the above changes, the program found nothing.... By clicking on the line containing "Default", you get the choice between several modules (for some, it's like Chinese..)
I selected what seemed most logical to me: video output "DirectX (Directdraw)" and then clicked the SAVE button at the bottom right of the dialog box. (if this doesn't work, you can try one or more other options..)
In any case, with this change, my VLC IS BACK ON TRACK!!! Image and sound!!

Conclusion: I don’t think the graphics card is to blame, but maybe there is still an incompatibility between VLC and the Catalyst driver 12.3 that prevents VLC from automatically finding the appropriate video output... as it did before without any problem.

It just took hitting the right manipulation, but I repeat, I didn't go really randomly, but still with a bit of common sense...

I hope this can help

Thank you, following some updates (I guess) it wasn't working anymore, after reinstalling VLC still no images. I followed your advice and it works.
