Why is my mobile blocking the camera?

Hello,
I have a Redmi 9A mobile;
Until now, I would take photos that would save to my device, then I would go to the gallery to view them and transfer the ones I wanted to my computer.
A week ago, when I wanted to take a photo, a message appeared on the screen:
"your USB storage device is full"
and I couldn't take any photos.
I deleted about a hundred photos that I had saved in my gallery to 'make space' but it hasn't changed anything. As soon as I click on the camera function, the message appears and blocks the function.
I never chose to store my images on 'a USB storage device' (which means an external device, right?)
When I open the camera function, I go to settings, and I don't see any option like 'save your photos to a USB device' that I might have accidentally activated. There's only the option 'save to SD card', but I haven't activated that.
How can I get my camera to work again and save the images in the gallery like it used to do?

Yes, I understand. The question is what should I do to remove this 'external USB device' issue so that it goes back to how it was before? Which setting should I go to in order to click again on 'save to phone' (or something like that)?

This has never been the case; the gallery is a pre-installed application for viewing and cataloging (creating albums). Nothing can be saved there. It is used to open images or videos stored in one of the DCIM image subfolders.
The message likely means that the internal memory is full.
Therefore, when you delete images while in the "gallery" application, they no longer appear but are still present in the internal memory (DCIM).
So you need to check this folder to ensure that the images you deleted, after having made a copy on the PC, for example, are no longer there. If so, delete them (be careful, there is no recycle bin on Android to my knowledge).
This is done using another application, usually on Redmi, unless the manufacturer has renamed it, called "my files," or alternatively a different one downloaded like "CX File Explorer."
Either of these file managers will also allow you to check the free space in internal memory or on an SD card used for additional storage.
You will then be able to decide the default volume used for photos taken or images downloaded, for example by switching to the SD card.

Lack of caution on my part indeed. I probably confused it with "move" in another folder. And there is, as you pointed out, a recycle bin for the gallery.
So it's a double error on my part.
Perhaps it should be considered that if we put images in the gallery's recycle bin, they still take up equivalent space in memory since we can restore them.

I received some photos in a WhatsApp message, I downloaded them and they are in the gallery and I can open them.
In my opinion, there is a problem with the photo application.
I used the cleaner to free up space as the mobile asks from time to time.
When I go to the mobile settings, I don't see any 'maintenance' option or any memory management.
There is application management for installing/uninstalling, updating, battery management, etc... but nothing on memory and storage space.The same goes for the camera application management, there is image quality, adding timestamp and others, but nothing on memory size.
Really, the only time I've seen information on storage space is when, let's say once a month, the cleaner gives me a warning 'you are at capacity in memory used, free up storage space using the cleaner'.
But like this, I'm surprised but I don't know where to find the info.

If you have 108 MB free, your smartphone can no longer function normally. That's about 20 photos.
So try as much as possible to delete photos, videos, or documents that take up too much space. The ideal would be to get back to 1 GB free.
Use your smartphone's file manager to see what takes up too much space.
If necessary, you can use an app like X-plore which allows you to visualize storage space usage (if you have enough space to download it).

The memory check section is located in settings, device maintenance, memory, which allows you to display the RAM and internal storage but does not allow you to "manage" them other than by uninstalling certain applications and temporarily freeing up certain memory areas that are occupied.
This does not allow for adjustment, namely increasing the available memory, which, as Pierr10 indicated, is limited, hence the blocks.
I do not think this Redmi model allows you to recover enough memory through a marginal action cleaner, but as indicated, by adding an SD card and enabling backup on it.
The "default settings" of the camera that you mention only concern the settings of its functions and not the 108 MB of free space, which is insufficient to add even a few photos in the usual format.

He already has a file explorer on Android, but there’s better, the well-known CX Explorer which gives all the details and possibilities.
Sandisk also has an app for transfers to external storage and micro SD.
