ping = general failure ??? Solved

Question

Hello,
I have a computer A, running Windows XP Pro, connected to a Livebox via wifi, and everything works very well.
I also have a computer B, running Windows Vista Pro, connected to the same Livebox via Ethernet cable, and, for the past few days, this computer cannot connect to the Internet. It says it's in a local network with limited connectivity. The ping command indicates: "general failure".
However: the computer works fine (network card...), the Livebox works properly: it seems to be a connectivity issue between the computer and the Livebox.
I tried using wifi and got the same result!
For your information, I have tried all the solutions indicated on the Orange website, Livebox, troubleshooting, etc.
I checked the Ethernet cable: it's fine.
I uninstalled the antivirus (AntiVir) and disabled the firewall (Windows) when necessary.
I also consulted the bichofeo site, often mentioned, and of course, this site extensively.
In short, I have no more solutions.
Is there anyone among you who could help me?

I have already encountered this issue on a PC and it was simply due to a software that filtered IPs.
Like Peerguardian!
The solution: Open the IP blocking software and either temporarily disable it or scrutinize the blocked IP in the log window (Peerguardian displays it by default).

Hello,
We can't say that the command "ping = general failure" is very inspiring!
In the hopes of getting a response anyway, here’s where I stand now - it's November 6, 2007.
I have reconnected computer B to WiFi, and when I access the Livebox (198.162.1.1 - WiFi) (from computer A, which is working perfectly), I can see both of my computers recognized as connected.
It seems that there is no problem on the Livebox side.
Computer B keeps sending me messages like: "this computer has limited connectivity" - "local area connection only; you cannot access the Internet"... all while indicating "Livebox wireless network connection signal strength excellent"!
I restored the IP using the netsh command, but it didn't help.
Whether the IP is set to automatic or manual makes no difference either. On automatic, it gives me an address starting with 169, and on manual there is no connection possible.
The ping command in a loop (or any other ping command on machine A or B) invariably results in either "general failure" or "error 1231."
I found nothing in the Vista help, nothing in Microsoft help, nothing in the Livebox help, and no solution here!
Does anyone have any insight to shed new light on this problem and find a solution?

I have exactly the same problem as you with an Acer 5710ZG laptop running Vista.

My 3 tower PCs have fixed IPs via RJ45, my work laptop connects fine either via RJ45 with a fixed IP or via Wi-Fi with auto IP.
I have another laptop that connects perfectly via Wi-Fi with auto IP (all these PCs are running XP).

You could say I have a fairly eclectic setup.

I’ve also tried a lot of things to configure my Neufbox but nothing works. The Acer always connects with "limited connectivity". Apparently, there’s a DNS problem, and when I try to ping, I either get "general failure" when I set the IP, or "transmission failure: error code 1231" when I'm on auto IP.

I’m discouraged; all the other PCs have no issues.

Good evening, with an IP address 169.254..... it's impossible to access the internet (it's an APIPA address), normally for it to work again you need to set a Static IP on your PC (within the same address range as the default gateway) and also set the DNS manually (those of your ISP), after doing these maneuvers you reboot and it should work, if not you need to call your ISP

To Bewonder, I will keep you updated as soon as I solve the problem; you’re getting exactly the same messages, it's the same hassle. And I'm starting to get fed up with struggling!

To jmber: I've already done everything you mentioned except... call Orange (my ISP)! I feel like I'm going to have to do that! But when I access the Livebox by typing http 192.168.1.1, it indicates that I have two machines connected via Wi-Fi. So my two computers are indeed connected to the Livebox. That's why I think it's an internal machine problem, like a missing DLL (type loopback since the ping loop gives me a general failure)?

To arth: the computer's configuration hasn't changed (except the PS to read below?), I've tried rebooting the box several times, both PCs are in the same mode, that is to say, on a fixed IP, and the Livebox is still operational, so the PC is started after the box. The ip/config/release and renew didn't work!

In short, I have one machine that works fine (the one I'm currently working on)
and the other keeps telling me: connected to Livebox 100%, but this computer has limited connectivity: local network only: no internet access
(noting that I have disabled the Windows firewall and uninstalled the antivirus).

I continue to work on this problem - but I can only do it during lunch and in the evening, after work - for now, by browsing the DELL site (brand of both machines), and I will keep you updated.

P.S.: One fact to consider perhaps: purchased in July, I uninstalled in August the antivirus-firewall program that was pre-installed on the machine and was becoming paid, to replace it with antivirus and the Windows firewall; but the troubles only started in October and I don't see any cause-and-effect relationship two months apart?

Hello

Regarding the ping error, if you have error code 1231, it's an issue with the IPv6 protocol of the network card. To resolve this, you need to uncheck the IPv6 protocol in the local network properties and manually set the IP address in the IPv4 protocol. Then, in the command prompt, type "netsh int ip reset reset.txt" and "netsh winsock reset," and after that, restart your computer.

Fix the IP addresses:

Right-click on the network icon marked "unlimited or nonexistent access," then Status and Properties.
Look for "Internet Protocol TCP IP" and double-click on it.
IP Address: choose one in the style of 192.168.1.10 for example
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (IP of the box, correct it if it's not right)

Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1 (same as the gateway)
Secondary DNS leave blank.

If it’s not a more serious problem, once you've done this you'll regain access.
Otherwise, you will need to uninstall all security tools: Firewall, Antivirus, etc... restart the PC

and type under CMD:

netsh int ip reset all
netsh winsock reset

Restart the PC.

And if after all this you still don't have access, then physical intervention is required, so I can't help you further.

My BitDefender 10 firewall (Vista approved!) prevents me from pinging my network (except for localhost...) and displays "general failure." If I disable it, bam, everything's all right.

Sorry for the double post but:

It specifically concerns the ICMP requests (Ping, etc.) that were abusively blocked by the firewall. I have therefore freed these from firewall control and, miraculously, everything works. I will try to refine this setting.

I typed the previous commands, I didn't feel any amazing improvement.

I set a static IP (v4) like 192.168.1.8 with a regular subnet mask (255.255.255.0), gateway and primary DNS the IP of my box (192.168.1.1) and I have internet access again...

Windows and the DHCP of the Livebox, it's legendary! I'm not even trying to understand...

network card incompatible with the latest updates of the Win****s operating systems. There are two possibilities: if after restarting the BOX nothing changes

1- try a system restore
2- uninstall and reinstall the network card drivers if that doesn't work
you change the network card

I see this problem on quite a few forums without any solutions given.
I've been a victim of this issue for a while, but I only realized it since I reinstalled the PyGrenouille program that tests the bandwidth and ping.

I simply uninstalled BitDefender Internet Security (Antivirus/Firewall/etc.) and the problem was resolved. Ping started working again. I reinstalled the latest version directly from the BitDefender website and installed it with the default settings, and the problem returned.

So, I think the issue comes from firewalls or antivirus software, or security solutions in general. This didn't happen to me a while ago with the same security system, so I think some rules must have been added or some components might be causing this problem.

Another hypothesis that might be valid, unless some people experienced this well before, but I'm only noticing this issue now that Internet Explorer 8 has been installed in its final version, and I know that Internet Explorer 8 interacts quite strongly, at least with BitDefender... Is it possible that this is related to some sort of incompatibility?

So that's what I can say...
Beyond that, it doesn't hinder browsing or anything else; it just prevents me from pinging the web. For my part, local ping works, whether it's 127.0.0.1 or pinging my box... But beyond the box, it doesn't work anymore... But without BitDefender, I repeat, it works again so the box doesn't seem to be the issue. Furthermore, I've read on English-speaking sites that the "general failure" error is caused within Vista or the OS at least, and not by an external element.

ERROR 1231

When trying to connect or ping (start => run => cmd => ping 192.168.1.1 (ping address of the Livebox)): the WINDOWS error 1231 appears.

In short, this error means: The network location cannot be reached. For information on troubleshooting the network, refer to Windows Help.

For XP:

This error is due to an internal problem within the PC. The network card is not responding.

To do this, click on "Start" then select "Settings" then "Control Panel".

In the window that opens, click on "System" then select the hardware tab.

Then click on "Device Manager".

Click on the small "+" corresponding to your problem.

If you notice a red cross appears, either the card is disabled, or the driver for this card has a problem, and in this case, it needs to be reinstalled.

For Vista:

Click on "Start" then "Control Panel".

In the Control Panel, select "System and Maintenance" and then click on "Device Manager" or directly click on the "Device Manager" icon.

Otherwise, you can update the driver, uninstall it, using these buttons. You need to have the driver backed up to reinstall it.

You may have problems with the machine's BIOS, in which case it is better to contact the manufacturer's customer support.

5) Wait for the repairs to complete and then restart the machine

In my case, with a situation similar to yours (no network connection, error 1231 when pinging + IP), this resolved my issue on Vista!
